Lake Planšar, the watery heart of the Jezersko valley

    Winter
    2,000 m² ice rink alongside

The lake at Jezersko is Lake Planšar (Planšarsko jezero), a small heart-shaped artificial lake in Zgornje Jezersko made by local people in memory of the large glacial lake that gave the valley its name. It's about 2 m deep, with boats in summer, a 2,000 m² ice rink beside it in winter and a restaurant open all year, with the Kamnik Alps behind.

    What I would do

Lake Planšar doesn't need a whole day, but I'd start and finish any outing in Jezersko here. The track up to the Češka koča hut begins at the lake, and on the way back it's good to sit on the shore with the Grintovec walls mirrored in the water.

Who I would recommend it to

    Yes, if…

    • Walkers starting out for the Češka koča hut
    • Families wanting an easy, accessible stop
    • Winter visitors who skate

    Better not, if…

    • Anyone expecting a big lake like Bled or Bohinj
    • Visitors after a long swim

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

A lake made in memory of another

Jezersko roughly means the place of the lake. The glacial lake that gave it the name drained away long ago, and local people made this small heart-shaped one to remember it.

    2. 02 To save money

      Cheap skating

Next to the lake there's a 2,000 m² ice rink, open daily from 9:00 to 16:00 when winter allows. Entry was €3 and skate hire €3 an hour, at weekends.

    3. 03 My tip

      Small trout, fishing by permit

Small brown trout live in the lake and in winter, under the ice, move up the stream. Fly fishing and spinning are allowed, with a permit bought online.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Gateway to the Kamnik Alps

Round the lake starts the track to the goods cableway car park, from where it's an hour and a quarter up to the Češka koča hut below the Grintovec.

Jezersko’s lake, in memory of another

Jezersko takes its name from a large glacial lake that once filled the valley and drained away some 500 years ago after a big earthquake, according to the Jezersko Tourist Board. The local people wanted to remember it, so they dammed the Jezernica stream at the end of the Ravenska Kočna valley, and this heart-shaped lake was the result. It’s the only lake of any size in the municipality. It’s about two metres deep at most, and small brown trout live in it, moving up the stream in winter when ice covers the surface.

    Getting to Lake Planšar

Take the road up the Kokra valley towards the Jezerski vrh border crossing and follow the signposted turn-off. I’d use it as a starting point, because going round it towards the Ancel farm you pick up the track to the goods cableway car park and the climb to the Češka koča hut.

If you’re not heading up into the mountains, the lake pairs nicely with a short tour of the valley floor. A few minutes’ drive away are the Šenk farm, with the year 1517 carved over its door, the old Jenkova kasarna inn, now an ethnographic museum, and the Jezerska slatina mineral water spring. Add lunch on the shore and you have a relaxed morning with no queues and no rush. In winter, swap the walk for an hour on the ice and a hot drink by the rink.

    The lake in summer

In summer it’s a gentle plan, a walk round the lake, a boat, a table outside the restaurant on the shore, which is open all year. Behind you rise the walls of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, and they’re what makes the picture. Access is designed for people with reduced mobility too. In July, August and September 2026 there were also free workshops on trout farming, with a demonstration by the lake and a meal, as part of a European project.

In winter: ice rink and hockey

When it freezes, life moves to the 2,000 m² ice rink beside the lake. It opens daily from nine to four if the weather plays along, with skate hire at weekends, and groups can book night skating in advance. Every winter an ice hockey match is played there in memory of Jože Tepina-Rus, a local player who died young.

    Fishing on the lake

If you bring a rod, fly fishing and spinning are allowed on the lake, while lower down the Kokra it’s artificial fly only, always with a permit. The guide to fly fishing in Slovenia explains how permits and beats work.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Lake Planšar and pick one that fits your day.
