What to do in Liechtenstein on a rainy day

Liechtenstein is mountain country and rain comes with the territory. The Office of Statistics puts annual rainfall at 900 to 1,200 mm in the valley and up to 1,900 in the Alps. The good news is that Vaduz has one of the best wet-weather plans I can think of for a small capital. Six museums a few hundred metres apart on the same street, two of them free, and a winery where you taste under cover. I’m almost glad when it rains. The museum mile, on foot and umbrella-free

The tourist board calls it the «Museumsmeile», six museums within a few hundred metres in the heart of Vaduz. I’d start at the Kunstmuseum, the black cube at Städtle 32, with modern and contemporary art, and the Hilti Art Foundation, joined on and covered by the same ticket. It costs CHF 15, CHF 10 reduced, and it’s free on Wednesdays. Hours are 10:00 to 17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, with Thursdays running to 20:00, and it’s shut on Mondays. In the afternoon, the national museum, the LandesMuseum, with the country’s history and archaeology, and the Treasure Chamber, the SchatzKammer, with the princely house’s treasures, Fabergé eggs and moon rocks. A combined ticket is CHF 13, and the audio guide is free in five languages, English among them. The national museum stays open until 20:00 on Wednesdays and closes on Mondays; the Treasure Chamber opens daily 10:00 to 17:00. My guide to museums in Liechtenstein puts them all in order.

Free options, for a Monday or a tight budget

If your wet day is a Monday, all is not lost. The PostMuseum, which holds every Liechtenstein stamp since 1912, opens daily 10:00 to 17:00 and charges nothing. The Kunstraum Engländerbau, in the same 1933 building, is a regional contemporary art space, open every day 13:00 to 17:00 and also free. Between them you’ve a good hour and a half without opening your wallet.

See the castle without the climb

Vaduz Castle is the Prince’s residence and isn’t open to visitors. The nearest you’ll get to its interior is a short film, «Fürstliche Momente», shown at the Altes Kino in Vaduz. Combined with the Citytrain it’s CHF 22 for adults and CHF 10 for children; with the ALL INCLUSIVE Adventure Pass the film is included. Wine, beer and warm water

The Prince’s winery, the Hofkellerei, runs tastings with a tour, starting 15:00 Monday to Friday and 14:00 on Saturday, about 90 minutes for CHF 19, no booking for up to six. Schaan’s Liechtensteiner Brauhaus opens its brewery to groups at 18:00 Wednesday to Friday and 16:00 on Saturdays, with a tasting, at a flat group price. And if you’re travelling with children or simply fancy a swim, the indoor pools in Triesen and Balzers cost CHF 6 and CHF 4 per adult, and Balzers keeps its water at 28 °C; hours and prices for all of them are in swimming pools in Liechtenstein. The Kunstmuseum and the national museum don’t charge under-16s, so a rainy family day works out better than you’d expect.

Theatre in the evening

If the rain carries on into the night, check what’s on at the TAK in Schaan, the country’s theatre since 1970, with drama, classical concerts, cabaret and children’s shows. Your ticket doubles as a return LIEmobil bus fare, and the box office takes euros. It’s all in my guide to the TAK theatre. My rainy day, hour by hour

At 10:00, the Kunstmuseum and Hilti Art Foundation. At midday, lunch in the museum café. At 14:00, the Treasure Chamber and the national museum. At 15:00, if you’ve timed it right, the tasting at the Prince’s winery, a stroll north of the centre.
