St Andrew's Church in Troisvierges, built in stone with an onion-domed bell tower, beside white houses

Canton of Clervaux, the country's far north

Troisvierges, a railway town, three virgin saints and the roof of the country

Troisvierges (Ulflingen in German, Ëlwen in Luxembourgish) is Luxembourg's northernmost commune, with 3,708 residents on 1 January 2026. Its French name comes from three virgin saints, Faith, Hope and Charity, honoured in its baroque church of 1658, and the Kneiff, the highest point in the country at 560 m, lies within its boundaries.

  • Troisvierges is Luxembourg's northernmost commune, with 3,708 residents.
  • Its baroque church of 1658 holds the statues of the three virgins that name the town.
  • It's a station on CFL line 10, free within the country.
  • The Kneiff (560 m) and Buurgplaatz (559 m) are both in the commune.
  • There were no hotels in 2025; stay in Clervaux.

Troisvierges is the north's gateway by rail, and that's how I'd use it. I'd step into the Franciscan church, climb the Sideschlee for the view back over the town and, time allowing, bag the Kneiff. For a bed, Clervaux, because there were no hotels here in 2025.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

The church of the three virgins

Completed in 1658, it's baroque, has one of the oldest organs in the country, paintings from the school of Rubens and statues of Faith, Hope and Charity, who gave the town its name.

  2. 02 Getting there

Straight up from the capital by train

Troisvierges is a stop on CFL line 10, free in second class within Luxembourg. The railway arrived in December 1866 and transformed the town.

  3. 03 Most beautiful

    The Sideschlee, on foot only

This slate ridge gives a panoramic view over the whole town. It's on the Éislek Trail, the Éislek Pad Troisvierges and local trail TV 3, and cars can't reach it.

    E-bikes from the tourist office

The Tourist Info, in the campsite on rue de Binsfeld and right on the Éislek Trail, hires out two e-bikes from 1 June. Booking needed.

What I would book

Troisvierges is where the map runs out. The commune covers Luxembourg’s northern tip, with the country’s northernmost point inside its boundary, and has 3,708 residents spread over eight localities. It goes by three names, Troisvierges in French, Ulflingen in German and Ëlwen in Luxembourgish, and the French one is the youngest.

Three virgins and a pilgrims’ name

According to the commune, the town first appears in 1353 as Ulvelingen. The French name only arrived in the 17th century, when Walloon pilgrims started using it on their way to the shrine of the three virgins, Faith, Hope and Charity, a cult spread by the Franciscans. The church in the centre was completed in 1658 around an earlier chapel first recorded in 1489. It’s baroque, with one of the oldest organs in the country, paintings from the school of Rubens and statues of the three saints. It’s the one stop here I wouldn’t skip.

A town the railway built

Until the mid-19th century Troisvierges was an isolated corner squeezed between Prussia and a newly created Belgium. The Luxembourg to Troisvierges railway opened in December 1866, and by 1871 the population had doubled to 726. By 1910 it was 1,550. visitluxembourg explains that once the line to Saint-Vith opened, the station handled up to 800 wagons a day, that it suffered in both world wars and that US Army engineers had it running again within two months of the German retreat in 1945.

It’s still a stop on CFL line 10, free in second class, and the easiest way to reach the far north without a car. I go through the details in my guide to trains in Luxembourg.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Clervaux before prices climb.

Walking on the roof of the country

The commune boasts 17 waymarked walks. The most poignant is the sentier des passeurs, two routes of 12 and 9 km from the station that trace the escapes into Belgium of resistance members and young men refusing forced conscription at the end of the Second World War. The Sideschlee, a slate ridge with a view over the whole town, lies on the Éislek Trail, the northern stretch of the Escapardenne, and can only be reached on foot.

Then there’s the summit of the country. In Wilwerdange, within the commune, the Kneiff, at 560 metres, is the highest point in Luxembourg, while Buurgplaatz in Huldange reaches 559. Huldange has another curiosity, because for eighty years, from 1839 to 1919, a point there known as «auf der Schmiede» was where Belgium, Prussia and Luxembourg touched.

The practical bits

The Tourist Info is in the campsite at 46 rue de Binsfeld, right on the Éislek Trail, and hires out two e-bikes from 1 June. Watch the hours, as visitluxembourg only listed its 2026 times up to 30 September, Monday to Friday, so in autumn it’s worth ringing first. In summer there’s a heated outdoor pool with a 45-metre slide, and in the park, the Garden of Europe designed by students from Edinburgh.

As for beds, the commune had a campsite but not a single hotel in STATEC’s 2025 figures. I’d stay in Clervaux, on the same line, and you’ll find it compared in hotels in Clervaux. Next door is Weiswampach with its lakes, linked by the Our Nature Park’s 28 km e-bike route.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Clervaux before prices climb.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Clervaux and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
