Travelling December to February
Winter in Kosovo, from Rugova's snow to Pristina's cold snaps
Winter in Kosovo is properly cold. Pristina fell to -13.9°C in January 2024, and it rains or snows on about 13 days a month in December and January. Even so, January 2025 was the Peja region's third busiest month, with 21,986 overnight guests. That is the region of the Rugova mountains.

- Kosovo is cold in winter, with -13.9°C in Pristina in January 2024.
- It rains or snows on about 13 days a month in December and January.
- You can ski at Bogë (Rugova) and Brezovica (Sharr).
- January 2025 brought 21,986 overnight guests to the Peja region.
If you go in winter, go for the snow and do not try to see everything. Pick one base, Peja for Rugova or the Brezovica area for the Sharr mountains, and only drive in daylight.

What I would keep in mind

01 Worth the splurge
Skiing at Bogë, 36 km from Peja
Peja's tourism website, a secondary source, describes a slope with a lift at Bogë, ski schools and snowshoeing, on a tarmac road from town.

02 My tip
Drive in daylight
gov.uk rates the roads as fair to poor, worse in bad weather, and advises against driving at night. In winter that goes double, and remember you are on the right.

17 February in Pristina
Every Independence Day the Newborn monument gets a new paint job, according to Pristina municipality's tourist map. It is the big date of the winter in the capital.

February, quieter than January
February 2025 saw 51,796 overnight guests across Kosovo, about 17,000 fewer than January, with the same snowy scenery up in the mountains.

What I would book
Winter is not the season I would suggest for a first look at Kosovo, and I may as well say that now. But there is one kind of traveller for whom December, January and February are exactly right, and that is anyone going for the snow. The official figures suggest there are plenty of them.
How cold it gets
The Kosovo Agency of Statistics publishes Pristina’s temperatures using data from the Hydrometeorological Institute. In January 2024 the low reached -13.9°C, in February -7.7°C and in December -5.1°C. The table does not say whether these are extremes or averages, but from the values I read them as the coldest night of each month. Add the damp, too. Average out the 2003 to 2024 figures and January has 13.5 days of rain or snow, December 12.9. Pack a proper coat, waterproof boots and one more layer than you think. The full year is in weather in Kosovo.
Why the Peja region fills up in January
This is the number that made me look at winter differently. In January 2025 the Peja region had 21,986 overnight guests, more than in June, September or October and behind only July and August. The obvious explanation is the Rugova mountains. According to pejatourism.org, an unsigned site I only lean on as a secondary source, the Bogë ski area lies 36 km west of town along a maintained tarmac road and has a lifted slope, ski schools, snowshoe routes and a few bars and restaurants. I have not found lift pass prices or season dates from any official source, so I am not going to guess them.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Peja for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The Sharr mountains and Brezovica
The other snow is in the south, in the Sharr mountains, where Brezovica is the resort people know. The same caveat applies as with Bogë. Without an official website from the operator I have no runs, lifts or prices I can back up, and I will not make them up. If skiing is the point of your trip, the two are compared in skiing in Kosovo.
The roads decide your day
Winter catches a lot of people out right here. gov.uk rates the road surface as fair to poor, with rural stretches and bad weather making it worse, and its advice is not to drive at night. They drive on the right, and if you hire a car you will be doing it on mountain roads with short days. I would never plan a pass for late afternoon. Leave in daylight, arrive in daylight and always have a plan B if it snows. The rest of what you need behind the wheel is in driving in Kosovo.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Peja on GetYourGuide.
Winter holidays
Kosovo’s official holiday calendar, based on Law 03/L-064, has four fixed dates in these months. New Year on 1 and 2 January, Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, Independence Day on 17 February and Catholic Christmas on 25 December. 17 February has its own ritual in Pristina, the repainting of the Newborn monument, which I cover in Kosovo Independence Day.
February, the month I would choose
If you are going for the snow and have a choice, February tempts me. In 2025 Kosovo had 51,796 overnight guests that month, about 17,000 fewer than in January, and the Peja region had 12,904, almost half. The mountains are still white and there are fewer people on the slope and in the guesthouses. One last thing for a British skier, your GHIC does not work here, so check that your travel policy includes skiing.
