    Piran guide

Where to stay in Piran, from the car-free old town to Portorož's spa hotels

    Facts checked on
    Piran old town
    Small hotels, no car access
    Parking
    Amfora garage, €1 minibus
    Portorož
Big spa hotels, 3 km away

Hotels in Piran sit in three areas. The old town, with small hotels a few steps from Tartini Square but no car access; Fiesa bay, by the beach and Strunjan park; and Portorož, 3 km away, with the big five-star hotels, seawater pools and spas. The choice depends mostly on whether you have a car.

    My ranking, scored

Where I would stay in Piran

My scores out of 10. They weigh what you can do on foot and how easy it is with or without a car. Opinion, not official data.

    1. Piran old town, by Tartini Square

You sleep at the centre of everything and see the square empty in the morning. The price is leaving the car in the garage.

      9.3 out of 10

    2. Portorož, on the seafront

Big hotels with spas, pools and parking. Piran is 3 km away along a seaside path.

      8.6 out of 10

    3. Fiesa bay

A quiet beach between Piran and Strunjan, beside the country's only brackish lake.

      8.2 out of 10

    4. Strunjan

For nature and rest, next to the landscape park; less handy for dinner in Piran.

      7.9 out of 10

    My verdict

    It depends

It depends on the car. Without one, the old town is the most atmospheric place to sleep on the coast; with one, Portorož is easier, with parking, pools and Piran 3 km away.

Without a car and for one or two nights, I'd stay inside Piran's old town. With a car, with children or wanting a spa and pool, Portorož spares you the garage, has more facilities and leaves Piran a walk away.

    Before you go

Before you go to Piran, this

    1. 01 My tip

      The car stays outside

Several old-town hotels, such as Zala and PiranArt, have no car access and ask guests to park at the Amfora garage in Fornače, then walk or take the bus every 10 to 15 minutes.

    2. 02 Most beautiful

      Five steps from the sea

Hotel Piran, with more than a century of history and 103 rooms, prides itself on being five steps from the sea.

    3. 03 To save money

      Portorož, more choice

Portorož has the big hotels, with their own parking and seawater pools; it is 3 km from Piran, a €1 town bus ride away.

      Portorož
    4. 04 Getting there

      For dinner

Staying in the old town puts the Punta and First of May Square two minutes away, with the town's fish restaurants.

      where to eat in Piran

    Hotels in Piran’s old town

Old-town hotels are small and a few steps from everything. Art Hotel Tartini, a three-star with touches by the Slovenian artist JAŠA, is 50 m from Tartini Square, with rooms overlooking the bay or the square. Hotel Zala, in a quiet part of the old town, has 18 double rooms with work by Slovenian artists and, from June to October, a rooftop bar looking over St George’s. PiranArt Boutique Hotel sits on a quiet street near the sea and welcomes pets, and Miracolo di Mare serves breakfast in a garden and runs a free shuttle to a nearby garage.

The best known is Hotel Piran, with more than a century of history and 103 rooms and suites, five steps from the sea according to its own listing. You can drive up to unload, and reception validates your exit from the Amfora garage.

    Driving? What changes

Almost all of these hotels ask you to leave the car at the Amfora garage, in the Fornače area. From there you walk down or take the bus, which runs every 10 to 15 minutes, or hop on the electric minibus, which drops you at Tartini Square for €1. Driving into the centre is only free for 15 minutes, and then €6 for each hour or part of an hour in season. If that sounds like a hassle, look at the other two areas.

    Portorož, Fiesa and Strunjan

Portorož, 3 km away, has the big hotels. The five-star Palace has the Rose Spa, a private beach and saltwater pools, and it has its own page, the Palace Portorož. Between Portorož and Piran stand the Grand Hotel Bernardin, also five-star, with 241 rooms and a beach area, and the four-star Histrion, with Termaris, the coast’s largest complex of heated seawater pools. Town bus lines 1 and 2 take you to Piran for €1.

On Fiesa bay, Barbara Piran Beach sits by the sea and Slovenia’s only brackish lake, a walk from Piran. And in Strunjan, the Salinera resort, with three and four-star sections, lies next to the landscape park, with a grass beach and a free garage.

    Where I’d stay

For one or two nights without a car, the old town of Piran. For a beach week, with children or a car, Portorož. And if you want peace and nature, Fiesa or Strunjan. Before booking, always check how to park and whether the hotel is inside the car-free zone.
