The church of Gračanica Monastery, with its stepped stone-and-brick domes, standing on a lawn under a deep blue sky

From 4 to 60 km from the capital

The day trips I'd make from Pristina

From Pristina you can do Gračanica monastery and the Roman town of Ulpiana, about 12 km away; the bear sanctuary at Mramor, 20 km; Gadime cave; Novo Brdo fortress, about 39 km; Gazimestan and Sultan Murad's tomb on the outskirts; and, with more time, Prizren, some 60 km in a straight line.

    • The best day trip from Pristina is Gračanica with Ulpiana, about 12 km away, in a morning.
    • The bear sanctuary at Mramor, 20 km away, is the clear choice with children.
    • Novo Brdo and Gadime cave need a car; Prizren deserves an overnight stay.

If I had just one extra day in Pristina, I'd go to Gračanica and Ulpiana in the morning and the bear sanctuary in the afternoon, as they're in the same direction. With a second day, Novo Brdo. Prizren deserves more than a day trip, so I'd stay the night there.

    Before you go

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

Gračanica, the nearest World Heritage site

Gračanica monastery is one of the four Medieval Monuments in Kosovo on UNESCO's list and sits just south of the capital. Its frescoes were finished around 1321, according to the Ministry of Culture.

    2. 02 To save money

Two trips that cost next to nothing

Germia Park is free and the bear sanctuary costs €4 for an adult. You can link them on foot along the 5.6 km Bear Trail.

      Germia Park
    3. 03 Getting there

      Always a booked taxi

gov.uk advises using only pre-booked taxis from registered firms. For a day trip, agree the price first or use the firm the site works with, as the bear sanctuary does.

    4. 04 My tip

      Gazimestan and Murad's tomb together

Both are in the municipality of Obiliq, on the way out of Pristina towards Vushtrri, and the Special Protective Zones law covers Gazimestan and the standard-bearer's tomb as one zone.

    What I would book

    My ranking, scored

My day trips from Pristina, in order

My own marks out of 10. They weigh up each site's value according to official sources, how easy it is to do in a day and what it adds to what you've already seen in the capital. Distances as the crow flies from OpenStreetMap unless stated otherwise.

    1. Gračanica monastery and Ulpiana

A World Heritage monastery and a Roman town less than a kilometre apart, about 12 km from Pristina according to the Ministry of Culture. Both fit into a morning.

      Time: Half a day

      9.3 out of 10

    2. Novo Brdo fortress

The ruins of a medieval mining town with its cathedral, about 39 km from Pristina according to the Ministry of Culture. The one I'm keenest on, though it needs a car.

      Time: A long half-day

      8.7 out of 10

    3. Bear sanctuary at Mramor

Rescued brown bears on 16 hectares, with €4 entry and published opening hours. 20 km by road, says the sanctuary.

      Time: Three hours

      8.5 out of 10

    4. Gadime cave

A natural monument of special importance run by the environment agency, about 21 km away as the crow flies. No official opening hours published.

      Time: Half a day

      8.0 out of 10

    5. Gazimestan and Sultan Murad's tomb

Protected heritage on the outskirts, 4 to 7 km away as the crow flies. A couple of hours covers both, and they combine with Obiliq.

      Time: Two hours

      7.2 out of 10

    6. Germia Park

The city's protected forest, about 3.5 km away, free, with a trail through to the bear sanctuary.

Time: As long as you like

      7.0 out of 10

    7. Janjevo, on the way to Gadime

A village of 1,407 people in 2024 between Gračanica and Gadime Cave, home to four communities according to the OSCE. A short, quiet stop.

      Time: An hour

      6.5 out of 10

Pristina makes a good base because almost everything worth seeing in central Kosovo is under an hour away. This is my list of day trips, ranked by what I think each one adds, with distances from official sources or, where there aren’t any, straight-line figures from OpenStreetMap. I haven’t included any opening times or prices that aren’t published.

Gračanica and Ulpiana, the perfect morning

If you only do one, make it this. Gračanica monastery belongs, with three other monuments, to UNESCO’s Medieval Monuments in Kosovo, on the Danger List since 2006, and its frescoes were completed around 1321 according to the Ministry of Culture. Just west of it, under a kilometre away, lies the Roman town of Ulpiana, which the same Ministry places about 12 km south-east of Pristina.

Both fit into a morning. The monastery is a working religious house, home to nuns, so dress modestly and respect the services.

Bears and woods, the plan with children

The Pristina bear sanctuary is at Mramor, 20 km by road according to its website, and looks after brown bears rescued from restaurant cages. Entry is €4 for an adult and it publishes its hours, which is a welcome change. You can get there by taxi, on the local bus to Mramor or on foot along the Bear Trail from Germia Park, 5.6 km of path.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Pristina before prices climb.

Novo Brdo and Gadime, by car

The Novo Brdo fortress is the trip that tempts me most. It’s the ruin of a medieval silver and gold mining town, cathedral and all, about 39 km south-east according to the Ministry of Culture, and it’s a Special Protective Zone as a medieval town. To the south, in Lipjan, Gadime cave is a natural monument run by the environment agency. For both you’ll want a car, and for the cave, check first that it’s open, because official sources don’t publish its hours.

    Gazimestan and Sultan Murad’s tomb

Where Pristina gives way to Obiliq, on the Vushtrri road, Law 03/L-039 protects the Gazimestan memorial and the standard-bearer’s tomb as a single Special Protective Zone. Close by, at Mazgit, stands Sultan Murad I’s tomb, also from the 1300s. A couple of hours covers both.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Pristina and choose by the reviews.

    Further afield, Mitrovica and Prizren

Mitrovica is about 34 km away as the crow flies, with Vushtrri, its bridge and its fortress on the way. Bear in mind that gov.uk flags a risk of protests in the part of Mitrovica north of the river Ibar. Prizren, some 61 km away in a straight line, can be done in a day, but I’d stay over, at least for one night. And if you’re starting from Prizren, the trips around there, from the Sharr mountains to Mamusha, are in the Prizren region guide. Prizren is also where DokuFest, the documentary film festival, ran its 25th edition between 7 and 15 August 2026, its website says.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Pristina before prices climb.
