The Kind pavilion in the spa park at Mondorf-les-Bains, with a glazed structure, garden and iron sculptures

Mondorf-les-Bains had 8 hotel establishments in 2025, according to STATEC, two fewer than in 2024, and no campsite. It's a town of 5,524 people a stone's throw from the Moselle, with the country's only thermal spring, the Domaine Thermal, and its only casino. For a restful two or three nights it's the obvious choice; for touring the country, it's tucked away in a corner.

  • Mondorf-les-Bains had 8 hotels in 2025, according to STATEC, and no campsites.
  • It has Luxembourg's only thermal spring and only casino.
  • There's no railway; buses run there free within the country.
  • Ideal for a spa weekend; less so as a base for touring.

Mondorf knows what it is and does it well. If you want two days of spa, strolls in the park and a dinner with Moselle wine, this is the place. If you've come for castles and city sights, I wouldn't base myself here, because the capital, the north and the Mullerthal are a long way off without a car.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Worth the splurge

    The country's only thermal spring

Mondorf's Domaine Thermal is, according to the government's portal, Luxembourg's only thermal spring, with a wellness centre. Staying in town means you can go back to the water morning and afternoon.

    The Moselle next door

visitluxembourg places Mondorf a stone's throw from the Luxembourg Moselle, and the town has one of the wine region's tourist information offices.

  3. 03 Getting there

    No railway, but free buses

Mondorf isn't on the CFL network. visitluxembourg calls it easily reached by public transport, which costs nothing within the country; routes are on mobiliteit.lu.

  4. 04 My tip

    Book ahead, supply is shrinking

STATEC counted 10 hotel establishments in 2024 and 8 in 2025. For a spa weekend, I wouldn't leave it until the Friday.

    Mondorf-les-Bains

What I would book

Mondorf-les-Bains is Luxembourg’s spa town, and that explains nearly everything about it. It’s a town of 5,524 people in the south-east corner of the country, a stone’s throw from the Moselle, with the Grand Duchy’s only thermal spring and its only casino. Nobody comes here for monuments. People come to unwind, and the accommodation is geared to that.

How much there is, and how it’s changing

STATEC counted eight hotel establishments in the commune in 2025, two fewer than in 2024, and no campsites. Even so, it leads the canton of Remich for hotels, ahead of Remich itself with four. visitluxembourg boasts of its wide choice of hotels and restaurants, and for a town this size it has a point.

The drop from one year to the next leads me to one concrete tip. For a weekend visit, book early, because there’s less to go round than before, and a spa weekend is exactly the kind of trip people plan at the same time.

Who Mondorf suits

Spa-goers, first and foremost. The Domaine Thermal is, according to the government’s portal, Luxembourg’s only thermal spring, run as a spa and wellness centre. Staying in town means a morning in the water, a walk in the spa park and back to the baths in the afternoon, without touching the car. The detail is in Mondorf Domaine Thermal.

It also works for a couples’ break mixing spa and wine. The Moselle is a stone’s throw away, as visitluxembourg puts it, and Ellange, one of the commune’s three localities, is already vineyard country. Mondorf also has one of the Moselle region’s tourist information offices, alongside Remich, Grevenmacher, Ehnen, Schengen and Wasserbilligerbrück, just over the German border.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Mondorf-les-Bains before prices climb.

When I wouldn’t choose it

On a first trip to Luxembourg, if you want the capital, the northern castles and the Mullerthal rocks, Mondorf leaves you out on a limb. It has no railway, so every outing starts with a bus ride. In that case I’d sleep in the capital and visit Mondorf for the day, or save the last night here as a treat.

Getting there and around

Mondorf isn’t on CFL’s station list. visitluxembourg calls it easily reached by public transport, which is free within the country, and mobiliteit.lu publishes routes and times. By car, the bonus is linking the town with the wine route in a single afternoon.

Flying in from Britain, whether Luxair from London City or Manchester or another airline, you land at Findel, just east of the capital. I haven’t found an official direct line from the airport to Mondorf, so plan the connection in the mobiliteit.lu journey planner before you travel rather than at the bus stop.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Mondorf-les-Bains before prices climb.

Costs beyond the room rate

There’s one difference from the capital worth being clear about. The 3% tourist tax I’ve read about is in Luxembourg City’s charges regulation, and it applies there. Whether Mondorf charges something similar I couldn’t confirm in any official source, so ask when you book. What’s the same nationwide is VAT, at a standard 17%. And the bus here, like all national public transport, adds nothing to the bill.

Mondorf and the rest of the Moselle

If you’re after a wine-and-river break rather than a spa one, compare hotels on the Luxembourg Moselle, in Remich and Grevenmacher. Remich, with its long tree-lined walk beside the Moselle, is the region’s other natural base. And in the same canton lies Schengen, the village of the agreement, with its museum, lakes and the Haff Réimech reserve.

For three days, I’d do one night in Remich for the wine and the river and two in Mondorf for the spa, or the other way round if the water matters more than the glass. The town itself, its history and its park, are covered in Mondorf-les-Bains.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Mondorf-les-Bains and choose by the reviews.

A word on spa hotels

Plenty of searches ask for hotels with their own spa in Mondorf. Which hotels have one isn’t published by any official source I’ve read, so I won’t claim it. What’s certain is that the town’s big spa is the Domaine Thermal, and staying a few minutes’ walk from it covers the main point. To compare options across the country, see spa hotels in Luxembourg.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
