Travelling June to August
Summer in Kosovo, between the hot plain and the cool of Rugova
Summer is Kosovo's high season. August 2025 was the busiest month of the year, with 92,545 overnight guests, and it is also Pristina's driest, with about 7 days of rain or snow on average. The heat on the plain is serious (38.9°C in August 2024), so the Rugova mountains and the festivals in Prizren and Pristina set the pace.

- August 2025 was the busiest month of the year, with 92,545 overnight guests.
- Pristina reached 38.9°C in August 2024, but it is the driest month.
- DokuFest in Prizren ran from 7 to 15 August 2026.
- The Rugova mountains are where you escape the heat.
In summer I would sleep in the mountains and come down to the towns first thing in the morning. And if your dates clash with DokuFest, book Prizren well ahead or stay outside it.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
August in Prizren, with DokuFest
The documentary festival held its 25th edition from 7 to 15 August 2026, according to its website. No dates for 2027 yet.

02 Worth the splurge
The Rugova via ferrata
Peja's tourism website, a secondary source, describes five via ferrata routes in the canyon, the first of which, Ari, opened in 2010. To me, summer is their natural season.

03 My tip
Ticks in the countryside
gov.uk says Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is endemic, especially around Malisheva in summer. Wear long trousers and check yourself after a walk.

04 Getting there
Border queues
gov.uk warns of waits at the crossings with North Macedonia, Albania and Serbia in the summer months. If you are coming overland, cross early in the day.

What I would book
- Places to stayBooking.com Guesthouses in Rugova The coolest way to spend a Kosovan summer, with the trails and the lakes on your doorstep.
- Places to stayBooking.com Hotels in Prizren for DokuFest The old town fills up during festival week; booking early is the only way to sleep within walking distance of the screens.
- Tours and ticketsGetYourGuide Guided via ferrata in Rugova With a guide and kit included you do not have to guess which route suits your level.
Summer is when most people travel to Kosovo, and the figures make that plain. But this is not a beach summer, and it is not one for sitting on a terrace at midday either. It is mountains by day, towns early and late, and two festivals that pull in thousands. Here is how I would play it.
A hot plain and cool nights
In 2024 Pristina reached 35.8°C in June, 37.6°C in July and 38.9°C in August, according to the statistics agency’s official table. What I like about that table is the other column, the low, which stayed at 10.9°C in July and August. So, oven-hot days and nights when you will be glad of a jacket. On the plus side it barely rains, with about 8.4 days of rain or snow in July and 6.9 in August on the 2003 to 2024 average. To see a town, I would be out by eight and hide from the sun at lunchtime. Think inland Spain in August rather than a British summer.
High season, by the numbers
August 2025 had 92,545 overnight guests, the highest of the year, and 59,485 of them came from abroad. The Peja region, home to Rugova, took 30,449, almost double its June figure. If crowds put you off, June is your month, with 63,502 guests across the territory. That is also before the school holidays back home kick in. If you do not mind company, August has an atmosphere no other month has, and for me that makes up for it.

Head for the hills
With the plain close to 40°C, the answer is to climb. The Rugova Canyon, just outside Peja, is the gateway to the lakes, the walking and the climbing. Peja’s local tourism site, secondary for me since nobody signs it, lists five routes on the Rugova via ferrata, from Ari, opened in 2010, to Peja 360, from 2023. And if a multi-day trek is more your thing, there is the cross-border Peaks of the Balkans trail, although I have not found official figures or permit rules for it.
Film in Prizren, music near Pristina
August belongs to DokuFest, Prizren’s documentary festival, which reached 25 editions in 2026, running 7 to 15 August, according to the festival. At the end of July comes the Sunny Hill Festival, held at Bërnicë e Poshtme, about 15 minutes’ drive from Pristina, according to the organisers. According to the organisers, the 2026 festival took place between 31 July and 2 August. Neither has published dates for 2027 yet.

Staying well in summer
According to gov.uk, Kosovo has endemic Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever, mostly in summer and around Malisheva, and West Nile virus is also present. Ticks and mosquitoes are the culprits, so my summer kit has repellent, long trousers for the countryside and the habit of checking for ticks after a walk. There is also a wildfire risk until October. Your GHIC does not work in Kosovo, so travel insurance is not optional. More in healthcare in Kosovo.

On the plain, very. Pristina hit 35.8°C in June, 37.6°C in July and 38.9°C in August 2024. Nights are cool, with lows of around 10°C, and it is much more pleasant in the mountains.
What is Kosovo's busiest month?
August. In 2025 the statistics agency counted 92,545 overnight guests that month, 59,485 of them from abroad, the highest figure of the year.
When is DokuFest?
In August, in Prizren. The 2026 festival, the 25th, ran from 7 to 15 August according to its website. The 2027 dates have not been announced.
When is the Sunny Hill Festival in Kosovo?
In 2026 it ran from 31 July to 2 August at Bërnicë e Poshtme, about 15 minutes from Pristina. That comes from the festival's own website; there are no 2027 dates yet.
What is there to do in Kosovo in summer?
Mountains in Rugova (walks, lakes and the via ferrata), film at DokuFest in Prizren and music at Sunny Hill near Pristina. I would save the towns for early in the day.
