Most na Soči, where the Soča meets the Idrijca, is the valley's spot for being on the water without rapids: the Doblar dam created a lake the colour of the river, with walks, boat trips, kayaking, canoeing and paddleboarding. It was also a major early Iron Age settlement, has the Mengore open-air museum nearby and is a stop on the Bohinj railway. It has 394 people and belongs to Tolmin municipality.

    How I would do it

Most na Soči is the valley's quiet place to be on the water without rapids. I'd hire a kayak or a paddleboard on the lake, walk the lakeside paths and, if there's time left, head up to Mengore to see the trenches.

A lake the colour of the Soča

Although it's man-made, the lake has the same mysterious colour as the Soča and gives the village a calm air, with gentle panoramic walks.

What I would book for Most na Soči

Things to do on the lake at Most na Soči

The lake was created by the Doblar dam, where the Soča river meets the Idrijca, a few kilometres from Tolmin. Around the water run well-kept, panoramic and undemanding paths, such as the energy trail and the cultural-historical trail. On the lake you can take the Lucija boat, go out in a kayak, a canoe or on a paddleboard, and fly-fish. If you want to be on the water without the rapids of the upper Soča, it’s the best option in the valley.

The local river-sports guidance singles out the lake as the place where beginners learn to handle a kayak before tackling the river. There’s accommodation right by the shore, such as Hotel Lucija and TU’LIE, and nearby at Idrija pri Bači the Zlata ribica country hotel, all on the Soča Valley Tourist Board’s list. It’s a relaxed place to spend a night between the mountains and the vineyards of Brda.

    An Iron Age village

Most na Soči was a large early Iron Age settlement of the Hallstatt period, and the Soča Valley Tourist Board ranks it among the most distinguished sites of its type in the world. Back in the late 19th century the archaeologists Marchesetti and Szombathy excavated seven thousand graves of the so-called Sveta Lucija culture, and their finds are in museums in Vienna, Trieste, Gorizia and Tolmin.

The village archaeological museum, designed by Drago Svoljšek, is inside the elementary school, where the remains of an artisans’ street were found, with a row of houses belonging to potters, smelters and blacksmiths. It can be visited by appointment through the Tolmin Museum. If the subject interests you, there are more in the guide to museums in Slovenia.

    Mengore and its trenches

Two kilometres from the village towards Nova Gorica, at the Poljance pass, the Mengore outdoor museum begins. The path runs through the woods of this 453 m hill, past trenches, caverns, memorials and the stone remains of barracks from the first Austro-Hungarian defence line, shelled for 29 months. In the twelfth battle of the Isonzo, these positions were decisive in pushing the Italians back to the Piave. At the top is a small church of the Virgin Mary with views over the Soča and the Julian Alps.
