Can you rent Liechtenstein? The myth and what you can really book

“Rent Liechtenstein” is one of those searches that says a lot about how the country looks from outside. So small it seems you could book it like a holiday cottage. For years the story has done the rounds that you could hire the whole place for a party or a conference, complete with a nightly rate. I tried to confirm it and couldn’t, so here’s what I looked for, what I didn’t find and what you genuinely can book.

Can you rent the whole country?

I looked where it ought to be. The country’s official portal, liechtenstein.li, doesn’t mention it. Nor do the archived copies of the official tourist board’s website. In Airbnb’s newsroom, which is where one version is usually pinned, a search for “Liechtenstein” returns a single result, a 2019 piece about ski destinations. No government website mentions it.

On that basis I can’t tell you the offer exists or ever existed in the form people describe, and I won’t repeat the prices that get quoted. If a reliable source turns up, I’ll add it. Until then my answer is that there’s no documented official offer to rent Liechtenstein. How much fits into the country

One figure helps put the myth in perspective. According to the Office of Statistics, in 2024 Liechtenstein had 28 establishments counting hotels and private rooms, with 1,251 beds in total. They welcomed 96,670 arrivals, and the average stay was 1.9 nights. In other words, the entire country can put up just over 1,250 people in hotels at once, a number you can compare with your own town. In 1980 there were 64 establishments and 1,760 beds, so supply hasn’t grown, it has shrunk.

A castle for your event

The closest thing to renting a slice of the country with some history is Gutenberg Castle in Balzers. It doesn’t open daily. Its website explains that it opens only by arrangement, for events and visits, in the May-to-October season, and stays shut through the winter. The municipality asks for bookings at least 14 days ahead through the Trägerverein, the association that runs it.

Guided tours are by booking only, last about 75 minutes, take up to 20 people per guide and run in German, English or French. You walk up to the castle, and its website warns that it’s only partly suitable for people with limited mobility. The practical details are on my page about Gutenberg Castle.

Sleep in a house from 1494, or take over a hut

If what tempts you is having somewhere unique all to yourself, there are two real options I rate far above the headline. The first is the Hofstätte Hintergass 35/37 in Vaduz’s Oberdorf, a winegrower’s house from 1494 and one of the oldest farmhouses in the country. The municipality of Vaduz explains that it’s let as a holiday home through the Ferien im Baudenkmal foundation, which restores historic buildings for exactly this purpose. The foundation’s whole idea is that you live in the monument rather than just look at it, which is exactly the kind of stay I’d choose.

The second is up in the mountains. The Gafadurahütte, at 1,428 m above Planken, has 14 places in a single room. It’s booked by email only, paid for in cash only, in francs or euros, and has no winter room. What I’d suggest

Don’t waste energy on an offer I can’t confirm. If you’re travelling as a group, book the hut or the 1494 house well ahead. If you’re celebrating something, ask the Trägerverein about Gutenberg. And if you just want a special night in Vaduz, compare early, because with 1,251 beds in the whole country the good dates go quickly.
