International Documentary and Short Film Festival
DokuFest, nine days of documentaries and shorts in Prizren's old town
DokuFest is Prizren's International Documentary and Short Film Festival, founded in 2002 and, according to its organisers, Kosovo's largest film event. Each August it screens over 200 films across nine days, with open-air cinemas in the historic centre. Edition XXV ran from 7 to 15 August 2026; dates for 2027 hadn't been published as of 10 October 2026.

If your trip falls in August, I'd line Prizren up with DokuFest without a second thought, because it transforms the old town. I'd book a room the moment dates are out, though, and bring cash and patience.

03 My tip
August means border queues
The FCDO warns of long waits at crossings with North Macedonia and Albania in summer and festive periods. Arriving by road in August, allow for them.

Sleep inside the old town that week
The screenings and the festival nights are in the historic centre. A room within walking distance is what I'd pay extra for in August.

What I would book
Some towns change character one week a year, and Prizren does it in August. DokuFest fills the old town with screens, debates and people who’ve come for the films. Ask me when to visit Prizren and this is one of my two answers. The other is any quiet month, to see it without the crowds.
What DokuFest is
It’s Prizren’s International Documentary and Short Film Festival. Its website says it was born in 2002 to bring cinema back to the town and is now Kosovo’s largest film event. Every summer it screens over 200 films across nine days, in venues and open-air cinemas around the historic centre, alongside documentary photo exhibitions, debates, masterclasses and live music.
Two facts put it on the map beyond Kosovo. Since 2019 it has been a BAFTA-qualifying festival for short films, and since 2022 it has qualified films for the European Film Academy. For a British visitor that BAFTA link says a lot. I don’t see it as a local festival on the up but as an industry fixture you can enjoy without accreditation.
2026 and 2027 dates
Edition XXV ran from 7 to 15 August 2026, and on 15 August the festival announced its winners. As of 10 October 2026 the website hadn’t yet published dates for 2027, so I won’t give you any. I’m not working them out from previous years either, because they wouldn’t be announced. When they appear, they’ll go into my calendar of events in Kosovo.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Prizren before prices climb.
How much does it cost?
The 2026 passes page had two options, a 10-film pass for €25, allowing multiple entries per film, and a DokuNights pass, also €25. I won’t give a single-ticket price because I haven’t seen one published. For 2027 it’ll need checking again, as nothing guarantees the same prices.
My budget tip is simple. If you’ll see more than three or four films, the pass pays for itself, and most of your money will go on a bed rather than tickets. Bring euros in cash as well as a card without foreign fees, since sterling isn’t any use here.
Where to stay and getting around that week
The screenings and the festival buzz are in Prizren’s old town, between the river, the bridge and the Sinan Pasha Mosque. The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (ASK) counted 3,230 beds across the entire Prizren region in 2025, which isn’t much for a festival week. So I’d book as soon as dates are out and, ideally, inside the old town so you can walk back at night. The options are on hotels in Prizren, and for dinner on those days, restaurants in Prizren, where 27 restaurants sit within 500 m of the bridge.
If you’re arriving by road, the FCDO warns of waits at crossings with North Macedonia and Albania in summer and festive periods. In August, with the festival on and summer in full swing, I’d allow for them and set off early. As for the heat in those weeks, 38.9 °C in Pristina in August 2024, I cover it in Kosovo in summer.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in DokuFest and choose by the reviews.
How I’d combine it
A festival day in Prizren leaves room for films in the afternoon and evening and a free morning for the town. I’d follow my one day in Prizren plan in the morning, climbing to the fortress early to beat the heat, and keep the afternoon for screenings.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Prizren before prices climb.
