Slovenia entry requirements: the quick answer

    Full read: 3 min

    • No visa for up to 90 days in any 180.
    • Passport issued under 10 years ago and valid 3 months beyond departure.
    • EES fingerprints and photo on first entry since April 2026.
    • Carry ID; hotels handle the police registration.
    What I would do

Before booking, I'd check the passport's issue date, not just the expiry, because that's the one that catches people out. And I'd carry the passport, or at least a copy, every day, because there are checks at several land borders and the police can ask for ID.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Getting there

      90 days in any 180

gov.uk says you can travel to Slovenia without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counting time spent in other Schengen countries.

    2. 02 My tip

      Check the issue date

The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive. If you renewed before 1 October 2018, it might be older than that and invalid for Schengen.

    3. 03 Money

      Police registration

You must register with the police within 3 days, but hotels and guest houses do it for you. In self-catering, check with your host; skipping it can mean a fine.

    4. 04 Watch out

      Always carry ID

gov.uk advises carrying a copy of your passport at all times and warns of a €50 to €200 fine if the police ask for ID and you can't show it.

    Step by step

    1. Check both passport dates

Issued less than 10 years before you arrive, and valid at least 3 months after you leave the Schengen area.

      10 years / 3 months

    2. Count your Schengen days

British visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.

      90 in 180

    3. Expect the EES at the border

Since 10 April 2026 the Entry/Exit System has been compulsory at Slovenia's external borders.

      Since 10 Apr 2026

    4. Carry ID every day

There are checks at several land borders, and the police can ask for identification.

    Passport validity

Slovenia follows Schengen rules, and gov.uk sets out two separate tests. The first is about age. Count back from your arrival date, and the issue date printed in the passport has to fall within the last ten years; a passport renewed before October 2018 can fail this test even if its expiry date looks fine. The second is about expiry, which must fall at least three months after your planned exit from the Schengen area. Both have to be met at once. You’ll be refused entry with a passport that’s invalid or has been reported lost or stolen.

    The Entry/Exit System

Since 10 April 2026 the EES has been compulsory for non-EU nationals at Slovenia’s five external Schengen crossings, according to the Tourist Board, the airports of Ljubljana, Maribor and Portorož and the ports of Koper and Piran. gov.uk explains that it replaces passport stamping with a digital record of your fingerprints and photo. It’s free and there’s nothing to arrange beforehand, but the first time through you may be directed to a dedicated kiosk before passport control, and queues can be longer, so leave a margin both on arrival and on departure; if you’re flying out, gov.uk says checks may happen before boarding. Children of 11 and younger may be photographed but have no fingerprints scanned, and once you’re in the system the record lasts for three years. If you start the trip through Dover, the Eurotunnel at Folkestone or Eurostar at St Pancras, the registration is done there, before you leave the UK.

    The 90-day rule

You don’t need a visa as long as your days in the Schengen area stay at or below 90 in each 180, whether you come as a tourist, to visit family or friends, or for business meetings and short courses. Days spent in other Schengen countries in the previous 180 days count towards those 90, so check the whole trip if you’re combining Slovenia with Italy, Austria or Croatia. Overstaying can mean an on-the-spot fine, confiscation of documents or assets until you pay, and a ban of up to 3 years. At border control you may be asked for a return or onward ticket and proof that you have enough money for your stay.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ljubljana before prices climb.

    Land border checks

gov.uk says there are checks at Slovenia’s land borders with Italy and Austria, and that if you’re coming from Croatia or Hungary you should only use crossings open to all passengers. The Slovenian Tourist Board, for its part, mentions temporary controls with Croatia and Hungary and Austrian controls on its side of the border. The two sources don’t list the same borders, so assume there may be a check anywhere, allow extra time and keep your passport handy. Checks may include vehicle inspections. Combining with Croatia is covered in Slovenia and Croatia. If you haven’t sorted out your route yet, start with how to get to Slovenia.

    Police registration and ID

You must register with the police within 3 days of arrival, but any registered hotel or guest house does it for you. In self-catering accommodation, or staying with friends or family, check the arrangements with your agent or host, because failing to register can mean a fine. gov.uk also advises carrying a copy of your passport at all times; if the police ask for ID and you can’t show it, the fine is €50 to €200. If your passport is lost or stolen, call the police on 113; emergency numbers and safety advice are in is Slovenia safe.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Ljubljana and choose by the reviews.

    Driving, health and customs

Your UK licence is valid in Slovenia, though hire companies may set stricter requirements; what to know before getting behind the wheel is in driving in Slovenia, including the compulsory kit you need in the car. For healthcare you’ll want a GHIC or EHIC plus travel insurance, as I explain in healthcare in Slovenia. And what you can bring in and take home is in Slovenia customs rules.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ljubljana before prices climb.
