  • Larochette is a commune of 2,241 people in the White Ernz valley, with Ernzen and Meysembourg.
  • Its ruined castle stands over the village on a sandstone spur; entry is €7.
  • It has three viewpoints, five local trails and Route 3 of the Mullerthal Trail.

Climb to the Verluerekascht before you set foot in the castle. From up there the whole village makes sense, rock, ruins and huddled roofs below, and the castle visit is twice as good afterwards.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    A castle on the sandstone

The castle ruins, left in this state by a fire around 1565, loom over the village from a sandstone spur. Adults pay €7.

  2. 02 My tip

    Three free viewpoints

The Verluerekascht, once the castle's lookout tower, the Himmelsbierg and the Salzdeebelchen give the best views of the village and the ruins.

  3. 03 To save money

    Hostel rather than hotel

Larochette's youth hostel has 79 beds and in September 2026 charged members from €30 a night with breakfast.

  4. 04 Getting there

    Towards Meysembourg

Trails L2 and L3 head for Meysembourg, whose neo-Renaissance castle is private but can be seen from the path along the Manzebaach.

  5. 05 To save money

    Barefoot at Kengert, for free

By the Kengert campsite, over the line in Vallée de l'Ernz, a trail of about 745 m lets you walk barefoot over sand, wood and pine cones. It costs nothing.

Larochette is one of those villages you recognise from a single photo. Ruins on a sandstone crag, wooded slopes and a tight little old town squeezed into the bottom of the White Ernz valley. visitluxembourg calls the castle its emblem, and that’s really all you need to know to see why it features on every list of Luxembourg’s prettiest villages.

A village named after its rock

The name gives it away. According to the local Syndicat d’Initiative, the place is first recorded in 1176 as Rupe, from the Latin rupes, a rock, and in Luxembourgish it’s An der Fiels. The village grew around a mill on the White Ernz, was walled with two gates and only spread beyond its walls after 1714. For centuries it lived from textiles, and there’s still a textile museum to tell that story.

STATEC counted 2,241 people here at the start of 2026, in the three localities of Larochette, Ernzen and Meysembourg. Administratively it sits in the canton of Mersch, but for visitors it’s part of the Mullerthal region.

The castle and the Bleech

The castle ruins, reduced to their present state by a fire around 1565, open from mid-March to mid-November for €7. I cover the visit in detail on my page about Larochette Castle. Down below, the Bleech square is the heart of village life, with historic buildings, alleys, cafés, restaurants and shops. Among them stands the Manoir de Roebé, from the 17th and 18th centuries, now the town hall. St Donatus church on the same square was closed for maintenance in September 2026 and could only be seen from outside.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Diekirch before prices climb.

Where are the best views?

From three viewpoints. The Verluerekascht stands about 120 m west of the centre at roughly 300 m above sea level; it was once a watchtower linked to the castle by a wall, and legend says its name, lost snack, comes from a cook who tripped while carrying the masons’ lunch. The Himmelsbierg sits on the Auto-Pédestre circuit, and the Salzdeebelchen completes the set. Local trails L1 to L5 add up to about 30 km, with L1 and L5 heading for the castle, L2 and L3 towards Meysembourg and L4 through the Noumerleeën rocks in neighbouring Nommern.

Getting there and staying

Drivers come up the N14 from Luxembourg City or Diekirch. On public transport, free throughout the country, the simplest route is the train to Mersch and then bus 233 or 234. For somewhere to sleep there’s a youth hostel and there are campsites; STATEC counted one hotel in 2025, but the Syndicat’s own website said in September 2026 that the village had none for the moment. If you’re stuck, look at the wider Mullerthal hotels. Route 3 of the Trail continues to Beaufort, and Heffingen begins just to the south.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Diekirch before prices climb.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Diekirch and choose by the reviews.
