Luxembourg in December, a city month with short days
Luxembourg in December averages 2.3°C (36°F) at Findel, with the year's highest rainfall (89.5 mm) and only 41.9 hours of sunshine. The capital makes up for it with Winterlights, open until 3 January 2027. - December averages 2.3°C at Findel, with 89.5 mm of rain and only 41.9 hours of sunshine.

- The 25th and 26th are bank holidays; shops shut by law on the 25th and close at 18:00 on the 24th and 31st.
- Luxembourg's school holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027.
For me December in Luxembourg is a short, well-timed city break of two or three nights. I'd go in the first fortnight, before Luxembourg's school holidays start on the 19th, and do the sightseeing in the morning, because the afternoon goes quickly and that's when the markets look their best.

01 My tip
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve shopping ends at 18:00
On the 24th and 31st shops can open until 18:00 at the latest, and on the 25th they're shut by law. Restaurants, hotels and shops in stations and at the airport aren't covered by those rules.

02 Most beautiful
Echternach lit up
Visit Luxembourg singles out the Christmas market in Echternach, the country's oldest town, and its illuminated abbey. It's where I'd go if I left the capital in December.

03 Getting there
No lift on the morning of 7 December
On Monday 7 December 2026 the Pfaffenthal panoramic lift is out of service from 9:00, its maintenance day for the month.

Public transport is free across the whole country, so getting between the Winterlights markets, the museums and the station on the tram or bus costs nothing.

What I would book
In December Luxembourg shrinks down to its capital. The countryside goes quiet, the days are short and the weather won’t help, but the city has its liveliest weeks of the year. Go with that in mind and it’s a very good month for a short break, and an easy one to reach from Britain.
What’s the weather like in December?
Cold, damp and dark, in that order of importance for a visitor. MeteoLux’s normals give a 2.3°C (36°F) average, but what really defines the month is that none is wetter, at 89.5 mm, and none has less sunshine, 41.9 hours across thirty-one days. Fog turns up on 11.3 days on average, another high for the year, and black ice on 1.4. Snow is possible, though there are no official figures for snow days to back it up.
The extremes show how much it can vary. On 31 December 2022 Findel reached 15.7°C, and on 29 December 1976 it fell to −15.3°C. The full series is in Luxembourg weather.
The capital under the Winterlights
The reason to go in December is Winterlights, which the Ville de Luxembourg runs until 3 January 2027, with Christmas markets across several squares in the centre, concerts and shows. Each market has its own character, and I go through them one by one, with what to eat and drink, in Luxembourg Christmas markets.
On 6 December comes Kleeschen, St Nicholas, who in Luxembourg is the one bringing the children’s presents, with his sidekick the Houseker for anyone who’s misbehaved; the whole tradition is in Kleeschen, Luxembourg’s St Nicholas. At the Niklosmaart on Place de Paris there are days when children can find him in his cottage, “Dem Kleesche säin Haus”, according to Visit Luxembourg. And watch out for Monday 7 December 2026, when the Pfaffenthal lift stops from 9:00 for its monthly service.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxembourg on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
Three winter trips outside the city
Visit Luxembourg makes a point of Advent not being just a city affair, and I agree. Echternach, the country’s oldest town, holds its Christmas market and lights up its abbey. Up north, Clervaux suggests a quiet walk around the castle, where The Family of Man stays open until 1 January 2027. And in the west, the Haut-Martelange slate museum hosts a Christmas market around its buildings. Neither Echternach nor Haut-Martelange had 2026 dates out by the end of September.
Mondorf-les-Bains, on the Moselle side of the country, repeats its market on Place des Villes Jumelées on the weekends of 4 to 6 and 11 to 13 December 2026.
The four dates that change opening hours
It’s worth having the calendar to hand. On 24 and 31 December shops can open until 18:00 at most, and banks close on the afternoon of the 24th. Friday the 25th, Christmas Day, is one of three days a year when the law bans shops from opening, bakeries, patisseries and a few food shops aside. Saturday the 26th, St Stephen’s Day, is also a bank holiday, so shops that open keep to holiday hours, 19:00 at the latest. Restaurants, bars, hotels and shops in stations and at the airport sit outside those rules, and the capital’s tourist office closes on the 25th. Each holiday is covered in Luxembourg public holidays.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Luxembourg on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Getting about when it’s dark by mid-afternoon
With so little daylight, I wouldn’t hire a car for a December trip based in the capital. Public transport has been free nationwide since 1 March 2020, visitors included, and the T1 tram runs from Findel airport into the centre and on to Kirchberg with no changes. After a market or a concert at the weekend, the City Night Bus keeps going until 3:30.
If you do drive north or into the Mullerthal, remember that you must have M+S or alpine-symbol tyres whenever the road has ice, snow or frost, and in December that can be any morning. Coming by train via Brussels or Paris instead, remember you’re entering the Schengen area, where the EES registers British passport holders on arrival, and that your GHIC covers state healthcare but not everything a travel insurance policy does.
When I’d go in December
The first two weeks. Luxembourg’s schools break up on 19 December 2026 and stay off until 3 January, and from then the city gets busier and hotels fill sooner. Two days are enough for markets, cathedral and museums; with three, I’d add Echternach. The month before is Luxembourg in November and the year carries on with Luxembourg in January. The whole cold season is in Luxembourg in winter, and every month compared in the best time to visit Luxembourg.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxembourg and pick one that fits your day.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.

Frequently asked questions
How cold is Luxembourg in December?
Cold but rarely brutal. Findel averages 2.3°C and black ice turns up on about 1.4 days in the month. What wears you down is the damp, with 89.5 mm of rain and 11.3 foggy days, so bring a warm waterproof and shoes that cope with wet cobbles.
What is there to do in Luxembourg in December?
Wander the Winterlights markets in the capital, open until 3 January 2027, spend the dark hours in the museums and take a day out to Echternach or Clervaux. On the 6th comes Kleeschen, St Nicholas, who brings Luxembourg's children their presents.
Is anything open in Luxembourg on Christmas Day?
Shops are shut by law on the 25th, apart from bakeries, patisseries and a few food shops, which can open from 5:00 to 19:00. Restaurants and hotels aren't bound by that rule. On Christmas Eve shops close by 18:00 and banks shut in the afternoon.
Is Luxembourg worth visiting in December?
For a city weekend, yes, for the markets and the atmosphere. For walking in the countryside I'd look at another month, with 41.9 hours of sunshine across December and many seasonal sights closed.
Where can I go outside Luxembourg City in December?
Echternach, for its Christmas market and illuminated abbey; Clervaux, where Visit Luxembourg suggests a winter walk around the castle; and the Christmas market at the slate museum in Haut-Martelange, out west.
Does it snow in Luxembourg in December?
It can, but no official source gives a number of snow days. The capital's tourist office only says that, if you're lucky, there'll be some snowfall in winter.
