Liechtenstein events calendar, from the October fair to summer 2027

Liechtenstein doesn’t do big international events, and I don’t say that as a criticism. What it has is a very village-scale calendar of fairs, carnival, bonfires and cow contests, plus a handful of festivals that fill Vaduz or Schaan for a few days a year. On this page I only list dates the organisers have published themselves, because announcements come late here and it’s easy to stumble on calendars full of stale information.

Autumn, the season of fairs

What’s coming up next is my favourite part of the year. The Vaduz fair, the Jahrmarkt, takes over the centre from 2 to 4 October 2026, with stalls, rides and the traditional cattle show in the Aubündt. The organisers say the funfair opens on the Friday at 17:00 with the first 20 minutes’ rides free, and the town band plays on the Sunday morning. The following weekend, 9 to 11 October, it’s the turn of the Eschen fair, the Unterland’s version, which also coincides with its own cattle show. If you can only make one, I’d pick Vaduz for the setting under the castle.

The fairs coincide with the end of the alpine cattle drive, when the cows come down from the summer pastures and the country’s prettiest are crowned. Saturday 3 October 2026 is also the Long Night of Museums, which the Kunstraum Engländerbau in Vaduz has in its programme from 18:00.

What’s on at Christmas?

In winter, Vaduz takes centre stage. Vaduz on Ice sets up its skating rink on the Rathausplatz from Friday 6 November until Sunday 10 January, ringed by food and drink stalls. From 27 November the Weihnachts-Städtle turns the pedestrian street into a Christmas trail with stops for all ages, and the capital’s Christmas market is billed for the weekend of 12 and 13 December. Up in Malbun, the 2026-27 ski season starts on 19 December and wraps up on the first Sunday of April. For skiers, the resort also advertises the Stöckli Skitest on 20 and 21 February 2027.

February, carnival and bonfires

February is the liveliest winter month. Carnival in Liechtenstein, the Fasnacht, fills the villages with parades, masked balls and brass-band concerts, and its big date is the international parade in Schaan. In 2026 the parades ran from 7 to 17 February. The weekend after comes Funken Sunday, when a pyre topped with a rag witch is burnt to see off the winter. The 2027 dates haven’t been published yet.

Summer, festivals and the national day

Summer is when the music happens. VaduzSoundz turns the capital into a stage in late July (22 to 25 July in 2026), FL1.LIFE returns to Schaan on 2 and 3 July 2027 and the LiGiTa guitar festival runs from 3 to 10 July 2027. The Filmfest has announced its next edition for August 2027, with no day fixed yet. You’ll find them side by side, with what each one offers, among the music festivals in Liechtenstein.

And the big day of the year arrives with the national day, every 15 August. The morning belongs to the state ceremony on the meadow below the castle, the afternoon to the food stalls and stage in the Städtle, and the night to illuminations on the mountainsides. It’s the one day of the year when the whole country seems to gather in the capital, and the one day I’d book accommodation months in advance. One important caveat for anyone reading older calendars, as there were no fireworks in 2026. The reason was the total ban on lighting fires in force at the time, which is why I’m wary of any website promising them every year.

How I’d use this calendar

If you’re travelling for an event, I’d book your bed as soon as you have the dates, especially for the national day and August weekends, which see the highest hotel occupancy of the year. For the smaller village events, such as Advent markets or bonfires, I’d check the municipality’s website a few weeks beforehand, as dates are confirmed late.

And if it suits, next September has a date that feels very local to me. The Liechtensteiner Winzerfest, the country’s winegrowers’ festival on the Rathausplatz in Vaduz, is already fixed for Saturday 18 September 2027.
