Harvest time on the Moselle
Luxembourg in September, my pick for a first visit
September in Luxembourg averages 14.3°C (58°F) with 174.9 hours of sunshine at Findel, and far fewer storms than summer. It's grape harvest month on the Moselle, with the biggest wine festivals of the year, the Schueberfouer's final night on 8 September 2027 and, in 2026, the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg. Local school holidays end on 14 September 2027.

- September averages 14.3°C (58°F) at Findel, with 174.9 hours of sunshine and barely two thunderstorms.
- It's harvest month, with Grevenmacher's festival on the second weekend and the Riesling Open on the third.
- The Schueberfouer closes on 8 September 2027 with half-price rides and fireworks.
- The Tour de Luxembourg ran from 16 to 20 September 2026; the 2027 date isn't out yet.
If I could only pick one month to go back to Luxembourg, it would be the second half of September. Local schools are back, the storms have mostly gone, the Moselle is in full harvest and everything seasonal is still open. I'd just check which weekend each festival falls on before booking flights.

01 Most beautiful
Harvest festivals, village by village
Grevenmacher's festival on the second weekend is, in the national portal's words, the country's biggest wine festival, and Wormeldange follows on the third with its Riesling Open, three days of open cellars.

02 To save money
Half-price rides on the last day
On the Schueberfouer's final day, 8 September 2027, rides are half price until 20:00, followed at 22:00 by fireworks on the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge.

03 My tip
A vineyard trail that only opens at harvest
The Am Herscht circuit, about 6 km through the vines, only runs during the grape harvest, with Fiederwäissen and onion tart along the way, according to the government portal.

04 Getting there
Pro cycling on the doorstep
In 2026 the Škoda Tour de Luxembourg crossed the country from 16 to 20 September, starting and finishing in the capital. The 2027 date hasn't been published yet.
Tour de Luxembourg
What I would book
When friends ask me when to go to Luxembourg for the first time, September is nearly always my answer. The heat of August has gone, the thunderstorms have largely packed up, schools in Britain and in Luxembourg are back by mid-month, and the Moselle spends the month picking grapes and throwing parties about it. Very little is closed yet. It’s hard to ask for more from a short break.
Settled, mild and mostly dry
Findel averages 14.3°C (58°F) in September, with 174.9 hours of sunshine and 66.6 mm of rain. The real change is in the storms, down to 2.3 on average after the seven or eight of high summer. Fog starts creeping back on the odd morning, nearly four days a month.
The range can be wide, as with any month on the cusp of autumn. On 15 September 2020 Findel hit 32.2°C (90°F), and on 30 September 1957 it slipped just below freezing, to −0.7°C. I’d pack layers, because the evenings turn cool quickly once the sun drops, and a light waterproof for the odd shower. The full series is in Luxembourg weather.
Why go to the Moselle in September?
Because this is harvest, and the river celebrates it. Grevenmacher puts on its grape and wine festival over the second weekend, a party that the government portal calls the biggest in the country, with the crowning of the Wine Queen, a parade and fireworks. A week later, on the third weekend, the villages of Wormeldange open their cellars for three days of Riesling Open and crown a Riesling Queen. In 2026 Schwebsingen added its own festival on the 6th and Remich its Crémant a Kultur Festival on the 20th.
One small thing I love is the Am Herscht circuit, about 6 km through the vines, which only runs during the harvest, serving Fiederwäissen, the young wine still fermenting, and onion tart. The whole calendar, through to October’s finale in Schengen, is in Luxembourg wine festivals.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Remich for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The Schueberfouer’s last night
The Glacis funfair, open since 20 August, shuts in 2027 on Wednesday 8 September. On that final day, says Visit Luxembourg, rides are half price until 20:00, and at 22:00 fireworks go up on the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, the Red Bridge linking the city to Kirchberg. If your trip starts in the first week of the month, I’d make a point of it. Opening times, history and getting there are in Schueberfouer.
Once the fair leaves, the Glacis gets its flea market back. The Glacismaart returns on the third Sunday of the month, from 10:00 to 17:00, with second-hand stalls, flowers and local produce.
A week of top-level cycling
The country’s big bike race is a September fixture too. In 2026 the 86th edition of the Tour de Luxembourg ran from 16 to 20 September, five stages and more than 700 km, starting from Place Guillaume II, with a queen stage from Wiltz to Diekirch and a time trial in Ettelbruck. Italy’s Davide Piganzoli won overall and Mathieu van der Poel took two stages. As of 30 September 2026 the organisers hadn’t announced the 2027 edition, so roadside fans should watch for it.

Holidays ending, seasons still running
Luxembourg’s school holidays end on 14 September 2027, and from then on there are far fewer families on the road. It’s when I’d walk the Mullerthal Trail, with good light and none of summer’s heat or storms; the service that carries luggage between stages keeps running until the end of November. The lakes close their official bathing season on 30 September (2026’s is over, and 2027’s opens on 1 May), and there are no bank holidays, so shops and museums keep normal hours.
Seasonal sights stay open all month and a little beyond. The Vianden chairlift runs until 19 October 2026, Grevenmacher’s butterfly garden opens daily until 31 October and The Family of Man, the photography exhibition at Clervaux Castle, keeps its season going until 1 January 2027. That’s why September is, for me, the best month to combine the capital with the north and the Moselle on one trip without finding doors shut. From the UK, Findel is the airport, the train comes in through Brussels or Paris, and the EES biometric check applies on your first entry.
Where it sits in the year
Arrive early in the month and you’ll catch the tail of Luxembourg in August, with the fair still open. Stay on and Luxembourg in October brings the Nuit des Musées and the end of the harvest. All three autumn months share a page in Luxembourg in autumn, and every month is compared in best time to visit Luxembourg.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Remich on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions
Is September a good month for weather in Luxembourg?
Yes, it's mild and steadier than summer. Findel averages 14.3°C (58°F), with 174.9 hours of sunshine and 66.6 mm of rain, and only 2.3 thunderstorms on average against eight in July. Morning fog starts to return, on about four days.
What wine festivals are on in Luxembourg in September?
Grevenmacher's grape and wine festival on the second weekend, with the crowning of the Wine Queen, and Wormeldange's Riesling Open on the third. In 2026 there were also Schwebsingen's festival on 6 September and Remich's Crémant a Kultur Festival on the 20th.
When does the Schueberfouer end?
In 2027, on Wednesday 8 September. On that last day rides are half price until 20:00 and there are fireworks at 22:00 on the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge.
When is the Tour de Luxembourg?
In 2026 the 86th Škoda Tour de Luxembourg ran from 16 to 20 September, over five stages and more than 700 km. The 2027 date hadn't been published by the end of September 2026.
Can you still swim in the lakes in September?
Yes, until 30 September, when the official bathing season ends, and only at approved areas. The 2026 season has now closed, and the 2027 one opens on 1 May. With a 14.3°C monthly average, though, the water is less inviting than in August.
Is September a good time to visit Luxembourg from the UK?
One of the best. English schools are back, and so are Luxembourg's after 14 September 2027, so it's quieter, the Moselle is harvesting and almost everything seasonal is open. You'll go through the Schengen EES check on arrival.
