    Staying in southern Kosovo

Where to stay in Prizren, from the stone bridge outwards

For a hotel in Prizren, the practical choice is the old town, a few minutes from the stone bridge, where OpenStreetMap shows 23 of the city's 34 hotels and 8 of its 9 hostels. The Prizren region had 97 establishments, 1,506 rooms and 3,230 beds in 2025, according to the Kosovo Agency of Statistics, and overnight guests stayed an average of 1.8 nights.

    • In Prizren, the most practical place to stay is the old town, near the stone bridge.
    • The region had 97 establishments and 3,230 beds in 2025, according to ASK.
    • Overnight guests stayed an average of 1.8 nights.
    • In August, with DokuFest, it's worth booking early.

In Prizren I'd stay inside the old town even if it costs a bit more. The town is at its best at night by the river and first thing at the fortress, and you can walk to both if you sleep in the centre.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Worth the splurge

The old town, on foot to everything

The bridge, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, the hammam and the climb to the fortress are all minutes apart. It's the area I'd pay for.

      Hostels by the bridge

OpenStreetMap shows 9 hostels in Prizren, 8 of them within 500 m of the stone bridge. That's the budget option without giving up the centre.

      August fills up with DokuFest

The documentary festival takes nine days of August and packs out the old town. If your dates overlap, book as soon as the festival announces them.

Marash, to sleep by the river

Marash, upriver from the centre, is where the evening stroll happens. Staying nearby keeps the old town a short walk away with the river below.

    What I would book

Prizren is the town in Kosovo where I’m clearest about where to stay. The old town is compact, everything you’ll want to see is a few minutes from the stone bridge, and the place genuinely changes as evening falls. Before getting into areas, an honest caveat. No official body rates individual hotels, which is why you won’t find a list of favourites here. What I can give you is how much there is, where it is and how I’d go about it.

How many beds does Prizren have?

Official capacity figures stop at regional level, so ASK, the statistics agency, counts beds for the Prizren region as a whole, Dragash, Malisheva, Mamusha and Suhareka included, and not for the town on its own. For 2025 it gives 97 establishments with 1,506 rooms and 3,230 beds, plus 169,522 overnight guests who spent 303,766 nights there, and two in three guests came from abroad. The UK alone sent 10,569 guests to Kosovo as a whole that year.

Divide one figure by the other and the average stay comes out at 1.8 nights. It’s my own sum, and it says most people spend one or two nights. That feels short to me for Prizren, which comfortably fills two days with a trip into the mountains.

What the map shows in town

For a finer picture of the town, I counted what OpenStreetMap shows, which isn’t an official register but is the go-to open map. Prizren has 34 hotels, 9 hostels, 8 holiday apartments and 2 motels mapped. Most usefully, 23 of those hotels and 8 of the 9 hostels are within 500 m of the stone bridge.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Prizren on Expedia and filter by area before price.

Which area of Prizren should you stay in?

If it’s your first time and you haven’t got a car, the old town. The Prizren stone bridge, the Sinan Pasha Mosque, the hammam and the path up to the fortress are all minutes apart. That’s where the evening life is, and according to the map that’s where most of the beds are too.

If you’d prefer somewhere calmer without moving far, look towards Marash, upriver, below the Kalaja slope. You’re a short walk from the old town with the river alongside, which is what I’d look for to sleep well.

With a car, the outskirts give you more space and parking, but you lose the best of Prizren, walking out to dinner and strolling back through the centre at night. I’d only do it if you’re using the town as a base for the mountains and setting off early for the Sharr.

When do you need to book ahead?

In August, because of DokuFest, the documentary festival, which runs for nine days and fills the old town. The 2026 edition ran from 7 to 15 August and 2027 dates hadn’t been published as of 10 October 2026. With about 3,230 beds for the whole region, I’d book the moment they’re out.

For the rest of the year I don’t have official monthly occupancy data, so I’d rather not guess at a high season. What the FCDO does flag is waiting times at border crossings in summer and around festive periods, a sign more people are on the move then.
