Esch-sur-Sûre with the castle ruins on the hill, houses beside the River Sûre and a stone bridge in front

Around the Upper Sûre lake, the country's biggest at about 380 hectares, visitluxembourg lists hotels, holiday flats and B&Bs in Esch-sur-Sûre and several campsites round the water, and there's a youth hostel at Lultzhausen. In 2025 STATEC counted two hotels in the commune of Esch-sur-Sûre and none in Lac de la Haute-Sûre. It's a summer place, with swimming from 1 May to 30 September.

  • The Upper Sûre is Luxembourg's biggest lake, at about 380 hectares.
  • Esch-sur-Sûre has hotels, holiday flats and B&Bs; campsites ring the lake.
  • Lultzhausen has a youth hostel and a water-sports base.
  • Swimming is allowed from 1 May to 30 September in designated areas.

I'd come between June and September and sleep by the water, at a campsite if you've children in tow or in Esch-sur-Sûre if you'd rather have a village and a castle. Out of the swimming season the lake is still lovely, but for a single night up north I'd pick Vianden or Clervaux.

What I would keep in mind

A village in a river bend

Esch-sur-Sûre is wedged into a tight meander of the Sûre, below the ruins of a castle first mentioned in 927, one of the oldest in the country. The ruins are free to explore.

  2. 02 To save money

Hostel and water-sports base at Lultzhausen

The government's portal lists a youth hostel and a water-sports base at Lultzhausen, where you can hire kayaks and canoes and book lessons. The cheapest lakeside option for families.

  3. 03 My tip

    Only swim where it's marked

The lake supplies drinking water to around 70% of the population, so swimming is only allowed in designated areas, from 1 May to 30 September.

    The Burfelt viewpoint

The Belvédère Burfelt platform, opened in 2016, juts out 70 metres above the lake. It's the shot everyone's after, and first thing in the morning you'll have it alone.

What I would book

The Upper Sûre is Luxembourg’s lake district, and it works quite differently from the rest of the north. You don’t come here for a castle or a museum, but for water, woods and quiet. The lake was created by a 1961 dam beside Esch-sur-Sûre, covers about 380 hectares and is the largest in the country. In summer it fills with families, kayaks and swimmers; the rest of the year, with walkers.

It all sits inside the Upper Sûre Nature Park, the Naturpark Öewersauer, created in 2005 and covering 200 km² across five communes with around 15,500 residents. That tells you the scale. This is a thinly populated corner of the Ardennes where the lake, not a town, is the centre of gravity, and where every kind of accommodation, from campsite to B&B, follows the water.

What we know about accommodation

The official figures make it plain that tents outnumber hotel rooms here. According to STATEC, in 2025 the two lakeside communes had two hotels between them, both in Esch-sur-Sûre, which also had five campsites; Lac de la Haute-Sûre had three campsites and no hotel at all. The whole canton of Wiltz had seven hotels and twelve campsites, down from eleven hotels in 2024; the other five hotels are in Wiltz (two), Kiischpelt, Goesdorf and Winseler.

visitluxembourg adds that Esch-sur-Sûre has hotels, holiday flats and B&Bs, with several campsites in the village and around the lake suited to walkers and families. The government’s portal adds a youth hostel at Lultzhausen, next to the water-sports base. From that, my reading is that it’s all small-scale and that summer books up early.

Esch-sur-Sûre, the castle village

For a night in a village, this is the one. Esch-sur-Sûre is squeezed into a tight bend of the Sûre, below the ruins of a castle first mentioned in 927 and counted among the country’s oldest, free to explore. Its narrow lanes and slate-stone houses give it a look that has barely changed since the Middle Ages, according to visitluxembourg.

By the river stands the old 18th-century drapery, now the nature park centre, with a textile museum costing €3 and free up to 21. The Éislek Pad Esch-sur-Sûre, a 6.5 km trail, starts from the village.

By the lake, for summer

The Upper Sûre lake is open for swimming from 1 May to 30 September in designated areas. The reason for so many rules is that it supplies drinking water to around 70% of the population. At Lultzhausen you can hire kayaks, canoes and paddleboards and book lessons, either at the water-sports base or at the youth hostel.

For a family in July or August, I’d look first at a lakeside campsite or the Lultzhausen hostel. That’s how you get the water on your doorstep, which is the whole point.

The lakeside villages

Two small villages look over the water. Lultzhausen, in the commune of Esch-sur-Sûre, is the water-sports one, with the base and the hostel, and has its own guide in Lultzhausen. Insenborn, in the same commune, is the other village with a view of the lake. Neither has its own STATEC hotel count, so to see what’s there you’ll need the map on a booking site. If swimming is the main draw, also compare the other swimming lakes in Luxembourg, at Echternach, Weiswampach and Remerschen.

The viewpoints

The Burfelt viewing platform, built in 2016, stands 70 metres over the water and is the most sought-after view in the area. At Kaundorf, the Runtschelt viewpoint gives another angle. Near Nothum, the Schumannseck is a 2.8 km memorial trail with 20 stations, about two hours on foot.

Getting there and when to come

Esch-sur-Sûre isn’t on CFL’s station list, so you arrive by bus, free within the country, or by car. Routes and times are on mobiliteit.lu.

As for timing, I’m clear. The Upper Sûre shines from June to September, when swimming is open. In spring and autumn it’s good walking country, but with just one night in the north, I’d spend it at hotels in Clervaux or in Vianden and visit the lake for the day.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Esch-sur-Sûre and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
