Northern municipality, Mitrovica region
Zvečan, the municipality with four Special Zones
Zvečan (Zveçan in Albanian) is a municipality in northern Kosovo, right next to Mitrovica, with 35 settlements. The Statistics Agency gives it 434 people counted in 2024 and 2,867 on its estimate. It holds four sites protected under the Special Zones law, the medieval fortress, Banjska and Sokolica monasteries and the Isa Boletini complex.

- Zvečan is a northern municipality beside Mitrovica, with 434 counted and 2,867 estimated in 2024.
- It has four Special Zone sites, the fortress, Banjska, Sokolica and the Isa Boletini complex.
- The FCDO names it among the municipalities with a risk of protests; check the advice on the day.
Zvečan is small in people and big on protected heritage. I'd see it on a day out from Pristina, with Banjska as the main event and the fortress and Sokolica on the way, always with the FCDO update read that morning.

01 Most beautiful
Banjska, about 8 km from town
The monastery the Eparchy of Raška-Prizren presents as King Milutin's foundation of 1313, its church dedicated to St Stephen. A Special Protective Zone.

02 Getting there
The fortress, under a kilometre away
The ruined medieval fortress lies about 900 metres from the centre of town as the crow flies, at 797 m according to OpenStreetMap.

04 My tip
Check the advice before you go
The FCDO lists Zvečan among the northern municipalities with a risk of protests and advises avoiding crowds and following local media.
North Mitrovica
Zvečan carries a contradiction that I think is the best way in. On the census it’s one of Kosovo’s least populated municipalities, yet it’s among those with the most sites under the Special Zones law, four in all. If northern heritage is what you’re after, a good share of it is here.
A small municipality next to Mitrovica
Zvečan (Zveçan in Albanian) has 35 settlements. The 2024 census counted 434 residents and the Statistics Agency also publishes 2,867 with estimation, the same double figure seen across the northern municipalities. The settlements with the most people counted are Zhazhë with 139, Rudar i Madh with 102, Zveçan itself with 54 and Boletin with 44. The OSCE put the area at roughly 122 km² in 2018.
Town is about 4 km from central Mitrovica and barely 3 km from the Ibar bridge, right up against North Mitrovica. The OSCE described an economy of public sector jobs, battery manufacture and recycling, farming and small trade, and noted that the Trepča mining complex still works here at limited capacity.
Four Special Zones
The 2008 Law 03/L-039 lists its protected sites one by one, and Zvečan crops up four times. Banjska monastery, around 8 km from town, is the headline for me. The Eparchy of Raška-Prizren presents it as King Milutin’s foundation, marked its 700th anniversary in 2013 and says monastic life returned on 15 August 2004.
Zvečan fortress is the closest, about 900 metres from the centre, and OpenStreetMap puts it at 797 m. And at Boletin, about 3 km away, Sokolica monastery and the Isa Boletini complex sit together, protected as a single zone since they’re only a hundred metres apart.
Being a Special Zone has consequences. The law bans new industrial projects there, such as mines, dams or factories, and allows restaurants, bars, hotels and public gatherings to be restricted, so don’t count on finding a café next to the monasteries.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Pristina before prices climb.
Churches and religious life
The OSCE counted five Serbian Orthodox churches in 2018, all built after the conflict, three monasteries, two of them Special Zones, and two mosques, also recent. Sokolica has been a convent since 1956, according to the Ministry of Culture, and at Banjska the Eparchy dates the revival of monastic life to 2004.
Before you go
Zvečan appears in the FCDO’s advice alongside Zubin Potok, Leposavić and Mitrovica’s north bank as a place where protests may occur, some violent in the past; keep up with the news and steer clear of crowds. I’d visit by day, from Pristina or paired with Mitrovica, with the day’s advice checked. If you’re driving, remember the FCDO’s warning that some Serbian hire firms won’t let their cars into Kosovo and vice versa. Further west lie Zubin Potok and Lake Gazivoda, and to the north Leposavić.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Pristina and choose by the reviews.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Pristina before prices climb.
