The small fishing harbour at Izola with moored boats, cars on the quay and colourful houses under a cloudy sky

Slovenia's beaches, from Ankaran to Portorož, and the lakes for a dip

Slovenia's beaches are spread along 47 km of coast, from Cape Debeli rtič to Seča, most of them flying the Blue Flag. My favourite is Moon Bay below the Strunjan cliff; with children, Izola, with eight beaches in 5 km; for a buzz, Portorož's central beach; and for nature, Ankaran and Debeli rtič up north.

    What I would do

I wouldn't come to Slovenia for the beaches, but I wouldn't leave without a swim either. With one beach day, I'd spend it at Moon Bay in Strunjan; with children or a dog, in Izola.

    Yes, if…

    • Families, especially in Izola
    • Anyone after a swim between Piran and Koper
    • Travellers with a dog, who have room in Izola

    Better not, if…

    • Anyone expecting long sandy beaches
    • Travellers planning a pure beach holiday

    My ranking, scored

The Slovenian beaches I would choose

My own marks out of 10, weighing the setting, how pleasant the swimming is and who each beach suits. Opinion, not an official rating.

    1. Moon Bay (Strunjan)

Below the tallest flysch cliff on the eastern Adriatic, inside a landscape park. The most natural spot on the coast.

      9.0 out of 10

    2. Izola's beaches

Eight beaches in 5 km, from the lighthouse to Simon's Bay and its archaeological park, with accessible and dog-friendly options.

      8.6 out of 10

    3. Portorož central beach

The liveliest and best equipped, next to the promenade, the hotels and the Blue Flag marina.

      8.2 out of 10

    4. Debeli rtič (Ankaran)

A protected headland with Mediterranean plants and good diving, served by a free bus in summer.

      8.0 out of 10

    5. Žusterna (Koper)

Built for families and water sports, accessible for disabled visitors and a short stroll from central Koper.

      7.4 out of 10

    6. Fiesa (Piran)

Two freshwater lakes right beside the sea, an oddity on such a short coastline.

      7.2 out of 10

    The practical bit

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

Moon Bay, below the Strunjan cliff

Strunjan Landscape Park has the highest cliff on the eastern Adriatic, made of flysch, with Moon Bay at its foot. It is the most natural beach on the coast and, says the tourist board, the easiest to reach by paddleboard.

      Strunjan
    2. 02 To save money

A free beach bus in Ankaran

In summer a free bus links all of Ankaran's beaches, from Camp Adria to Debeli rtič and St Bartholomew's Bay, which saves on parking.

      Ankaran
    3. 03 My tip

Izola has dog-friendly and accessible beaches

The tourist board lists beaches suited to people with reduced mobility and others where dogs are welcome among Izola's eight beaches along 5 km of shoreline.

      Izola
    4. 04 Getting there

Koper, a beach in the middle of town

Mokra Mačka, Koper's city beach, sits on the central waterfront, and Žusterna, next to a seaside park, is the family favourite and accessible for wheelchair users.

    5. 05 Getting there

      Summer on the coast

In July and August the coast is packed. In my summer guide I explain what else opens across the country and how to spread your trip to beat the crowds.

      Slovenia in summer

Which beach is best with children?

Izola, for me. It has eight beaches along 5 km, from the lighthouse beach in town to Simon’s Bay, with an archaeological park next to it, and the White Rocks. Some are adapted for wheelchair users and some welcome dogs, and the town has kept its fishing harbour and character.

Izola is also the best stretch to see from the water. The tourist board suggests paddling a SUP from White Rocks past Simon’s Bay and the lighthouse, taking in all eight beaches, or sailing out to White Rocks at sunset for a swim. And the Parenzana cycle path, on the old Trieste to Poreč railway, passes the lighthouse beach, handy if you are covering the coast by bike.

In Koper, Žusterna beach is designed for families and water sports and is accessible for disabled visitors, beside a new seaside park between the mouth of the Badaševica and Žusterna. For a dip right in town, Mokra Mačka is on the central waterfront.

Moon Bay below the Strunjan cliff

Strunjan Landscape Park has the highest cliff on the eastern Adriatic, a wall of flysch that the tourist board puts at about 80 m, and below it lies Moon Bay. There is no promenade and no hotel overhead, which is why it feels like a proper natural beach. The tourist board says it is the easiest spot to reach by paddleboard, setting off from Piran.

Portorož, the beach with a buzz

The central beach at Portorož is the liveliest in the country, with sand, hotels, a marina and seaside clubs. The tourist board notes that most bathing areas and the Portorož marina receive the Blue Flag every year. Next door, Fiesa has a curiosity of its own, two freshwater lakes a few metres from the sea.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Portorož on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Ankaran and Debeli rtič, up north

Ankaran is the first stretch of coast after the Italian border. You can swim at Camp Adria, at Študent beach with its music and younger crowd, at Valdoltra and in St Bartholomew’s Bay, where the remains of a Roman villa survive. At Debeli rtič, a protected headland with Mediterranean plants, divers find a varied seabed. In summer a free bus connects all of these beaches.

    If your route stays inland

If your route stays inland, there is still water. Lake Jasna in Kranjska Gora is open for swimming in summer, Lake Velenje has a beach and the Kolpa is, says the tourist board, the warmest river in the country. At Bled, the shore by the Grand Hotel Toplice uses the lake’s thermal water. The coast runs for 47 km, according to the Government, a small figure that makes more sense alongside the size of Slovenia.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Portorož and pick one that fits your day.

    Test yourself

    True or false?

    0/3 Pick before you peek.

    1. Izola has eight beaches along roughly 5 km of coast.

      See the answer

True. That is the tourist board's count, including the lighthouse beach, Simon's Bay and spots with accessible or dog-friendly access.

    2. Slovenia's coastline is more than 100 km long.

      See the answer

False. The government gives 47 km. It is one of the shortest coastlines in Europe, squeezed between Italy and Croatia.

    3. Fiesa, near Piran, has freshwater lakes right by the sea.

      See the answer

True. The tourist board mentions two freshwater lakes at Fiesa, next to the bathing areas of Piran and Portorož.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does Slovenia have beaches?

Yes, along 47 km of Adriatic coast between Ankaran and Portorož. They are short, many of them urban, well looked after, and most fly the Blue Flag every year, according to the tourist board.

What is the best beach in Slovenia?

For me, Moon Bay below the Strunjan cliff, for its natural setting. For facilities and atmosphere, Portorož central beach; with children, Izola or Žusterna in Koper.

Are there sandy beaches in Slovenia?

A few. The tourist board mentions sandy beaches in Portorož, the most developed stretch for playing by the water. Elsewhere the coast mixes town bathing areas with natural spots such as Strunjan and Debeli rtič.

How many beaches does Izola have?

Eight along 5 km of shore, from the lighthouse in town to Simon's Bay, with its archaeological park, and White Rocks. Some are adapted for wheelchair users and some welcome dogs.

Where can I swim in Slovenia away from the sea?

Lake Jasna in summer, the beach at Lake Velenje and the Kolpa, the warmest river in the country. At Bled, the shore by the Grand Hotel Toplice is fed by the lake's thermal water.

Is the Slovenian coast worth it for a beach holiday?

As part of a wider trip, yes. As a pure beach holiday the coast is short, so I would pair a few days on it with Piran, the salt pans and the Karst.
