Long-distance coaches and cross-border buses

Getting to Luxembourg by coach

By coach you'll mostly reach Luxembourg with the two companies the tourist board names, Flibco and FlixBus. Flibco runs from Charleroi airport to Luxembourg in about 2 hours 30 minutes, from €19.90, and FlixBus lists four stops in the country. From Trier in Germany, regional bus 302 reaches Findel airport and Howald.

  • visitluxembourg names Flibco and FlixBus as long-distance coaches to Luxembourg.
  • Flibco links Charleroi airport and Luxembourg in about 2 hours 30 minutes, from €19.90.
  • FlixBus stops at Luxembourg, Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange and Rodange.
  • From Trier, bus 302 reaches Findel airport and Howald.

The coach only wins for me in one case, when a cheap flight into Charleroi really does save money against flying straight to Luxembourg. Two and a half hours on the road after a flight is a lot, so the saving has to be worth it.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

    Charleroi, the budget detour

Flibco publishes a direct run between Charleroi airport and Luxembourg of about 2 hours 30 minutes, from €19.90 online, with one cabin bag and three hold bags included.

  2. 02 My tip

Miss the coach, take the next one

Flibco says that if you miss your coach or your flight is late, you can use your ticket on the next one at no extra cost, subject to availability, and change or cancel up to six hours before.

  3. 03 Watch out

    No Flibco from Luxembourg airport

Findel's website says Flibco isn't currently running any connection from the airport. Don't plan a link with Hahn around that coach.

    Frankfurt to Luxembourg
  4. 04 Money

Border buses are free up to the line

On cross-border RGTR buses, free travel runs to the last stop before the border, according to CFL. The section on the other side is paid.

    Luxembourg free public transport

What I would book

The coach is the least common way to reach Luxembourg from Britain, but it has its place. The tourist board presents it as an alternative to rail and air from cities in the neighbouring countries and names two companies as examples, Flibco and FlixBus. Here’s what I could confirm about each, and when I think it’s worth it.

The best-documented route is Flibco’s between Charleroi airport in Belgium and Luxembourg. The company describes it as a direct shuttle with no stops, taking about 2 hours 30 minutes on average depending on traffic, from €19.90 per person online. According to Flibco, Charleroi airport is 196 km north-west of Luxembourg.

Two details stand out. The fare includes a cabin bag up to 10 kg and three hold bags up to 25 kg each, which is more than most budget flights allow. And if you miss the coach or your flight is late, Flibco says you can use the ticket on the next departure at no extra cost, subject to space, and change or cancel up to six hours before.

And Flibco from Luxembourg airport?

Not at the moment. Findel’s website states plainly that Flibco isn’t offering any connection from the airport and points you to flibco.com for news. I mention it because plenty of pages still show a link with Frankfurt-Hahn, and as of September 2026 it isn’t running from Findel. What is confirmed in that direction is in Frankfurt to Luxembourg.

FlixBus, four stops in the country

On its website FlixBus names four Luxembourg stops, the capital plus three towns in the south-west, Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange and Rodange. What I couldn’t get from the page were departure cities and timetables, so I won’t quote a route. If you’re interested, search its planner from where you’ll be and check the exact stop, because Esch and the capital aren’t the same thing.

If the coach drops you at Esch-sur-Alzette, Differdange or Rodange rather than the capital, that’s fine. Esch is the country’s second city, with about 38,300 people according to STATEC, and from any of those stops the onward train or bus to Luxembourg City is free. mobiliteit.lu, the official public transport planner, gives you the connection on the day.

Regional buses across the border

Besides the coaches, some regional buses cross the border, and with those it’s worth knowing what’s free. CFL explains that on cross-border RGTR buses, free travel is valid up to the last stop served before the border. The rest is paid.

For visitors, line 302 is the handy one, running from Trier through Wasserbillig and Findel to Howald. Once you’re inside Luxembourg, any city or regional bus is free, and the wider network is in Luxembourg buses.

Keep your passport on you

Belgium, France, Germany and Luxembourg are all in Schengen, but that doesn’t mean the passport can stay in your suitcase. Germany is running temporary border checks, according to the UK government, so keep it with you on any cross-border coach. Remember the Schengen passport rules on issue date and validity, and the biometric registration at your first Schengen border.

Is there a coach from the UK?

No official source I read confirms a direct coach from Britain, and I won’t invent one. From the UK the clear options are a flight, with Luxair’s route pages for London City, Manchester and Edinburgh, or the train via Brussels and Eurostar. I compare them all in how to get to Luxembourg.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxemburgo on GetYourGuide.

When I’d choose it

Before deciding, add up the whole journey rather than the coach fare alone, including the flight to Charleroi, any bag fees and the time on the road. A cheap ticket stops being cheap once the extras pile up.

Only in two situations. First, if a flight into Charleroi comes in well below a direct flight to Luxembourg and you don’t mind adding two and a half hours by road. Second, if you’re already in Trier or the surrounding region and bus 302 drops you right where you want to be. For everything else, the train or a direct flight feels more comfortable to me, especially knowing that public transport is free once you arrive.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
