Terme Olimia, pools for every age by the Sotla

    Facts checked on

Terme Olimia is the big thermal resort at Podčetrtek, by the Sotla, and it works like several spas in one: Aqualuna, the summer thermal park; Termalija, the indoor family zone, with the Vilinia hotel; and Wellness Orhidelia, for over-15s only, which the tourist board calls Slovenia's top wellness centre eight years running. There are hotels and glamping too.

    My view
    Sergio Lepone

At Terme Olimia the key is choosing the right zone. With young children, Vilinia and Termalija; as a couple, Orhidelia; in summer, at least a day at Aqualuna. I'd check online what each ticket includes before booking, because not all of them cover everything.

    My checklist before setting off

    My key points

Before you go to Podčetrtek, this

    1. 01 Worth the splurge

      The King Cobra

On Aqualuna's big slide tower you'll find the King Cobra, which the tourist board calls the wildest slide in Slovenia, alongside seven other large slides.

    2. 02 Most beautiful

      An underwater sound cave

Wellness Orhidelia has infinity pools, a sound cave where music travels underwater and rest areas with Himalayan singing bowls.

    3. 03 My tip

      A rainy-day plan

If it rains, Termalija Family Fun has mini slides, water cannons, a climbing wall in the pool, the Oliland playroom and a 7D cinema.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Old pharmacy and chocolate

From the resort you can cycle to Olimje, with its monastery, 17th-century pharmacy and chocolate shop, or climb to the Tower of Health and Joy on Rudnica.

    What I would book

    Which zone to choose

I’d decide first who I’m travelling with. With children, Vilinia and Termalija; as a couple, Orhidelia or the glamping; in summer, at least a day at Aqualuna. Prices and hours vary by season and area, so check them online before you go and book ahead in high season. To compare with other spas in Slovenia, Rogaška Slatina is close by and completely different in style.

    The resort’s zones

The resort, in Podčetrtek, belongs to the Olimia group, which also runs Terme Tuhelj in Croatia. It’s split into areas for different kinds of guest, each tied to its hotels. According to the tourist board, the four-star superior Hotel Sotelia is moving towards adults, the Breza houses the health side and the new Vilinia family hotel connects to the family zone.

    Aqualuna and Termalija, for families

Aqualuna is the summer thermal park. It has relaxation, children’s and wave pools, and on the lawns the Aqua Safari, with life-size animal sculptures. The big slide tower brings together the King Cobra, which the tourist board calls Slovenia’s wildest, and seven other large slides.

For rainy days, or the rest of the year, there’s Termalija Family Fun, with mini slides, water cannons, a climbing wall in the pool, the Oliland playroom and a 7D cinema. Next to it is the Vilinia family hotel, with 146 family rooms, over 700 m² of playrooms and a 9 m climbing net, plus a corridor straight to the pools.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Podčetrtek on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    Orhidelia and Vodian, for relaxing

Wellness Orhidelia, which the tourist board names Slovenia’s top wellness centre eight years running, doesn’t admit under-15s. It has infinity pools, a sound cave where music carries underwater and rest areas with Himalayan bowls and crystal lyres. At Hotel Breza, Wellness Vodian adds 2,000 m² with a 25 m pool, massage pools, Finnish, steam and infrared saunas and a rooftop herb garden. Couples also have Spa Armonia, which looks after beauty treatments as well as relaxation.

    Hotels, glamping and bikes

Accommodation runs from three to five stars, according to the tourist board. Besides the hotels there are Ortenia eco-apartments and Glamping Olimia, with luxury tents beside a small stream under the pines where you can even take a dip. The resort rents out bikes for exploring Obsotelje and Kozjansko, visiting Olimje or climbing to the Tower of Health and Joy on Rudnica.
