Mitrovicë e Veriut municipality, northern Kosovo

North Mitrovica, the other bank of the Ibar

North Mitrovica (Mitrovicë e Veriut in Albanian, Severna Kosovska Mitrovica in Serbian) is a separate municipality north of the River Ibar, with three settlements. The Statistics Agency gives it 2,326 people counted in 2024 and 7,920 on its estimate. The FCDO flags a risk of protests in this part of Mitrovica and advises avoiding gatherings.

    • North Mitrovica is the municipality of Mitrovicë e Veriut, north of the Ibar and separate from Mitrovicë.
    • It had 2,326 people counted in 2024 and 7,920 on the Statistics Agency's estimate.
    • The FCDO flags a risk of protests here; read the advice on the day you go.

I wouldn't come to North Mitrovica for its monuments, because the Ministry of Culture database lists none. I'd see it as part of Mitrovica, by day, with that morning's FCDO update read and well clear of any crowd.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 My tip

      Two population figures, both official

The 2024 census counted 2,326 people and the Statistics Agency also publishes 7,920 with estimation. It doesn't explain the gap, so both are given here.

    2. 02 Getting there

You reach it over the Ibar bridge

The bridge joining the two municipalities is the town's landmark. I describe it using what the official sources say.

    3. 03 Getting there

Isa Boletini, about 4 km away

Just inside Zvečan municipality, the Isa Boletini kulla complex is a museum and shares a Special Zone with Sokolica monastery.

    4. 04 Getting there

      Zvečan, right next door

The town of Zvečan is about 3 km from the bridge as the crow flies, with its medieval fortress protected as a Special Zone.

      Zvečan

This is one of those pages I write so that nobody arrives with the wrong idea. North Mitrovica isn’t a district of Mitrovica in any administrative sense, it’s a municipality in its own right, and it isn’t a place with listed heritage either. What it is, according to the travel advice, is the part of town where it pays most to read up before you go.

A separate municipality with three settlements

The Kosovo Agency of Statistics lists Mitrovicë e Veriut as a municipality of its own with three settlements. The main one, Mitrovica e Veriut, has 2,089 people in the tables by settlement, followed by Suhodoll i Epërm with 234 and Suhodoll i Poshtëm with 3. The municipal total is 2,326 counted in 2024, and the Agency adds a second figure, 7,920, with estimation. For 2011 it gives nothing.

That double figure recurs in all four northern municipalities, Mitrovicë e Veriut, Zveçan, Zubin Potok and Leposaviq, because the census recorded very few residents there. The source says no more and neither will I. I take both numbers and label each one.

    What’s on the far bank

I’ll be blunt here. This municipality doesn’t appear at all in the Ministry of Culture database; the OSCE’s 2018 profile counted one on the official list without naming it. On places of worship, the same profile lists two Serbian Orthodox churches built after the conflict and two mosques, one older and one built in Suhodoll in 2016.

The officially recorded sites are close by, but in other municipalities. About 4 km from the bridge, the Isa Boletini complex shares a Special Zone with Sokolica monastery, and Zvečan fortress is closer still, roughly 2 km off.

    What the FCDO says

For Kosovo as a whole the FCDO sees a broadly stable picture, but it singles out Zvečan, Zubin Potok, Leposavić and the Mitrovica districts beyond the Ibar as places where protests are a risk, some of them violent in the past. In its section on regional risks it adds that tensions in the north have eased since 2024, although the north is still politically delicate and things can shift fast, with local incidents possible at short notice. Spain’s foreign ministry, for its part, mentions frequent road blocks in the Serb-majority northern municipalities.

My practical reading runs like this. Go by day, with no gathering in sight, having checked the advice that same morning, and don’t photograph police or military installations, which the FCDO says can lead to difficulties with the authorities. You can sign up on GOV.UK for email alerts when the Kosovo advice changes, which I’d do a week before travelling. Bear in mind too that a UK GHIC won’t cover you anywhere in Kosovo, so proper travel insurance is the safety net.

    How to fit it in

North Mitrovica is best seen as part of Mitrovica, crossing the Ibar bridge, and it runs straight into Zvečan, about 3 km from the bridge. If you want to take in the whole north in order, it’s all in the Mitrovica region guide.
