When to go to Luxembourg, depending on what you're after
The best time to visit Luxembourg is May to September, when every month tops 170 hours of sunshine at Findel and castles, the Vianden chairlift and the swimming lakes are open. May and September are my picks, averaging 13.5°C and 14.3°C with everything seasonal open. For the Winterlights markets, go between 20 November 2026 and 3 January 2027.

The best time is May to September, with more than 170 hours of sunshine a month at Findel.
May and September are my picks, mild and with every seasonal sight open.
In winter the capital shines with Winterlights (20 Nov 2026 to 3 Jan 2027), but days are dark and seasonal sights close.
National Day is 22 and 23 June; the 2027 Schueberfouer runs from 20 August to 8 September.
If I could only pick one slot, it'd be the second half of May or early September. There's light for a morning walk and a castle in the afternoon, the seasonal sights are open, and in May Luxembourg's schools haven't broken up for summer yet.

What I would keep in mind

September, harvest time without the heat
September averages 14.3°C with 174.9 hours of sunshine at Findel, and the Moselle's harvest festivals get going. Luxembourg's summer school holidays run until 14 September 2027.
In 2026-27 schools break for All Saints (31 Oct to 8 Nov), Christmas (19 Dec to 3 Jan), Carnival (6 to 14 Feb), Easter (27 Mar to 11 Apr), Whitsun (29 May to 6 Jun) and summer (16 Jul to 14 Sep).
In 2026 the Vianden chairlift ran from 4 April to 19 October and The Family of Man in Clervaux from 18 March to 1 January. From November to March, check opening times before you go.
The eve brings a torchlight parade and fireworks from the Adolphe Bridge, and the 23rd a parade and Te Deum. In 2027 that's a Tuesday night and a Wednesday.
My own view, weighing three things: MeteoLux sunshine and average temperature, what's open (castles, chairlift, lakes) and how many people you'll share it with because of school holidays or big festivals. Score out of 10.
14.3°C on average, 174.9 hours of sunshine, the Moselle harvest and wine festivals, and everything open. The Schueberfouer wraps up early in the month.
226.3 hours of sunshine, lakes open for swimming from the 1st, the Octave until 2 May 2027 and the night marathon on the 8th. Watch the four public holidays.
Good weather and the Schueberfouer from the 20th, but it lines up with school holidays across half the continent, and it can get hot.
7.2 out of 10
You can visit Luxembourg in any month, but it isn’t the same trip in each. The capital works all year. The north, the Mullerthal and the Moselle depend far more on daylight, on seasonal opening and on the festival calendar. This is how I’d pick a date.
The short answer is May or September
Asked without any other detail, I say May or September. Both are mild at Findel (13.5°C and 14.3°C, around 56 to 58°F), both are bright (226.3 and 174.9 hours of sunshine) and both have the seasonal sights open, from the Vianden chairlift to the swimming lakes, which the national portal says usually run from 1 May to 30 September. May also sits well clear of Luxembourg’s summer school holidays, which in 2027 run from 16 July to 14 September, so early September still overlaps with them.
May has the Octave until 2 May 2027 and the ING Night Marathon on the 8th. September brings the grape harvest and the Moselle’s wine festivals. Either makes a good first trip.
What if I only want the capital?
Then any month works, and winter gains ground. Winterlights takes over the city for six weeks, 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with Christmas markets across the centre, and the museums, the cathedral and the casemates don’t care about the weather. What you lose is light. December manages 41.9 hours of sunshine and more than eleven foggy days, and afternoons end early. For a city weekend that doesn’t bother me. For combining with the north, it does. Given the choice, I’d go for the last week of Luxembourg in November, when the first markets overlap with the Fête des Vins et Crémants on 27 to 29 November.
For walking in the Mullerthal or the Ardennes, April, May, June and September. April is the driest month at Findel (49.4 mm), and from 1 April the Move We Carry service listed by Visit Luxembourg carries your bags between stages. July and August are fine for walking too, but they’re the stormiest months, as I explain in Luxembourg in July.
For seasonal castles and museums, April to October. In 2026 the Vianden chairlift ran from 4 April to 19 October and The Family of Man, in Clervaux, from 18 March to 1 January. For wine, September and October, with Schengen’s Hunnefeier on 18 October 2026 closing the harvest, which I cover in Luxembourg in October. For swimming, 1 May to 30 September at the approved lakes.
Festivals worth planning around
Four dates would make me move a trip. National Day, with its eve on 22 June (torches and fireworks from the Adolphe Bridge) and the day itself on the 23rd. The Schueberfouer, the capital’s great funfair, from 20 August to 8 September 2027 on the Champ du Glacis. The Octave of Our Lady, between 17 April and 2 May 2027, with its market on Place Guillaume II. And Echternach’s dancing procession, listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage and always held on Whit Tuesday. They’re all in the Luxembourg events calendar.
Of the country’s 11 public holidays, three hit travellers hard. On New Year’s Day, 1 May and Christmas Day the law keeps shops shut, bakeries and patisseries aside, according to guichet.lu. On the other holidays shops can open with Sunday hours at most, 5:00 to 19:00. In 2027 May stacks up four of them (the 1st, Ascension on the 6th, Europe Day on the 9th and Whit Monday on the 17th), so that month I’d book early and check each sight’s hours day by day. The season changes your suitcase too, which I cover in what to pack for Luxembourg.
Getting there from the UK, whatever the season
Luxair publishes a Luxembourg to London City route, while the airport’s list of 16 airlines includes British Airways, easyJet and Ryanair. Timetables shift between winter and summer and there’s no official list of UK routes I can quote, so check when you book. By rail, the TGV from Paris takes 2 hours 10 minutes. From the airport, tram T1 and buses 16 and 29 reach the city free of charge. Bear in mind that as a British visitor you’ll be registered in the EES at your first Schengen border, so allow a little more time on arrival.
I wouldn’t rule any month out, but January and February are the hardest outside the capital, averaging 1.4°C and 2.2°C with little light. August has good weather but coincides with school holidays across much of Europe and the hottest days; Findel’s record is 39.0°C, on 25 July 2019.
vdl.lu, luxembourg-city.com, luxembourg.public.lu and organisers' websites, checked on 30 September 2026. Echternach's dancing procession is on Whit Tuesday; its 2027 date hadn't been published.

Luxembourg's 2027 summer school holidays end in mid-September.
See the answer
True. They run from 16 July to 14 September 2027, according to the calendar Visit Luxembourg publishes.
May or September for me. Both average 13.5°C to 14.3°C at Findel, with 175 to 226 hours of sunshine, everything seasonal open, and no clash with Luxembourg's July-August school break in May.
How many days do you need in Luxembourg?
One or two days covers the capital. To add the Mullerthal, Vianden and the Moselle, I'd allow four. The one-, two- and three-day itineraries in this guide lay it out hour by hour.
Is Luxembourg worth visiting in winter?
For the capital, yes, especially during Winterlights (20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027). For the north and walking, less so. December averages only 41.9 hours of sunshine and several seasonal sights close.
When is Luxembourg National Day?
23 June, a public holiday. On the eve, the 22nd, there's a torchlight parade and fireworks from the Adolphe Bridge. In 2027 they fall on a Tuesday and Wednesday.
When is Luxembourg quietest?
Outside Luxembourg's school holidays and big festivals. In 2027, for example, there are no school holidays between 4 January and 5 February, or between 12 April and 28 May.
Which month has the least rain in Luxembourg?
April, with 49.4 mm on average at Findel. It still rains all year, though, 831 mm spread across twelve months.
