    Distance to Ljubljana
    About 50 km

Bled is the busiest resort in the Julian Alps: 5,155 residents and 499,659 tourist arrivals in 2025, third in Slovenia after Ljubljana and Piran (SURS). People come for the glacial lake with the country's only natural island, the castle first recorded in 1011 and Vintgar Gorge a few kilometres away. It's about 50 km from Ljubljana, and the walk round the lake is 6 km.

    How I would do it

Bled is spoilt by rushing it. I'd stay at least one night, walk round the lake early before the day-trip coaches arrive, and save the castle for late afternoon, with the light on the water.

    My key points

Before you go to Bled, this

    1. 01 Most beautiful

The island church, seen from the water

Bled Island is Slovenia's only natural island. You reach it by pletna, the traditional rowing boat, then climb 99 steps to the Church of the Mother of God.

      Bled Island
    2. 02 Worth the splurge

Lunch or dinner at the castle

The castle restaurant, run by the Jezeršek company, is open daily from 12:00 to 22:00. Paying for that view from the rock is, to my mind, money well spent.

      Bled Castle
    3. 03 To save money

      A free shuttle to Vintgar

The Bled tourist board runs a free shuttle to the entrance of Vintgar Gorge and a free summer bus round the lake and its surroundings, the Bled Bus.

      Vintgar Gorge
    4. 04 My tip

The postcard shot is earned uphill

The classic view of lake, island and castle is taken from Ojstrica and Mala Osojnica, two hills above the west shore, 20 to 30 minutes on foot from Velika Zaka.

      Ojstrica viewpoint
    5. 05 Getting there

      Radovljica is 8 km away

Radovljica is 8 km away, linked to Bled in July and August by a free shuttle, says the Slovenian Tourist Board. Kranjska Gora is about 40 km.

      Radovljica

Why half a million visitors come

The town sits on the edge of Triglav National Park, in the statistical region of Gorenjska, or Upper Carniola. Everything revolves round Lake Bled, a glacial lake with thermal springs on its eastern shore and an island in the middle, the only natural one in Slovenia. On a rock above the northern shore stands the castle, documented as early as 1011 and described by the tourist board as the oldest in the country.

Its reputation goes back a long way. In the mid-19th century the Swiss healer Arnold Rikli set up his natural cure institute here, with air, sun and water baths, and drew guests from across Europe. The villas followed. The local tourist board counts 135 built in the 19th and 20th centuries, some with their own parks and boathouses. The oldest, Vila Zora, dates from 1853 and now houses the town hall. The grandest is Vila Bled, once Tito’s summer residence and now a hotel.

How long to spend in Bled

One day covers the basics, but I’d give it two nights if you can. Spend the first on the town itself, with the 6 km flat walk round the lake and the boat to the island in the morning and the castle and its museum in the afternoon. On the second, I’d do Vintgar Gorge in the morning and climb to a viewpoint later on.

With a single day, the order that saves most time is island first, as it gets busy by mid-morning, and castle last, since it stays open until 20:00 from April to October. Castle and island have separate tickets, and the prices are in the table.

Things to do in Bled: island, castle and viewpoints

There’s no time limit on Bled Island. Ninety-nine stone steps lead up to the Church of the Mother of God, there’s a wishing bell everyone rings and a bell tower of more than 50 metres you can climb. The island also has the Potičnica, where they bake potica, the Slovenian rolled nut cake.

The castle has a museum on the history of Bled, a printing workshop where you can print your own certificate, a cellar where you bottle wine yourself and a restaurant with a view. From the terrace you see the whole lake and, on clear days, much of Gorenjska.

For the postcard shot you have to climb. Ojstrica, at 611 m, takes about 20 minutes from Velika Zaka on the west shore. Mala Osojnica, a little higher, means about 45 minutes uphill. For something gentler, Straža, at 646 m, has a chairlift and, in summer, a 520 m toboggan run.

    Vintgar and around

Vintgar Gorge lies in the neighbouring municipality of Gorje. It’s 1.6 km of wooden walkways above the Radovna river between sheer walls, ending at the 13 m Šum waterfall. It opens from April to October, needs a digital pass with a time slot, and the Bled tourist board runs a free shuttle to the entrance.

Bled also makes a good base. Bohinj, with its larger and wilder lake, lies to the west; Radovljica, with its medieval centre, is 8 km away; Kranjska Gora about 40. For the rest of the region, see Gorenjska.

    Eating, sleeping and getting around

The local sweet is kremšnita, Bled cream cake, made at the Hotel Park café since 1953. There are restaurants cooking Gorenjska food, an 18th-century farmhouse turned wine cellar and a beach restaurant below the castle that opens from spring to autumn.

Accommodation runs from the campsite on the west shore to historic hotels on the waterfront. Boats on the water are rowed or electric, and on land you get about on foot, by bike, on the free summer bus or by fijaker, the traditional horse-drawn carriage. When the lake freezes in a hard winter people skate on it, entirely at their own risk.

Bled at Christmas and in summer

The 2026-2027 Winter Fairytale runs from 27 November until 10 January, filling the lakeside promenade and the Spa Park with lights, concerts and stalls. In summer the big night is Lights on the Lake, when more than 10,000 candles set in eggshells drift across the water. In both seasons my advice is the same, book early, because Bled fills up well before the villages around it. If you’re coming from the capital, Ljubljana to Bled compares the bus and the car.

    True or false?

    0/3 Pick before you peek.

    1. Bled Island is the only natural island in Slovenia.

True. That's what the Slovenian Tourist Board says. You reach it by pletna, by hired rowing boat or on the electric boat line.

    2. Petrol motorboats are allowed on Lake Bled.

      See the answer

False. Only rowing boats and electric boats are allowed on the lake, a rule meant to protect the quiet and the environment.

    3. Bled is the most visited municipality in Slovenia.

      See the answer

False. It came third for arrivals in 2025, with 499,659, behind Ljubljana and Piran, according to SURS.

    Common questions about Bled

What is there to see in Bled?

The essentials are the lake and its island, reached by pletna boat, the castle on its rock, the Ojstrica viewpoint and Vintgar Gorge just outside town. That fills a long day nicely.

Is Bled worth an overnight stay?

I think so. Early in the morning and at dusk the lake is quiet, and from Bled you also have Bohinj, Radovljica and Vintgar close by for the following days.

How far is Bled from Ljubljana?

About 50 km, according to the Slovenian Tourist Board. You can drive up the Gorenjska motorway, for which you need a vignette, or take the intercity bus, one of the easy bus trips the tourist board suggests.

Is Bled a town or a village?

It's a small town of 5,155 people at the head of a municipality of 8,103, according to SURS on 1 January 2026. It receives almost half a million arrivals a year, which is why it feels much bigger in summer.

What's on in Bled at Christmas?

From 27 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 the Winter Fairytale runs along the lakeside promenade and through the Spa Park, with lights, concerts and stalls, according to the local tourist board.

Can you walk round Lake Bled?

Yes. The path round the lake is 6 km and flat, so allow around two hours with stops. You can also do it by bike, in the free summer bus or in a fijaker, the traditional horse-drawn carriage.
