Wilwerwiltz, in the commune of Kiischpelt, with white houses in the Clerve valley, meadows and wooded hills

In Luxembourg a holiday cottage goes by the name of gîte or location de vacances, and the national tourist board places them in all five regions, from the Éislek to the Minett. There are also unusual stays with official listings, such as treehouses in Esch-sur-Alzette's animal park and the 11 Kabaisercher cabins along the Minett Trail. STATEC counts them among its 126 short-stay establishments of 2025.

  • In Luxembourg a holiday cottage is called a gîte, location de vacances or chambre d'hôtes.
  • visitluxembourg places them in all five regions and the capital.
  • There are unusual stays with official listings, such as treehouses in Esch-sur-Alzette.
  • The Minett Trail has 11 Kabaisercher cabins along its 90 km.

For me, a Luxembourg holiday cottage makes most sense in the Éislek, in the Our valley or by the Upper Sûre. It's a landscape of small villages and woodland where hotels are few and far between, and a place of your own lets you head out walking without watching the breakfast clock.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

Sleep in the trees in Esch-sur-Alzette

visitluxembourg lists treehouses in the heart of the Gaalgebierg animal park in Esch-sur-Alzette. It's one of the few unusual stays with an official listing in the country's second city.

  2. 02 Worth the splurge

    The Minett Trail cabins

The 90 km Minett route has 11 cabins called Kabaisercher spread along its ten stages. Staying in one is the most original way to explore the old mining country.

    The northern nature parks

The Our nature park covers 420 km² and eight communes, the Upper Sûre park 200 km² and five. That's where a house in the countryside makes most sense.

    A cottage isn't a holiday flat

If you want a flat with a kitchen in a town like Vianden, see the apartments page. Here I mean whole houses, farms and guest rooms out in the countryside.

What I would book

If you’re hunting for a holiday cottage in Luxembourg, the first hurdle is the name. Nobody there calls it that. People talk about a gîte, a location de vacances or a chambre d’hôtes, in French, which is the language of trade and hospitality. The second hurdle is that there’s no official count by type, so no invented number from me. I can, however, tell you where the national tourist board places them and where they make most sense.

What the statistics show

STATEC doesn’t separate out cottages. In 2025 it counted 126 short-stay tourist establishments that are neither hotels nor campsites, with 3,613 bed places, up from 96 a year earlier. That covers holiday homes, apartments, guest rooms and the eight youth hostels too. It’s a small figure next to the 64 campsites and their 32,140 places, and that says a lot about the country. Rural Luxembourg is done more under canvas than behind a front door. That’s no bad thing for you, because it means the cottages that do exist are spread thinly and rarely feel crowded, but it also means the good ones in summer are worth securing early.

Where does a house in the countryside make sense?

visitluxembourg places rentals, gîtes and guest rooms in the Mullerthal, the Éislek, the Moselle, the Minett, the Guttland and the capital too, and says they all come with modern comforts. For me, where it really pays off is the north.

The Éislek, the Luxembourg Ardennes, has two nature parks created in 2005. The Our park covers 420 km² across eight communes, Clervaux, Vianden and Troisvierges among them; the Upper Sûre park 200 km² and five communes, around the country’s biggest lake. It’s a landscape of small villages, valleys and forest where hotels are scarce and a place of your own gives you the freedom to walk at your own pace. It’s all in Luxembourg nature parks.

The Mullerthal is the other strong option, with its sandstone rocks and footpaths, and the Moselle the most restful, among vineyards and wine villages. In both, I’d look for a house close to a waymarked route, so you can set off walking from the front door without getting in the car, which is what you appreciate most out in the countryside.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Clervaux on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Places that aren’t a normal house

The national tourist board has a section on what it calls unusual accommodation, and this is where Luxembourg surprises. It lists a mushroom-shaped house, a tower and treehouses in the middle of the Gaalgebierg animal park in Esch-sur-Alzette. It also lists spaces to stay in Clemency Castle, in the south-west, which I cover on another page.

Then there’s the Minett Trail, the 90 km route in ten stages through the old mining country of the south, with 11 cabins called Kabaisercher along the way. Sleeping in one is, to my mind, the most original way to see the Minett, an area hardly anyone visits and a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2020. I explain it in Minett Trail.

Cottage or apartment?

The line is fine, but this is how I draw it. An apartment is a flat or studio inside a town or village, like those visitluxembourg mentions in Vianden or Esch-sur-Sûre. A cottage is a whole house or a room on a farm, in the countryside. If the first is what you’re after, see Luxembourg apartments.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Clervaux on Expedia and filter by area before price.

What I’d check before booking

First, transport. Buses are free across the country, but in the countryside services are less frequent, so check on mobiliteit.lu which line passes and how often. Second, shopping. The trading hours law in force since June 2026 allows shops to open until 9pm at most on weekdays and 7pm at weekends and on holidays, and small villages often have no shop at all, so arrive with the food shop done. Third, arrival, because with no reception desk you’ll want to sort out keys in good time.

Travelling solo or as a couple for just a couple of nights, a small hotel in a village will give you almost the same with less logistics. I cover that in boutique hotels in Luxembourg. And if a tent appeals more than a house, the north has far more camping in Luxembourg.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Clervaux and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.

Frequently asked questions

Are there holiday cottages in Luxembourg?

Yes, though locally they're called gîtes, locations de vacances or chambres d'hôtes. visitluxembourg places them in the Mullerthal, the Éislek, the Moselle, the Minett, the Guttland and the capital.

Where's the best place to rent a cottage in Luxembourg?

For me, the Éislek, in the Our valley or by the Upper Sûre lake, home to the two northern nature parks. For rocks and footpaths, the Mullerthal; for vineyards, the Moselle.

What unusual places to stay are there in Luxembourg?

visitluxembourg lists treehouses in Esch-sur-Alzette's animal park, a mushroom-shaped house, a tower and the 11 Kabaisercher cabins along the Minett Trail.

How many holiday homes are there in Luxembourg?

STATEC doesn't separate them. In 2025 it counted 126 short-stay establishments that aren't hotels or campsites, with 3,613 bed places, covering houses, apartments and the eight youth hostels.

Cottage or hotel in the north?

With family or a group, and for more than three nights, the cottage. For one or two nights passing through, a hotel in Vianden or Clervaux is more practical, because in the countryside every shop and every dinner means a journey.
