Ptuj hotels fall into two areas. The old town, small and walkable, with hotels, B&Bs in historic houses and a hostel; and the spa across the Drava, with a four-star hotel, bungalows, a campsite and wine barrels made into glamping pods. In 2025 the town had 68,444 arrivals and 157,699 overnight stays, according to SURS.

To see the town, I'd stay in the old town, with everything five minutes away and dinner on the squares. To unwind or with children, the spa wins. For Kurentovanje, book as soon as you have dates.

    What I would book

    If you only read this

    • The old town is the best area to stay in Ptuj.
    • Terme Ptuj has a spa hotel, bungalows, a campsite and wine-barrel glamping.
    • There are B&Bs in historic houses and a hostel with castle views.
    • Visitors stay about two nights on average.

    My key points

Before you go to Ptuj, this

    1. 01 Most beautiful

Sleep in a house from 1513

B&B Šilak occupies a house protected as cultural heritage, first recorded in 1513 and restored by the family, according to Visit Ptuj.

    2. 02 Worth the splurge

      Thermal water in the bath

Grand Hotel Primus, a four-star superior, pipes thermal water into the bathtubs of its superior rooms and has three suites, according to Visit Ptuj.

    3. 03 To save money

      A hostel with castle views

Family-run Hostel Sonce has bright rooms looking out on the castle and the old town, five minutes' walk away, plus a garden patio.

    4. 04 My tip

      Spa works until 15 December

From 17 August to 15 December 2026 the indoor part of the Terme Ptuj thermal park is being renovated. Meanwhile guests use the pools at Grand Hotel Primus.

The old town, the best area

If you’re here to see Ptuj, the old town makes sense. From anywhere in it you’re minutes from the castle, Mestni trg and the restaurants. Hotel Ptuj is here, a 29-room boutique hotel where each room is themed on a chapter of the town’s history, presented by Visit Ptuj as the first hotel in Slovenia’s oldest town. On the official website, its listing is the one that used to carry the Hotel Mitra name.

Close to the centre, Hotel Pomaranča is a family-run hotel with castle views, saunas and a grill restaurant, and the hotel at Casino Poetovio has modern rooms a step from the sights.

B&Bs in historic houses and a hostel

Ptuj does good B&Bs. B&B Šilak fills a protected house first mentioned in 1513, Muzikafe B&B adds seven rooms to a café with a terrace, gallery and concerts, and B&B Panorama Krapša sits a kilometre from the centre, near Roman remains and a wood that’s a bird refuge.

On a budget, Hostel Sonce is family-run, looks out over the castle and the old town, which is five minutes’ walk away, and has a garden patio for an evening drink.

    Staying at Terme Ptuj?

It depends on why you’re here. Terme Ptuj, across the Drava, has Grand Hotel Primus, a four-star superior with thermal water piped even into the bathtubs of the superior rooms, three suites and a Roman-inspired wellness centre. By the river sits one of Slovenia’s largest water parks, behind the hotel a golf course with castle views, and a short bike ride away, Lake Ptuj.

Watch the dates. From 17 August to 15 December 2026 the indoor section of the thermal park is closed for renovation, and in the meantime guests use the hotel pools, open from 8:00 to 21:00.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ptuj before prices climb.

    Bungalows, camping and barrels

The spa also has three-star apartments and bungalows, a riverside campsite that’s open all year, mobile homes and a Wine Village where you sleep in wine barrels converted into rooms. It’s the option for families, motorhomes and anyone after something different.

    Practical tips

In 2025 Ptuj had 68,444 arrivals and 157,699 overnight stays, just over two nights per visitor according to SURS. I’d give it two. In February, during Kurentovanje, the town fills up and booking well ahead is essential. If you’re still weighing up regions, see my guide to hotels in Slovenia, and if you’re heading north next, the one to hotels in Maribor.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Ptuj and choose by the reviews.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Ptuj before prices climb.
