Šentjur is a small town south-east of Celje, on the Voglajna, with 5,107 people and 19,757 in its municipality on 1 January 2026, according to SURS. What to see: Zgornji trg square and the house of the Ipavec family of musicians; Rifnik hill, with a large late antique settlement; and the museum of the Southern Railway, which arrived 180 years ago.

    How I would do it

I'd do Šentjur in a morning on the way somewhere else. Zgornji trg and the Ipavec house first, then the climb to Rifnik, and the railway museum only if you have children or love trains; in the afternoon, move on to Celje or Rogaška Slatina.

    My checklist before setting off

The essentials in a few lines

    Full read: 2 min

    • A town of 5,107 south-east of Celje.
    • House museum of the Ipavec composers, with a Plečnik garden.
    • The late antique Rifnik archaeological park.
    • Southern Railway Museum, 180 years of the line in 2026.

    What I would book

    My key points

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

A Plečnik pavilion in the garden

Behind the Ipavec house, a centuries-old linden shades a stone pavilion designed by Jože Plečnik, and the garden hosts concerts, according to the tourist board.

    2. 02 Worth the splurge

      Climb the Resevna tower

On top of Resevna, at 682 m, there's a 20 m lookout tower, a renovated mountain lodge and a wooden swing hanging from thick branches.

    3. 03 My tip

      Over 600 finds from Rifnik

Before climbing to the site, see the Rifnik and Its Treasures collection in Zgornji trg, with more than 600 objects found on the hill.

    4. 04 Getting there

      A short hop from Celje

Šentjur lies south-east of Celje, the town of the counts, and the two combine easily in a day.

      Celje

Zgornji trg and the Ipavec house

Zgornji trg, the old market square, is the heart of town. Here stands the Ipavec House, home to a family of doctors and composers who shaped Slovenian music. The exhibition shows bourgeois interiors, instruments, manuscripts and personal belongings from a cultural life the tourist board compares to that of Vienna. Behind it, in the garden, a centuries-old linden shades a stone pavilion by Jože Plečnik, and the garden still hosts concerts.

On the same square is the Rifnik and Its Treasures collection, with more than 600 objects from the site, a room dedicated to the New Swing Quartet, which started out in Šentjur, a gallery and a school building from 1908.

    Rifnik hill

Rifnik rises to 568 m and has been inhabited since the Stone Age. On top is an archaeological park on what the tourist board describes as Slovenia’s largest late antique settlement. The path passes Rifnik Castle, first recorded in 1326. The other hill, Resevna, at 682 m, has a 20 m lookout tower, a mountain lodge and a wooden swing. A legend links the two through a stone bridge and a forbidden romance between the Countess of Ploštanj and a knight from Rifnik.

    Trains and pottery

On 2 June 2026 it was 180 years since the first railway line on present-day Slovenian soil, between Graz and Celje, which transformed Šentjur. The Southern Railway Museum shows communication and signalling equipment, with a steam locomotive outside. The municipality is also home to potters such as Marija Gračner in Osredek and Živa Zupanc Buser in Ponikva, who carries on her family’s tradition of distinctive clay products, runs group workshops and keeps a permanent collection of Valentin Buser’s pottery.

    A morning in Šentjur

Half a day comfortably covers the square, the hill and the museum, and a full day lets you add Resevna and a pottery workshop. I’d pair it with a visit to Celje or with Rogaška Slatina, in the same direction.

    Šentjur on the Voglajna

According to SURS, Šentjur has 5,107 residents and its municipality 19,757 on 1 January 2026, across 108 settlements, making it one of the largest municipalities in Savinjska. It recorded 3,409 arrivals in 2025. The tourist board places it on the River Voglajna among rolling hills and notes its membership of the Association of Historical Towns of Slovenia. Around it lie Slivnica Lake and countryside with trails for walking, cycling and fishing, and tourist farms serving local food.
