256 km, 3 h 23 min before the border
Tirana to Pristina by car, bus or taxi
Tirana to Pristina is 256 km by road, around three hours twenty by car before any border wait, according to OpenStreetMap routing, and most of it is motorway. You can do it by bus, car or taxi. If you drive, your green card isn't valid in Kosovo, and gov.uk says to buy local insurance at the border, paying in euros cash.
Coming from Albania, I wouldn't drive straight through to Pristina. I'd stop in Prizren, which comes first, 179 km from Tirana, and stay the night. It's the best town in Kosovo to start with and saves you doubling back.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 My tip
Prizren is on the way
By OpenStreetMap routing, Prizren is 179 km from Tirana, two and a half hours by car. Stopping there splits the journey into two easy legs.
Prizren -
02 Money
Euros for the insurance
Your green card isn't valid in Kosovo. Gov.uk says to buy local third-party insurance at the border and carry enough euros in cash to pay for it.

03 My tip
Summer queues
Gov.uk warns of delays at the Kosovo-Albania crossing, especially around festive periods and in summer. Take water and something to eat.
Balkans itinerary -
04 Getting there
Heading on to Serbia?
Entering Kosovo from Albania closes the exit to Serbia through its Kosovo crossings. You'll need to leave via North Macedonia or another country.
Kosovo-Serbia border
Tirana to Pristina is one of the routes most searched by people combining Albania and Kosovo, and it has one clear advantage. Most of it is motorway. What needs planning is the border, the insurance if you’re driving and, above all, whether you really want to go straight to Pristina.
Distance and road
OpenStreetMap routing gives 256 km from central Tirana to central Pristina, about three hours twenty before the border, and 243 km from Tirana airport. The route it calculates leaves on Albania’s SH2, heads north on the A1 motorway and, once in Kosovo, carries on along the R7 motorway into Pristina.
At the Kosovo-Albania border, gov.uk notes that queues happen from time to time, mostly in July and August and around public holidays, and recommends having food and water with you. Opening hours for that crossing aren’t published anywhere official I’ve seen, so I’m leaving them out. If you’re heading for Gjakova or Peja rather than the capital, OpenStreetMap routing puts them 211 km and 268 km from Tirana respectively.
Papers at the border
Gov.uk’s conditions for a British passport are simple. No damage, in date until you leave and no extra months required, and a tourist can stay 90 days visa-free. The officer may want to know the purpose of your trip or see that you can fund it, and you’ll get a 90-day stamp. Keep the passport on you afterwards too, because gov.uk advises carrying it for identification. The full rules are in Kosovo entry requirements.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Prizren before prices climb.
Bus, car or taxi
By coach it’s the most searched international route alongside Skopje, but I couldn’t open a single official page with times or prices, so check at the station. What I know about Pristina’s bus station is in Kosovo buses.
By car it’s straightforward, with two conditions. First, your hire firm has to allow the crossing. Second, insurance. Kosovo won’t take the green card, and gov.uk’s instruction is to buy a local third-party policy at the border post or the next town along, cash in euros. The other rules are in driving in Kosovo. A taxi works the same way as inside Kosovo; use a registered firm.
Why I’d stop in Prizren
Look at the map and Prizren comes before Pristina when you’re driving from Albania, 179 km from Tirana and two and a half hours by car. I’d spend the night there. To my mind it’s the most complete old town in Kosovo, and from there Pristina is just 84 km further. What to see is in Prizren.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Prizren and choose by the reviews.
If Serbia comes next
Entering Kosovo from Albania has a consequence you mustn’t forget. With no Serbian entry stamp from before, gov.uk says the Kosovo-Serbia crossings won’t get you into Serbia, so you’d go round via a third country, usually North Macedonia. If your trip carries on to Belgrade, put it in the right order with my Balkans itinerary.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Prizren before prices climb.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Tirana to Pristina?
About three hours twenty by car for 256 km, by OpenStreetMap routing, before any border wait. By coach, with stops and the border check, allow a good deal longer.
Is there a bus from Tirana to Pristina?
It's a heavily searched route, but I haven't found timetables or fares from an official source. Confirm them at the bus station or with the operator.
How far is Tirana from Pristina?
256 km by road from central Tirana and 243 km from Tirana airport, according to OpenStreetMap routing.
Can you do a day trip from Tirana to Kosovo?
You can, but I wouldn't do Pristina and back in a day. If a day is all you have, Prizren is 179 km from Tirana and a far more rewarding visit.
Can I drive a hire car from Albania into Kosovo?
It depends on the firm, so ask when you book. If they allow it, remember your green card isn't valid and gov.uk says to buy local insurance at the border.
