Who Slovenian Alpine Museum is for
Yes, if…
- Hikers about to tackle Triglav or Vrata
- Families with children who like a challenge
- Anyone stuck in the Julian Alps on a rainy day
Better not, if…
- Visitors with no interest in mountains
- Anyone arriving between 1 and 17 November 2026
If you're going to climb Triglav or walk the Vrata valley, I'd stop here first, ideally on a rainy day. It helps you understand what you're about to see, and with children the escape bivouac makes it more than a museum.

What you see: an exhibition you climb like a mountain
The permanent exhibition is called “The Path is the Story, the Story is the Path”. It starts with the call of the mountains and the preparations, moves through the huts and ends with reaching the summits. Over eleven themed sections it covers the milestones of Slovenian mountaineering, alpinism and mountain rescue, and the reasons that have always drawn people uphill.
The route is marked with Knafelc trail markers and at each stage you collect a stamp, which children love. There are virtual views from 30 Slovenian summits, a replica of the inside of the legendary double bivouac below the Rokavi and, according to the Slovenian Tourist Board, a 210-million-year-old Birgeria fossil fish. If you’ve never climbed Mount Triglav, this is your chance without breaking a sweat.
The escape bivouac and workshops
If you want something more hands-on, try the escape room in the bivouac, with riddles, codes and mountain traps to solve before you can get out. In summer there are children’s workshops, and on the ground floor you’ll find the museum shop and a Triglav National Park information point, handy for asking about routes and conditions before you head out.
The museum also has a specialist library and a wealth of photographs and archive material. Tourism Kranjska Gora notes that it is the easternmost information point of the Alpine Convention, the international treaty protecting the mountain range.
Tickets, hours and getting there
Tickets and 2026 hours are in the tables. Bear in mind that after the daily season hours the museum in Mojstrana closes from 1 to 17 November 2026, and the timetable after that had not been published. The last admission is one hour before closing time. It’s run by the Gornjesavski muzej in Jesenice.
In summer an electric van ran a loop from outside the museum to the Peričnik waterfall, and the bus up the Vrata valley leaves from Mojstrana. If you’re driving, the large Na Prodih car park in Mojstrana is the one Tourism Kranjska Gora recommends for leaving the car and carrying on by bus or on foot.

Is the Alpine Museum worth it?
Yes, above all on a rainy day, and the Julian Alps get plenty of those. Allow an hour and a half to do it justice, and you come out understanding why Triglav is almost a national symbol and why so many Slovenian climbers came from the villages below it.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Slovenian Alpine Museum and pick one that fits your day.
