Liechtenstein entry requirements for British travellers

Liechtenstein isn’t in the EU, so plenty of British travellers assume it has its own entry rules. It doesn’t. It follows Schengen, and Switzerland runs its immigration and customs on its behalf. That makes things simpler than you’d think, as long as your passport passes two date tests that are easy to overlook.

No visa, and 90 days shared with Schengen

gov.uk is clear on the basics. You can travel visa-free to the Schengen area, Liechtenstein included, for a maximum of 90 days within any 180, whether as a tourist, visiting friends or family, or attending business meetings and events. Working there is a different matter with its own rules.

What people forget is that the 90 days are shared. Any time you’ve spent in France, Switzerland, Austria or elsewhere in Schengen in the previous 180 days counts towards the total, and gov.uk warns that overstaying can lead to a ban of up to three years. The two passport tests

Your passport has to have been issued within the last ten years on your arrival date, and it must stay valid for three months or more beyond your planned exit from Schengen. The expiry date doesn’t need to fall within ten years of the issue date.

Here’s where people get caught out. gov.uk points out that passports renewed before 1 October 2018 can carry an issue date more than ten years old. Such a passport can look valid yet fail the Schengen rule, and gov.uk says you’ll be refused entry without a valid travel document. I’d check both dates before booking.

EES, and why the stamp has gone

The EU’s Entry/Exit System began a phased launch on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational on 10 April 2026, replacing the old passport stamps. For a short stay you may be asked to register fingerprints and a photo, sometimes at a special booth the first time, and it’s free. Children aged 11 or under aren’t fingerprinted but may be photographed.

You won’t do this at the Liechtenstein border, because there isn’t one to speak of. It happens where you first enter Schengen, typically Zurich Airport, and gov.uk suggests allowing extra time both arriving and leaving. Your digital record then lasts three years. ETIAS isn’t here yet

You’ll see plenty of talk about ETIAS, the EU’s travel authorisation for visa-free visitors. According to the European Commission, it isn’t operating and no applications are being collected, and the EU will announce its start date several months in advance. When it does begin, the fee has been set at €20, up from the €7 first planned. Until then, any website asking you to pay for one is not the official system.

Staying longer, working or holding two passports

The 90-day rule is for short visits. gov.uk says that to stay longer you must meet the Liechtenstein government’s own entry requirements, and that working there follows different rules altogether. If you already hold a Liechtenstein residence permit or long-stay visa, that time doesn’t count towards the 90 days.

Dual nationals have one extra point to remember. gov.uk reminds British citizens that they need a valid British passport or a certificate of entitlement to return to the UK, whatever passport they used to travel. A stamp you’ll actually want

With EES there’s no entry stamp at all, but there is one worth having. The Liechtenstein Center, the tourist office in Vaduz, will add a decorative souvenir stamp to your passport for CHF 3 or €3.30, free with the All Inclusive Erlebnispass.
