Themed, free and in almost every district
Luxembourg's playgrounds, ranked by a parent-friendly eye
Luxembourg City has free themed playgrounds in almost every district. The best are the Bambësch forest playground, the pirate ship in the municipal park and the 7,500 m² inclusive play area in Merl park. Outside the capital, I'd head for the adventure playground at Echternach lake and the big one at Heringer Millen in the Mullerthal.

- Luxembourg City has free themed playgrounds in almost every district: pirate ship, castle, farm, airport and space.
- The most complete is the Bambësch forest playground, with a zip line, climbing wall, water play and a sound maze.
- Merl's 7,500 m² playground is fully inclusive, with ramps and adapted swings.
- Outside the capital, the best for visitors are at Echternach lake and Heringer Millen.
If you only have time for one, make it the Bambësch: forest, zip line and water play in one place, and something for every age. If you're in the centre and short of time, the pirate ship in the municipal park sorts out an afternoon without a single bus.
Before you go
What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The city in miniature, built for climbing
The Bambësch play structures are modelled on landmarks such as the Alzette, the Bock promontory, the Castle Bridge, the Hollow Tooth and the Three Towers. Children play inside the city they've just walked round.

02 My tip
Pack a spare set of clothes in summer
The pirate ship, Kaltreis, Merl and the Bambësch all have water play. On a hot day, a change of clothes saves a trip back to the hotel halfway through the afternoon.
-
03 Getting there
Take the bus to Merl
The tourist office warns that parking by Merl's inclusive playground is limited and suggests public transport, which in Luxembourg is free for everyone, visitors included.
Merl -
04 To save money
A whole day out for nothing
None of these playgrounds charge. If your children have outgrown swings, the treetop courses do cost money, and I cover them separately.
adventure parks in Luxembourg
My ranking, scored
Luxembourg's playgrounds, best first
My score out of 10 for a visiting family, weighing the range of equipment, the ages it suits, toilets and water, shade and how easy it is to reach. It's my own opinion drawn from the official listings.

A large pirate playground beside the two lakes in the far north. Worth it if you're already up in the Ardennes.
7.0 out of 10
British parents tend to plan Luxembourg around castles and casemates, and then discover the playgrounds by accident. The capital has turned them into small themed worlds, with a pirate ship, a castle, a farm, an airport and even a space station, and not one of them charges. The city runs 212 recreation spaces in all, from play areas to pitches and skateparks. These are the ones I’d pick, in order, plus a few worth the drive beyond the city.
Why the Bambësch comes first
It sits at the edge of the Bambësch forest, at 22 Rue de Bridel, and has recently been rebuilt. Its 8,571 m² are split into areas for different ages, and the equipment borrows from city landmarks such as the Alzette, the Bock promontory, the Castle Bridge, the Hollow Tooth and the Three Towers. There are slides, swings, a sandpit, a timber obstacle course, a zip line, a climbing wall and a water playground.
My favourite detail is the sound maze inside the castle structures, where children bang out tunes on xylophones. The other is that it’s been thought through for everyone. Some areas have firm flooring and ramps for wheelchair users, and there are toilets, drinking water, picnic tables, shade and a car park at the entrance. Budget a whole afternoon rather than half an hour. The city says bus 33 stops nearby, and in the same forest the tourist office points to the Juegdschlass, an 1873 hunting lodge that is now a restaurant, with American bison, donkeys and peacocks in the enclosures. If the children still have energy left, that finishes the day nicely.
The one in the city centre
If you’re in the old town and don’t fancy a bus, the pirate ship playground is in the Luxembourg municipal park, by Avenue Monterey. The city refurbished it recently, and it has a large ship, water play, slides, swings and a kiosk right next to it. With the Kinnekswiss lawn beside it for running about, it’s the easiest way to slot some play between two museums.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxemburgo for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
A tour of the neighbourhood playgrounds
Merl park has the city’s inclusive playground, 7,500 m² for children of any age and ability. You’ll find a big water and sand area, accessible paths and ramps, climbing and balancing zones, slides, tunnels, sensory games and adapted swings. Two towers themed on water and wind power add a bit of science. Parking nearby is scarce, so I’d come by bus.
At Kaltreis park in Bonnevoie, the theme is space. There’s a slide that looks like it has come from another planet, water play, a zip line, an outdoor gym, basketball, pétanque, beach volleyball, table tennis, barbecues, toilets and paved paths that suit a pushchair. In Belair, the castle playground has wooden towers, a big slide, toilets, a drinking fountain and benches for the grown-ups.
Cents goes for aviation, with a control tower to climb, a plane, a fire engine, slides, sand and a mini football pitch, plus easy parking outside. In Gasperich, by the Jardin anglais, the farm playground has wooden animals under tall trees, a separate corner for toddlers and a dog park next door. Limpertsberg has a climbing and jumping playground that’s mostly sand, with baby swings and two entrances.
Worth the drive outside the capital
The one I rate most is at Echternach lake. On the left bank, opposite the Roman villa, there’s an adventure playground for small and bigger children, a large sandpit kept clean by a wooden fence and toilets alongside. The Nonnemillen/Lac car park is 400 m away, and in summer the lake adds trampolines.
In the Mullerthal, the big playground at Heringer Millen has a marble run built from local wood, with marbles sold from a machine on site. I’d use it as a reward at the end of a trail stage. Up north, the Weiswampach lakes have a large pirate playground by the water.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxemburgo for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
What to bring
My list is short. Swimwear or spare clothes in summer, since four of the best have water play. A packed lunch, because most have tables and benches. Patience with parking at Merl. If your children have moved on from swings, the paid treetop courses are in adventure parks in Luxembourg, and the full family plan, with museums, transport and where to stay, is in Luxembourg with kids.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxemburgo on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
Villa Vauban, the city's art museum, with its white façade, modern extension and the lawn of the park
