One of Kosovo's seven regions
The Prizren region, from Ottoman lanes to Sharr pastures
The Prizren region is Kosovo's south-west corner. OpenStreetMap puts five municipalities in it, Prizren, Dragash, Malisheva, Mamusha and Suhareka, home to 271,386 people in the 2024 census of the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (ASK). It holds the town of Prizren, the UNESCO-listed Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš, half of Sharr National Park and the Mirusha waterfalls.

- The Prizren region is five municipalities in south-west Kosovo, per OpenStreetMap.
- It had 271,386 residents in the 2024 census.
- It holds the UNESCO-listed Church of Our Lady of Ljeviš and half of Sharr National Park.
- It drew 169,522 overnight guests in 2025, two thirds of them from abroad.
If the south of Kosovo gets one day, give all of it to Prizren town. If it gets two, use the second to head up into the Sharr via Prevalla or down to the Dragash villages, which is where the region shows its other face.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The most listed heritage of any municipality
Prizren municipality accounts for 81 of the 373 entries in the Ministry of Culture's heritage database (DTK), more than anywhere else in Kosovo. Most sit in the old town, walkable between the river and the fortress.

02 Most beautiful
Half a national park inside one municipality
Of Sharr National Park's 39,000 hectares under its 1986 law, 19,500 lie within Prizren municipality and 2,730 within Suhareka, according to Kosovo's environmental protection agency.

03 My tip
August belongs to the film festival
DokuFest, Prizren's documentary festival, ran its 25th edition from 7 to 15 August 2026. Travelling in that week means booking a room earlier than at any other time of year.

04 My tip
Tick sense around Malisheva in summer
The FCDO says Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is endemic in Kosovo and that most cases occur around Malisheva. Long trousers and repellent if you walk through fields or pasture.

What I would book
If you’re doing the Balkans by bus or hire car and Kosovo is one stop on the way, the Prizren region is the part I’d make sure you don’t skip. It packs the territory’s best-preserved Ottoman town, a church on UNESCO’s list and a mountain national park into a small corner of the map, and it all works from a single base.
Five municipalities, one town in charge
Kosovo has seven statistical regions with no government of their own. The Kosovo Agency of Statistics (ASK) uses them for tourism figures but doesn’t publish which municipalities fall into each, so I take the split from OpenStreetMap. On that basis the region has five municipalities, namely Prizren, Dragash (Dragaš in Serbian), Malisheva (Malishevë, Mališevo), Mamusha (Mamushë in Albanian, Mamuşa in Turkish) and Suhareka (Suharekë, Suva Reka).
Prizren does the heavy lifting. Its municipality holds 147,246 of the region’s 271,386 people, and the town, at 76,850, is the second-largest settlement in Kosovo after Pristina. No municipality has more entries in the DTK heritage list kept by the culture ministry, with 81 of the 373. That number tells you more than any brochure would, because it’s why you can wander Prizren for a full day without retracing your steps.
What the rest of the region holds
Dragash is the southern tip, wedged between mountains and borders. Its biggest village isn’t the municipal seat but Brodosanë, with 2,976 people, followed by Restelicë and Brod, two Sharr villages with pages of their own in this guide. Suhareka, to the north, has the Holy Trinity monastery and the Hodegetria church at Mushtisht, both ringed by protective zones under Law 03/L-039. Malisheva has the Mirusha waterfalls, which Kosovo’s environmental protection agency (AMMK) manages as a natural monument.
Mamusha is the odd one out. It’s a municipality made up of a single settlement of 5,607 people, with an official Turkish name and a 19th-century clock tower in the national heritage database. Not a full day out, but a decent stop on a drive north.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Prizren on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Mountains on the edge of town
Sharr National Park was the first national park declared by Kosovo’s Assembly, in 1986. Its founding law gives it 39,000 hectares, and half of them, 19,500, are inside Prizren municipality, with Suhareka adding 2,730. The rest lies in Shtërpcë and Kaçanik, which belong to the Ferizaj region.
In practice, the mountains begin almost where the town ends. Prevalla, a pass inside Prizren municipality, is the most direct way in. I go through what the law says and what isn’t published on the Sharr National Park page.
Guest numbers, and why people leave too soon
ASK recorded 169,522 overnight guests and 303,766 overnight stays in the region in 2025, third behind Pristina and Peja. What stands out is that 113,373 of those guests came from abroad, two in three. Divide nights by guests and the average stay comes out under two nights, which is my own sum on the ASK figures. My reading is that plenty of people treat Prizren as a stopover, and I think they shortchange it.
The region had 97 establishments, 1,506 rooms and 3,230 beds. Nearly all are in town, so where to stay is an easy call, and I cover it under hotels in Prizren.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Prizren and pick one that fits your day.
Before you head out of town
The FCDO flags two things that matter here. Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, a tick-borne illness, is endemic in Kosovo, with most cases around Malisheva, mainly in summer. And there’s a risk of old landmines along the border with Albania, which both Prizren and Dragash touch. Their advice is to keep to main roads, and I’d apply that to any cross-country wander in the south.
The usual Kosovo basics apply too. Prices are in euros, and a card without foreign transaction fees saves you changing pounds in advance. The GHIC won’t help you in Kosovo, so take out travel insurance before you go.
How I’d split the time
A full, unhurried day in Prizren town, then a second day outside it. Walkers should go up to Prevalla and into the park. If villages appeal more, head down to Dragash. With a car and a route heading north, Mamusha and the Mirusha falls both lie in that direction. Three nights in Prizren covers the region properly.
