What to see in Mozirje, at the entrance to the Upper Savinja Valley: the Mozirski gaj flower park, opened in 1978 and lit up at Christmas, and next to it the 3,265 m Golte cable car, which climbs almost 1,000 m in eight minutes to a plateau at 1,410 m. The market town, recorded in 1146 and holding markets since 1318, has 2,321 people and its municipality 4,438.
I'd come to Mozirje with a plan to suit the season. From spring to autumn, the Golte cable car and an afternoon in the old market town; at Christmas, the illuminated Mozirski gaj, to my mind the valley's best winter sight. Take cash for the park's ticket desk.

02 Worth the splurge
Up to Golte in eight minutes
The Žekovec cable car is 3,265 m long and climbs almost 1,000 m to Hotel Montis at 1,410 m. Its operator calls it the longest cable car in Slovenia.

03 To save money
A shepherd's picnic for €25
The Mozirje tourist office hires out the cula, a tied bundle with salami, cheese, bread and an apple for two, for €25, to eat at one of the village viewpoints.

04 Getting there
The village next door
A short hop away, Rečica ob Savinji keeps a 16th-century pillory in its square and one of the valley's biggest campsites.

What I would book ahead
Things to do in Mozirje: Mozirski gaj
It’s a flower park and open-air ethnographic museum on the right bank of the Savinja. The park explains that in 1974 locals began clearing an old common pasture full of scrub and fly-tipping, and that it opened on 27 April 1978 with the Hortikultura 78 show, seen by 80,000 people. Today there are flower beds, themed gardens, an 18 m wooden viewing tower, a pond and a collection of rural buildings, with a granary, a forge, a bee house, a water mill and a Venetian sawmill. The tourist office also claims the largest tuned wind chimes in Europe.
Since 2016 it has also opened in winter for the Božična bajka. The 2026 edition is the eleventh, from 28 November to 10 January 2027, with two million lights. If you ask me, that’s the best time to come, because the valley has little else on in December. The park reckons 90 minutes to two hours to see it without rushing, and the ticket desk only takes cash.
Golte and its cable car
From Žekovec runs the cable car its operator bills as the longest in Slovenia, at 3,265 m, with an eight-minute ride and almost 1,000 m of height gain. At the top, at 1,410 m, there’s Hotel Montis and a plateau with an adventure park, walking and cycling trails and, in winter, ski runs. The Mozirje tourist office books tandem paragliding flights from Golte for €140.
A market town over eight centuries old
According to SURS, Mozirje has 2,321 residents and its municipality 4,438 on 1 January 2026, spread over eight settlements. It recorded 19,881 tourist arrivals in 2025. The local tourist office says the place appears in documents from 1146 and as a market town from 5 May 1318. In 1580 it burnt to the ground, charters and all, and in 1581 Archduke Charles granted it a new charter and the coat of arms it still uses. That charter confirmed the St George’s fair on 24 April, today the municipal holiday.
Two streams run through the village, the Mozirnica and the Trnava, and local lore says that anyone who washes once in the Trnava can never leave Mozirje. I’d take a stroll round the old market town, where the benches and doorways are carved from greenish volcanic tuff, and look into the library, which keeps the local museum collection of photos, documents and objects.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Mozirje for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Where to eat, sleep and getting about
The tourist office recommends Gostilna Weiss, on the road up to Golte, for žlikrofi, štruklji and the local cured meat, savinjski želodec. For a bed there are flats in the market town itself, a woodland campsite by the Savinja and the Mozirska koča hut up on Golte. The tourist office also hires out e-bikes from €10 an hour. Coming up from Ljubljana, the Grom motorcycle museum at Vransko makes a good stop.
Mozirje pairs nicely with Nazarje and its Vrbovec Castle, a few minutes away, and with Rečica ob Savinji, right next door. To the east, Šmartno ob Paki has its old vineyard cottages. All of it belongs to the Savinjska region.
