The snow-covered ski jumping and ski flying hills of Planica at the head of the valley, among mountain forests

Slovenia in March sits between winter and spring. Skiing carries on in the mountains and Planica holds its ski flying from 18 to 21 March 2027; lower down, the average climbs to 6.8°C in Ljubljana and 8.5°C at Portorož. Winter equipment stops being compulsory on the 15th and the clocks go forward on the last Sunday.

The essentials in a few lines

    Full read: 2 min

    • Planica from 18 to 21 March 2027.
    • A 6.8°C average in Ljubljana and 8.5°C at Portorož.
    • The winter equipment period ends on 15 March.
    • Clocks go forward on 28 March 2027.
    When I would go

March is when I'd combine things that don't go together the rest of the year, a final week of skiing at Kranjska Gora or Kanin and a few days in the sun at Piran. If you like sport, Planica rounds the trip off.

    On the calendar

    Slovenia in March: the calendar

    1. Planica 2027

      Planica

    My key points

Before you go to Slovenia, this

    1. 01 Worth the splurge

      Ski flying at Planica

From Thursday 18 to Sunday 21 March 2027, the Gorišek brothers' hill hosts the ski flying finale, with women flying it for only the second time. Tickets went on sale on 7 October 2026.

      Planica
    2. 02 Most beautiful

      Kanin, snow into spring

The Tourist Board says Kanin, above Bovec and the highest resort in the country, offers skiing on natural snow well into spring. It's my pick for late-season skiing.

      Kanin ski resort
    3. 03 Getting there

The 15th, end of winter equipment

The compulsory winter equipment period the FCDO gives ends on 15 March, though the rule still applies on any day with snow or ice. In the mountains, I'd keep carrying it.

Planica in March, the big weekend

Planica’s official website sets the 2027 edition between Thursday 18 and Sunday 21 March. Thursday is given over to qualifying and the rounds run from Friday to Sunday, on the Gorišek brothers’ flying hill. The headline is that, for only the second time ever, women will fly there too. Tickets went on sale on 7 October 2026. The Planica valley is closed to traffic, according to the Tourist Board, so the sensible thing is to stay in or around Kranjska Gora. Outside competition weekends, the Tourist Board also mentions a zipline down the flying hill, which it calls the steepest in the world. The place itself is covered in Planica.

Can you still ski in March?

At the resorts, March is still in season, with a 1.9°C average at Rateče and -6°C up at Kredarica. If you want to stretch the snow, the Tourist Board picks out Kanin, above Bovec, as the highest resort in the country and the one where natural snow lasts well into spring. I haven’t seen closing dates for the 2026-27 season, so I’d check each resort’s website before booking. The resorts are compared in skiing in Slovenia.

March weather in town and on the coast

In town the average rises to 6.8°C in Ljubljana and 6.4°C in Maribor, and on the coast to 8.5°C at Portorož, which with little rain (64 mm) is the nicest corner of the country this month. In Ljubljana, the Young Virtuosi concerts carry on in the Knights’ Hall at Križanke on Thursdays 4 and 11 March. For me, a few days in Piran at the end of March, without the summer crowds, is a smart move, as I explain in Piran.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Kranjska Gora before prices climb.

15 and 28 March, two dates to note

15 March marks the end of the period in which the FCDO places compulsory winter equipment, though the rule still applies on any day with snow or ice, and in the mountains I’d keep carrying it. On Sunday 28 March 2027 the clocks go forward, under the Directive 2000/84/EC rule applied across the EU; that date is my own calculation, and it matches the UK. I won’t give Easter 2027 dates until the government publishes its calendar. The return of the long season, with Vintgar and summer opening hours, comes in Slovenia in April. If you’re torn between the three spring months, I compare them in Slovenia in spring.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Kranjska Gora and choose by the reviews.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Kranjska Gora before prices climb.
