Črnomelj is the largest town in Bela krajina, with 5,432 people and 14,170 in the municipality (SURS, 1 January 2026), and the best base for the River Kolpa. Its old centre, first recorded in 1228, sits on a spit of land between the Lahinja and Dobličica rivers, settled for three thousand years. The black olm, found nowhere else, lives nearby, and Jurjevanje takes place at the end of June.

    How I would do it

You can see Črnomelj in a morning, but I'd use it as a base for the Kolpa. I'd stroll the street of culture, buy a few pretzels and head down to the river to paddle or swim. If I could, I'd come at the end of June for Jurjevanje.

    My notes on Črnomelj

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      A star-shaped town

The Bela krajina tourist board highlights Črnomelj's layout, which links up like a star with the roads from Ljubljana, Novo mesto, Zagreb and Rijeka.

    2. 02 My tip

      See the black olm

The black olm is endemic to the underground waters around Jelševnik, near Črnomelj. Its information centre lets you see it in its natural habitat.

    3. 03 Worth the splurge

The Kolpa from June to September

Rafting on the Kolpa is hugely popular from June to September, with campsites, glamping and canoe and paddleboard hire along the banks.

    4. 04 To save money

      Črnomelj pretzels

Other locals call the people of Črnomelj prestarji. Its women baked and sold simple pretzels and competed over who made the best, says the Bela krajina tourist board.

A small town with a long past

The town is home to 5,432 people and the wider municipality to 14,170, according to SURS figures for early 2026. At 339.8 km² that municipality is one of Slovenia’s biggest, and its guesthouses and hotels counted 19,523 arrivals in 2025.

Local historians, quoted by the Bela krajina tourist board, say the promontory between the Lahinja and Dobličica rivers has been lived on for three millennia, since the Late Bronze Age. In late antiquity it was a significant settlement in this part of the western Balkans, and in the mid-4th century the first church with a mosaic was built here. The town is first recorded in 1228 and had market rights before 1251. The Ottomans never destroyed it, but several fires did serious damage.

Where the name Črnomelj comes from

From a legend. A miller tried to trick a kind fairy disguised as an old woman by grinding her black flour instead of white, and she punished him. Hence the name, roughly ‘the one who mills black’. The local tourist board also points to its star-shaped layout, linking the town to the roads from Ljubljana, Novo mesto, Zagreb and Rijeka.

What to see: the old town

Over the so-called Črnomelj Triple Bridge you reach Trg svobode, with the medieval castle, the Teutonic Order’s commandery and the old savings bank. Running parallel to the main street is Miran Jarc Street, the street of culture, with the Holy Spirit and St Peter’s churches, the music school and the Town Museum in the poet’s birthplace. The newest addition is the Zakladnica, or Treasury, a starting point for exploring the town and the area.

Črnomelj has one key 20th-century date. On 19 and 20 February 1944 the Slovenian National Liberation Council met here for the first time, and the next day the Slovenian National Theatre gave its first performance.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Črnomelj before prices climb.

From the black olm to the Kolpa

The surroundings are the real draw. The black olm, a form of the olm found only in Bela krajina, lives in the underground waters at Jelševnik, and its information centre lets you see it. In the forest above Rožanec stands the Temple of Mithras, which the tourist board calls Slovenia’s most mysterious archaeological site. To the south flows the River Kolpa, with rafting from June to September, campsites and the country’s southernmost trail, from Radenci to Damelj through the Kolpa canyon.

    Jurjevanje and fitting it in

In April spring is welcomed with Zeleni Jurij, Green George, a young man dressed in birch branches, and at the end of June comes Jurjevanje, which the local tourist board bills as Slovenia’s oldest folklore festival. Summer brings the Črnfest youth festival. I’d pair Črnomelj with Metlika and Semič for a weekend in Bela krajina.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Črnomelj and choose by the reviews.
