  • Wincrange is Luxembourg's largest commune by area, with 113.36 km² and 27 localities.
  • It was formed in 1977 from Asselborn, Boevange, Hachiville and Oberwampach.
  • Highlights are the Asselborn mill, the Cinqfontaines memorial and Park Sënnesräich.
  • It had one hotel in 2025; stay in Clervaux or at the mill itself.

Wincrange has no centre to head for, just places scattered across the plateau, so I'd go by car with a list ready. If I could only pick two, I'd choose the Asselborn mill and the Cinqfontaines memorial, one of those places that makes you stop.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The country's oldest working mill

The commune believes the Asselborn mill is the oldest in the Grand Duchy still in working order. Since 1984 it has been a hotel and restaurant with a mill museum inside.

    Asselborn
  2. 02 Worth the splurge

A day for the senses at Lullange

Park Sënnesräich plays with all five senses, with a barefoot trail, an interactive hall, a giant air cushion and a maze. Adults pay €9 and children aged 4 to 12, €7.

    Park Sënnesräich
  3. 03 To save money

    Free with the LuxembourgPass

Park Sënnesräich's interactive museum is free with the pass. The Cinqfontaines memorial and the Hachiville insect trail cost nothing at all.

    LuxembourgPass

Wincrange turns a Luxembourg rule on its head. Here the commune is huge and the village it’s named after is tiny. At 113.36 km², it is the country’s largest commune by area on STATEC figures, almost 30 km² bigger than Clervaux, and it gathers 27 localities and 5,038 residents in the west of the canton of Clervaux, right up against Belgium. Further south, in the canton of Wiltz, Winseler is almost all forest and also borders Belgium.

A 1977 commune named after a hamlet

The commune tells its own story candidly. The village of Wincrange, recorded as «Winx» in 786, had fewer than a hundred residents when it became the seat in 1977 thanks to its central position. That year the former communes of Asselborn, Boevange, Hachiville and Oberwampach joined together, each with bigger villages of their own. So there’s no centre to visit here, just places spread across the plateau, and I’d tour them by car.

Asselborn and its mill

The village with the most history is Asselborn, which grew up beside the ancient Antwerp to Rome route. Its mill, according to the commune, is the country’s oldest working mill, and since 1984 it has been a hotel and restaurant with a small water-mill museum. The Éislek Trail comes through too, ending its second stage at Asselborn, and the Éislek Pad Asselborn follows the Trëtterbaach valley.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Clervaux before prices climb.

Cinqfontaines, a place to pause

Two kilometres from Troisvierges, at Cinqfontaines, the Congregation of the Sacred Heart built a monastery between 1904 and 1907. In March 1941 the Nazis seized it and turned it into an internment site for Jews from across the country, mostly elderly and sick, who were deported to ghettos and extermination camps in the East between 1941 and 1943. In 1944 the US Army used it as a field hospital, and a memorial was dedicated in 1969. The state bought it in 2020 for a remembrance and education centre. The building can’t be visited, but the memorial in front is open to all. It belongs on any route covering Luxembourg in the Second World War.

Near Maulusmühle, in the woods, a monument with the wreckage of an aircraft shot down on 21 March 1945 remembers its crew, whose graves lie alongside.

Days out with children and other stops

Lullange is home to Park Sënnesräich, built around the five senses, with a barefoot trail, an interactive hall, a huge air cushion, a playground and a maze. Adults pay €9 and children aged 4 to 12 pay €7, and the interactive museum is free with the LuxembourgPass. In early October 2026 it opened only at weekends, 10am to 5pm. At Hachiville, beside the Hëlzer Klaus hermitage, a pilgrimage site, there’s a 2.8 km insect trail with nine interactive stations. And Wincrange’s indoor pool, 25 by 10 metres, opens to the public with its floor set at 60 cm, though it closes during school holidays and on bank holidays.

In Oberwampach, the church keeps a 13th-century tower and 15th-century frescoes in the nave. The village was also home to Jean Gaspard de Cicignon, who led the rebuilding of Trondheim in Norway after the fire of 1681.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Clervaux before prices climb.

Where to stay

In 2025 STATEC found just one hotel-type establishment here, and not one campsite. I’d sleep at the Asselborn mill itself or in Clervaux, compared in my guide to hotels in Clervaux.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Clervaux and choose by the reviews.

A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.

So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.
