Climate and temperatures
Weather in Kosovo, month by month from Pristina's records
Kosovo has hot summers and cold winters. In Pristina, the official 2024 table gives highs of 37.6°C in July and 38.9°C in August and a low of -13.9°C in January. It rains or snows on about 7 days in August and about 13 in the wettest months, going by the 2003 to 2024 average I worked out from the statistics agency's data.

- Kosovo has hot summers and cold winters.
- In Pristina in 2024 the high was 38.9°C in August and the low -13.9°C in January.
- August is the driest month, with about 7 days of rain or snow on average.
- Pristina's annual mean was 12°C from 2012 to 2014.
For getting around the whole territory, I would pick late spring or September. July and August suit the mountains, but in Pristina or Prizren the midday heat is serious.

02 My tip
August is the driest month
With about 7 days of rain or snow on average from 2003 to 2024, it is the best month for the high mountains, with heat as the trade-off on the plain.

03 Worth the splurge
Snow for skiing
In January 2024 Pristina dropped to -13.9°C, and up in the mountains there is snow for the Brezovica and Bogë ski areas.

04 My tip
Wildfires from April to October
The FCDO warns of wildfires in those months, so no fires on the hillside outside designated areas.

What I would book
Whatever you are after on Kosovo’s weather, the official benchmark is Pristina. The statistics agency publishes the capital’s temperatures and rain or snow days month by month, using Hydrometeorological Institute data, and that gives a fair picture of the year. There is no recent official series for the other towns, so I will not make one up.
A climate of extremes
The 2024 table gives a high and a low for each month without saying whether they are extremes or averages; from the figures, I read them as each month’s extremes. Even so, the pattern is clear. Winters fall well below freezing, to -13.9°C in January, and summers pass 35°C from June to August, peaking at 38.9°C. The capital’s annual mean, from the same agency’s yearly series, was 12°C in 2012, 2013 and 2014, the last years it publishes.
When it rains
From the 2003 to 2024 series of rain or snow days I worked out a monthly average. The wettest months are January and May, at around 13.5 days, and the driest is August, at around 7. September and October sit at about 10. The table counts days, not rainfall totals, so I cannot tell you how heavy the rain is when it comes.

The mountains play by other rules
A 2003 report that made the case for the Bjeshkët e Nemuna national park explains that the range has a continental climate with a Mediterranean influence pushing up the White Drin valley, turning alpine on the summits. In practice, when the heat builds in Pristina, the mountains are where you escape to, and in winter that is where the snow is. More on Kosovo in winter and Kosovo in summer.
Weather and the roads
If you are driving, the weather matters more than at home. The FCDO rates Kosovo’s roads somewhere between fair and poor, and worse in the countryside or in bad weather, and advises against driving at night. It adds that the border crossings with North Macedonia, Albania and Serbia see queues in the summer months and around festive periods. In winter, with lows below freezing from November to April in the 2024 table, I would not plan mountain stretches late in the afternoon. In summer, set off early to avoid crossing the plain in the worst of the heat.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Pristina and pick one that fits your day.
What to pack
With those figures, my list is simple. From November to March, a proper coat, because every one of those months dipped below zero in 2024. From June to September, light clothes and sun cream, but also a layer for the mountains or the evening, since even in July and August Pristina’s low fell to 10.9°C. In spring and autumn, a waterproof; more in Kosovo in spring and Kosovo in autumn.
Weather-related warnings
The FCDO warns of wildfires from April to October in dry spells, and of landslides and flooding after heavy rain, and notes that air pollution is high, particularly in Pristina. With all that in mind, my choice of dates is on the best time to visit Kosovo, and if you plan to walk, see hiking in Kosovo.
