I'd stay in Lent or by the main square. Maribor is a city for walking and for evenings, between the Drava and the old-town bars, with Pohorje close by. I'd only sleep up on the mountain on a ski trip.

    My checklist before setting off

Lent and the Drava, the best area

Lent is the riverside quarter on the Drava, home to the world’s oldest vine, the Judgement Tower and the Water Tower. It’s also where the café terraces cluster and where Festival Lent takes place. Hotel Lent is here, at Dravska ulica 9, a three-star superior that, according to its website, has 15 double rooms, two suites with a jacuzzi, its own café and a summer terrace over the river.

For a first visit, this is the area I’d pick. Step outside and you’re on the promenade, and at night there’s no need for wheels of any kind.

    Staying by the main square

A few minutes away, Glavni trg is the heart of Maribor, with its plague column and town hall. Right on the square is Hotel Maribor, a boutique-style place with four-star apartments, a small fifth-floor spa with a Finnish sauna and a Kneipp bath, and a terrace facing Pohorje, according to its website.

The tourist board also highlights the Hotel City Maribor, the Hotel City Map, two B&B Hotels and the Hotel Vila Emei in the centre. For a short break, staying here keeps everything close.

    Staying on Pohorje?

It depends what you’re here for. The Pohorje cable car leaves from a station 5 km out of town and takes you up to Mariborsko Pohorje, Slovenia’s biggest ski area. If you’ve come to ski, sleeping up there makes sense, and the tourist board singles out the Wellness & Spa Hotel Bolfenk and the Grand Hotel Bellevue. If you’ve come for the city, I’d stay below and go up for the day.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Maribor on Expedia and filter by area before price.

    Farms, vineyards and glamping

Around Maribor there are farm stays among vineyards and forest. The tourist board suggests sleeping in a room or a hayloft, hiring a bike, helping bake bread or picking herbs. It’s the option for families or for anyone who wants to switch off completely. And for something different, Chocolate Village by the River is a luxury riverside glamping site where everything revolves around chocolate, with workshops, massages and a pool.

    Practical tips

In 2025 Maribor recorded 270,729 arrivals and 537,564 overnight stays, roughly two nights each, according to SURS. I’d give it three to include Pohorje and a trip to Ptuj. If you’re visiting during Festival Lent, book early, since everything happens in the centre. If you’re in a motorhome, the Oldest Vine House lists car parks in the centre and on the outskirts, with services at the stations, about 20 minutes’ walk from Lent. If you’re still choosing a region, the other areas of the country are covered in hotels in Slovenia.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Maribor and pick one that fits your day.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Maribor on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
