Canton of Wiltz, population 8,538
Wiltz, the Ardennes town that went on strike in 1942
Wiltz is the main town of western Éislek, with 8,538 residents on 1 January 2026 and the legal status of a town. Up top is the castle, home to the National Brewing Museum and the Battle of the Bulge museum; below are the Jardin de Wiltz and the Plomm children's museum. The 1942 general strike against forced conscription started here.

- Wiltz has 8,538 residents and is one of Luxembourg's twelve places with town status.
- Its castle houses the brewing museum, the Battle of the Bulge museum and a summer festival.
- The 1942 general strike against forced conscription started here.
- Trains run on the Kautenbach branch, free in second class.
I'd come to Wiltz for the history rather than the postcard. The castle and its two museums, the strike memorial and the Jardin de Wiltz fit into a morning, and I'd keep the afternoon for the Upper Sûre lake, which sits in the same canton.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
A summer festival with a castle as the backdrop
Since 1953 the castle staircase has served as the stage for the Festival de Wiltz every June and July. A retractable roof added in 1991 keeps around a thousand spectators dry.

02 To save money
Two museums included in the LuxembourgPass
The National Brewing Museum costs €9 with audio guide and tasting, and is free for under-21s and with the pass. The Plomm children's museum is also covered by the LuxembourgPass.

03 Getting there
By train from the capital, with October engineering works
Wiltz has a station on the branch line from Kautenbach. On the weekends of 10-11 and 17-18 October 2026, CFL replaces trains with buses between Ettelbruck, Kautenbach, Wiltz and Gouvy.

04 My tip
The lake is in the same canton
Wiltz belongs to the Naturpark Öewersauer, the Upper Sûre nature park. In summer, pair the town with an afternoon swimming or walking by the reservoir.

What I would book
Let me be upfront about Wiltz. It isn’t Vianden or Clervaux. There’s no fairy-tale castle hanging over a river and no UNESCO-listed exhibition. What it does have is a 20th-century story heavier than almost any other town in Luxembourg, plus a small cultural circuit that makes for a full morning if you plan it well. With 8,538 residents on 1 January 2026, it’s one of the twelve places with official town status and the anchor of western Éislek.
The town that refused
In August 1942 the German occupiers imposed compulsory military service on young Luxembourgers. The answer was a general strike which, according to visitluxembourg, began right here and spread across the country. The reprisals were brutal and 21 people were executed. That’s why Wiltz was later officially recognised as a ‘martyr town’.
The National Strike Monument keeps the memory alive. It’s a lighthouse built from local slate and unveiled on 30 September 1956. Facing the street, a red sandstone relief shows David taking on Goliath; on the back, arrested strikers fall under gunfire at the Hinzert concentration camp. A ceremony is held there every 31 August. For me it’s the stop that gives the rest of the visit its meaning.
Two years later the Battle of the Bulge left the town badly damaged. The government’s portal records an odd tradition from those days, the American ‘Saint Nick’ of 5 December 1944, still celebrated today. Surviving civilians also vowed to build the Fatima monument among the ruins. The castle museum covers all this, and the wider Battle of the Bulge in Luxembourg has its own guide.
Up at the castle, beer and memory
The upper town is crowned by the castle, which now holds the tourist office, the National Brewing Museum and the Battle of the Bulge Museum. The brewing museum, in the old stables, costs €9 including audio guide and tasting, and costs nothing if you’re 20 or under or carry the LuxembourgPass. The building’s history, opening hours and festival are covered in Wiltz Castle. In front of the grand staircase sits an amphitheatre that has hosted the Festival de Wiltz every summer since 1953.
visitluxembourg also lists the An der Géitz fire brigade museum in the lower town, with vintage fire engines, and, since 2024, the Kannermusée Plomm, Luxembourg’s first children’s museum, designed for ages 0 to 12 and free with the pass.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Sûre for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
A garden that is an artwork
The Jardin de Wiltz is what surprises me most here. It covers 2.5 hectares on the Gruberbeerig, off rue de la Montagne, with planting, terraces, sculptures and stone fields that together make a living work of art. The artists’ group Der Blaue Kompressor started it in 1983, and it’s tended by people with disabilities, the long-term unemployed, craftspeople and artists. It’s open all year, and every other year the Nuit des Lampions fills it with thousands of lanterns, light installations and live music.
Kids, bikes and a pool
On the north side of town, the Kaul leisure park combines a campsite, a heated outdoor pool of about 660 m², an 81 m² paddling pool, a skate park, a bike park and two playgrounds, one with a wooden castle. RentaBike hires out mountain bikes and e-bikes there from April to October. A cycle path follows the old railway towards Bastogne, passing through Winseler on its way into Belgium.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Esch-sur-Sûre for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
A calendar of its own
Besides the festival, Wiltz holds the Geenzefest, the broom flower festival, at Whitsun, with a parade on the Monday. It moves with Whitsun each year and the 2027 programme hasn’t been announced, so I won’t give a date.
Getting there and staying over
Wiltz has a station on the branch line that starts at Kautenbach, on the northern CFL line; second class costs nothing within Luxembourg. Kautenbach itself, according to the Kiischpelt commune, is served by the fast Liège-Luxembourg trains, which is handy if you’re arriving from Belgium. On the weekends of 10-11 and 17-18 October 2026, buses replace trains between Ettelbruck, Kautenbach, Wiltz and Gouvy.
As for beds, STATEC counted just two hotels and one campsite in the commune in 2025. If they’re full, I’d look at Esch-sur-Sûre and the lake, which also make the best afternoon trip from here.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Esch-sur-Sûre on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions
Is Wiltz worth visiting?
Yes, for half a day if you like history. The castle holds the National Brewing Museum and the Battle of the Bulge museum, the strike memorial tells a story few visitors know, and the Jardin de Wiltz is a genuinely unusual garden.
How do I get from Luxembourg City to Wiltz by train?
Wiltz has a station on the branch from Kautenbach, off CFL's northern line 10. Second-class travel inside Luxembourg is free. On 10-11 and 17-18 October 2026 a replacement bus runs instead.
What happened in Wiltz in 1942?
After forced conscription was imposed in August 1942, a general strike against the occupiers broke out in Wiltz and spread across the country. The crackdown left 21 Luxembourgers executed, remembered today by a lighthouse-shaped monument.
When is the Festival de Wiltz?
It takes place every summer in June and July in the castle amphitheatre, as it has since 1953. Dates for 2027 have not yet been published on visitluxembourg.
Are there hotels in Wiltz?
Only a few. STATEC counted 2 hotels and 1 campsite in the commune in 2025. Esch-sur-Sûre, in the same canton, has hotels, holiday flats and guesthouses as a fallback.
What does the name Wiltz mean?
According to visitluxembourg, the name is Celtic and means ‘by the stream’. In Luxembourgish the town is called Wooltz.
