The Ljubljanica, Ljubljana's backbone from Trnovo to the Dragon Bridge

- Plečnik's embankments and bridges (2021)
You can do the Ljubljanica on foot along its embankments, from Trnovo to the lock, World Heritage since 2021 as Plečnik's work, or on a boat trip of about 45 minutes that heads up to Špica and turns at Livada. The river rises from karst springs near Vrhnika, crosses the marshes and Ljubljana and joins the Sava at Podgrad, and its whole course is Natura 2000.
For me it makes more sense on foot than from a boat. I'd walk the whole embankment from Trnovo to the Dragon Bridge, stopping at the Triple Bridge and the market, and save the boat for late afternoon, when the light drops and the terraces fill up.

Is Ljubljanica river worth visiting?
It depends
It depends on your time. The 45-minute boat trip is a pleasant rest for tired legs, but walking the embankments shows you more of Plečnik's Ljubljana for nothing.
Who Ljubljanica river is for
Yes, if…
- Anyone with sore feet after a day's walking
- Families with small children
- Visitors who want the river at sunset
Better not, if…
- Travellers with only a couple of hours in town
- Anyone keen to see Plečnik's bridges up close
The practical bit

02 Worth the splurge
The 45-minute boat trip
The cruise sold by the bus station heads up to Špica and Livada and comes back through the old town to the Dragon Bridge. In autumn 2026 sales on that site were paused.

Kayak and paddleboard
The Tourist Board suggests seeing the centre by stand-up paddleboard or kayak. It is the calmest way to see the bridges from the water.

A protected river
The Ljubljanica's bed from its springs to Špica is a national cultural monument for its archaeological finds, and motor boating is regulated.
Bookings I would make
Is a Ljubljanica boat trip worth it?
That depends on your time. The trip sold by Ljubljana bus station lasts 45 minutes. It first heads upstream to Špica, where the river splits, turns at Livada, then on the way back passes the castle, some embassies, the renovated embankments, the Cobblers’ Bridge, the Franciscan church, the Triple Bridge and the market before turning at the Dragon Bridge. LPT maintains the port at Špica and eleven landing stages. In mid-October 2026 the bus station said the cruise would be back soon, so out of season it is worth checking.
For something more active, the Tourist Board suggests exploring the centre by stand-up paddleboard or kayak.
On foot, Trnovo to the Dragon Bridge
On foot first. Start in Trnovo, follow the embankments down to the Triple Bridge, carry on along the market colonnades and finish at the Dragon Bridge. At sunset, take the boat or sit at a terrace by the water. In December the lit-up river is transformed; more in Christmas in Ljubljana. As evening falls its banks fill with terraces, and I explain where to carry on in Ljubljana nightlife.
Plečnik’s embankments and the bridges
In the centre the river is something you stroll along. Since 2021 the embankments and bridges running from Trnovo to the lock have been on the World Heritage list together with Plečnik’s works in Ljubljana. Heading downstream you pass the Hradecky Bridge, cast iron from 1867, which Plečnik moved in 1931 and which was re-sited in 2011; the Cobblers’ Bridge, where cobblers set up in 1614; the Fish Footbridge; the Triple Bridge; the Butchers’ Bridge, opened in 2010; the Dragon Bridge from 1901; and the 36-metre Grain Footbridge, which widens in the middle into a little square for stopping to watch the water.
The banks are lined with promenades, bars and restaurants with terraces, according to the Tourist Board.

The river of seven names
The Ljubljanica rises in several karst springs near Vrhnika, crosses the Ljubljana Marshes, runs through the city and joins the Sava at Podgrad. It is called the river of seven names because, like any karst river, it disappears and resurfaces several times, and each stretch has its own. The Ministry of Culture notes that it was a transport route for centuries and has yielded a wealth of finds, including a Roman cargo boat from the 1st century AD that is still on the riverbed.
That is why its bed, from the springs to Špica, is protected as a national cultural monument, and the whole river lies within Natura 2000, which the Tourist Board points out is rare for a capital.
