I'd go to Hiša Franko with time to spare, nobody needing to drive afterwards and happy to be led. I'd book far ahead, mention allergies a week in advance and stay the night in one of its rooms.
Is it for you?
Yes, if…
- Travellers for whom food is a reason to go
- Anyone able to stay over rather than drive
Better not, if…
- Anyone after a quick or à la carte meal
- Anyone who can't book well in advance

01 My tip
Allergies, a week ahead
They adapt the menu for gluten-free, vegetarian or fish-free diets with at least a week's notice, but they can't do vegan or dairy-free menus.

02 Worth the splurge
Sleep in the house
Rooms are only for diners and are booked for a single night; there are no televisions, and breakfast is served in the morning.

A menu written by nature
Every spring they create a new menu about the valley; trout, game, kid, forest fruits and wild plants come from local foragers, shepherds and cheesemakers.
Soča Valley
The 2026 Euphorest menu
Each spring, Hiša Franko creates a menu that tells a different story about the valley, its people and its traditions. The concept holds all year, but the dishes change with what nature provides, so a wild herb from early summer might give way to fermented berries in autumn. The house works with local foragers, shepherds, cheesemakers, hunters and fishermen, and trout, game, kid, forest fruits and wild plants recur on the plates.
There’s a single tasting menu, the same at lunch and dinner, with no à la carte, and the experience lasts about three hours. The 2026 menu is called Euphorest. Drinks are extra, with three pairings or wines by the glass from an extensive cellar. Prices and hours are in the table.
How to book Hiša Franko
Dining is by reservation only, through the online system or by email, and a card is needed to hold the table, although nothing is charged in advance. If you arrive more than half an hour late, the menu may be shortened and still charged in full. They adapt the menu for many diets with a week’s notice, though they don’t do vegan or dairy-free menus. The restaurant is for guests aged 12 and over, the dress code is casual elegant, there are no gift vouchers and well-behaved dogs are welcome. The two dining rooms seat 46, and there’s a private room for groups of 7 to 12.
Staying the night
The house has rooms with private bathrooms and air conditioning, no televisions and minimal electronics, because every window looks outside. Only restaurant guests can book them, for one night, by ticking the option when reserving a table. If there’s no room, the Nebesa chalets will arrange a taxi to the restaurant.

Getting there from Kobarid
The house is about 3 km from Kobarid bus station and has free parking in front. By car you come from Italy via San Pietro al Natisone, from Austria over the Wurzen or Predil passes and from Ljubljana via Nova Gorica or Idrija. By train, the nearest stations are Most na Soči and Cividale del Friuli, about 25 km away, then a scenic 20-minute taxi ride, and you can even land by helicopter in the meadow in front. For the rest of the valley, see the guide to the Soča Valley.
