Lake Bohinj from the top of Vogel, stretched out between wooded slopes and rock walls, with the Julian Alps peaks behind

Slovenia in spring runs from March's last snow (a 6.8°C average in Ljubljana and the Planica ski flying) to May's 16.6°C, with everything open. In April Vintgar Gorge reopens and Bled Castle lengthens its hours; in May and June Bohinj holds its wild flower festival. The high mountains stay wintry until May.

The essentials in a few lines

    Full read: 2 min

    • From 6.8°C in March to 16.6°C in May in Ljubljana.
    • In April Vintgar reopens and Bled Castle stays open later.
    • Bohinj holds its wild flower festival in May and June.
    • The high mountains stay in winter until May.
    When I would go

Anyone who hates crowds I'd send to Slovenia in spring, specifically late April or May. Open lakes, long evenings, and I'd save the high mountains for summer.

    The practical bit

What the official sites leave out

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Bohinj in bloom

Bohinj's International Wild Flower Festival is held every May and June; in 2026 its 20th edition ran from 22 May to 7 June, according to its website. The national park has more than a thousand plant species.

    2. 02 My tip

      April, when everything reopens

Vintgar Gorge starts its season in April and Bled Castle moves to an 8pm closing that month. If you travel in March, expect winter hours.

      Planica, winter's grand finale

Planica's 2027 ski flying runs from 18 to 21 March, with women flying the Gorišek brothers' hill for the second time, according to its official website.

      Slovenia in March

    March, spring with snow

In March the average in Ljubljana is 6.8°C according to official statistics for 2001 to 2010, and snow still rules the mountains. It’s Planica’s month, with the 2027 ski flying set for 18 to 21 March, and it’s when the legal winter equipment period for cars ends, on the 15th. Kanin, above Bovec, is the resort that holds on to natural snow longest. The month in detail is in Slovenia in March.

    April, when things reopen

April brings two changes you notice. Vintgar Gorge opens its season, which lasts until October, and Bled Castle starts closing at 8pm rather than 6pm. Ljubljana’s average rises to 11.3°C, though it rains, 105 mm, and the high mountains stay below freezing, at -3.2°C on Kredarica. Nothing opens on 27 April either, the national holiday that commemorates the uprising against the wartime occupation. For me the second half of April is the sweet spot, as I explain in Slovenia in April.

    May, the best of spring

In May the average reaches 16.6°C in Ljubljana and 17.5°C at Portorož, and Kredarica finally rises above zero. The 1st and 2nd are holidays, and the 20th is World Bee Day, linked to the Slovenian beekeeper Anton Janša. The lakes at Bled, Bohinj and Jasna are in season, with far fewer visitors than in July. It’s all in Slovenia in May.

    Bohinj’s wild flowers

If there’s one spring plan I find special, it’s this one. Bohinj’s International Wild Flower Festival is held every May and June across several of the valley’s 24 villages, with botanical walks, events and cooking with wild plants. 2026 was its 20th edition, from 22 May to 7 June, and the organisers point out that Triglav National Park is home to more than a thousand plant species. For 2027 you’ll need to wait for the valley to publish its programme. I find it a lovely way to experience Bohinj as more than a postcard lake. The valley is covered in Bohinj.

What I wouldn’t do in spring

Heading into the high mountains before late May without snow experience. The figures make it clear, and the valleys have plenty to offer. I also won’t give you the 2027 dates for Easter and Whitsun, which bring work-free days, because they weren’t on the official calendar I checked. When they’re out, it’s worth looking, because they affect how busy the weekends get.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Bohinj on GetYourGuide.
