What Kosovo drinks
Birra Peja, the beer that comes down from the Rugova mountains
Kosovo's best-known beer is Birra Peja, brewed in Peja since 1971, according to the Kosovo Privatization Agency. It was socially owned until it was privatised in 2006 and now belongs to the Devolli Group. The range covers lager, pilsner, helles, weizen, an unfiltered beer called Crudo and an alcohol-free one.

- Kosovo's beer is Birra Peja, brewed in Peja.
- The recipe dates from 1971 and was created by a German brewmaster, the brand says.
- It was socially owned until 2006 and now belongs to the Devolli Group.
- Crudo, the unfiltered beer, is made with water from the Rugova mountains.
If you only try one, order the Crudo, the one that strays furthest from a generic lager. And if you are in Peja, head out afterwards to the White Drin spring, which is where the water is said to come from.

01 Most beautiful
Water from the Rugova mountains
The brewery says Crudo is made with water from the Rugova mountains, and Peja's tourism website links the White Drin spring with the brewery's supply.

02 Worth the splurge
Crudo, unfiltered and unpasteurised
The cloudy one in the range. According to its launch note it is neither filtered nor pasteurised, which gives it more body and a fuller flavour.

A 25 cl lager bottle
In 2022 Birra Peja added a 5.0% lager in a 0.25 litre bottle, meant to be served cold in bars and restaurants.

It isn't the only local beer
At Beerfest Kosova in 2022, which Birra Peja sponsored, it shared the bar with four other local brands, Birra Prishtina, Morea, Illyrian Castle and Sabaja, according to Telegrafi.

What I would book
Order a beer in a bar in Kosovo and the odds are you’ll be handed a Birra Peja. It isn’t a cult craft beer but the territory’s big brand, which is exactly why I wanted to know where it comes from and who’s behind it. The brewery’s website makes you confirm your age before it lets you in, so I’ve pieced the story together from the Kosovo Privatization Agency and the business press, and taken from the brand only what it alone can know, its range.
From state-owned works to private group
The brewery is in Peja, at 160 Nexhdet Basha street, and it has been brewing since 1971. The Kosovo Privatization Agency, which lists it among its success stories, says it was socially owned until 2006, when it was privatised, and that around €25.5 million went into new lines, technology, energy and marketing by the end of 2010. Since 2010 it has bottled still and sparkling water too, it sells into Albania, Montenegro and North Macedonia, and it employs about 200 people.
Ownership has one more twist. In July 2014 the Slovenian brewer Pivovarna Union sold its 57.63% stake in Birra Peja, according to the business press at the time, and the brewery is now part of the Devolli Group. The brand adds that a German brewmaster created the recipe and that it’s Kosovo’s number one beer, two claims I take for what they are, the brewer’s own word.
The water, the part I like
What sets this beer apart, if you take the brewer at its word, is the water. The brand talks of natural spring water and, when it launched Crudo, explained that it is brewed with water running off the Rugova mountains. Peja’s tourism website, a secondary source with no named publisher, goes further and connects the White Drin spring at Radavc with the town’s supply and the brewery’s. If that sort of story appeals, the river’s source is right beside Radavc Cave, and the rest of that watery landscape is in the Rugova Canyon.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Peja before prices climb.
What to order
The catalogue lists seven beers, Lager, Pilsner, Helles, Weizen, Crudo, Chill and Zero, the alcohol-free one. Only two come with published details. The Lager is 5.0% and since 5 July 2022 has also come in a 0.25 litre bottle. Crudo is cloudy because it is neither filtered nor pasteurised, and the brand suggests it with meat, fish and traditional cooking. That is where I would start. One lager tastes much like another across half of Europe; an unfiltered beer brewed with water from the mountain next door at least says something about the place.
Not the only beer in Kosovo
If you fancy a comparison, there are other local brands. At Beerfest Kosova in 2022, which drew around 20,000 people to Pristina from 19 to 21 August according to Telegrafi, Birra Peja was the main sponsor and shared the bar with four other local beers, Birra Prishtina, Morea, Illyrian Castle and Sabaja. The festival was back in July 2023 beside the Palace of Youth, but I’ve found no dates for 2026 or 2027, so don’t count on it as a fixed plan.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Peja and choose by the reviews.
What I can’t tell you
Nobody I’ve read, neither the brand nor the agency, advertises brewery tours, so I wouldn’t build a day around one. There’s no published strength for the rest of the range either, and no official figures on what a pint costs in a bar, and I’d rather not quote one from hearsay. If any of that appears, I’ll add it here.
Beer and rakia on the street
In Pristina, the municipality’s tourist brochure describes whole streets of bars and cafés, among them the one known for its rakia cafés, and says the drinks of choice there are traditional rakia and beer. The wider picture of evenings out is on Pristina nightlife, and wine, the territory’s other big drink, on Kosovo wine.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Peja before prices climb.

Frequently asked questions
What is the local beer in Kosovo?
Birra Peja, brewed in Peja. The brewery describes it as the number one beer brand in Kosovo and dates its recipe to 1971.
Where is Peja beer made?
In Peja, in western Kosovo. The address the brand gives is Rr. Nexhdet Basha 160, 30000 Pejë.
Is there an alcohol-free Peja beer?
Yes, Birra Peja Zero is in the brand's catalogue alongside Lager, Pilsner, Helles, Weizen, Crudo and Chill.
How strong is Peja beer?
The Lager is 5.0%, according to the brewery's 2022 note. I found no published strength for the rest of the range on its website.
Is Peja beer sold outside Kosovo?
The Kosovo Privatization Agency lists exports to Albania, Montenegro and North Macedonia. I haven't found any UK stockist, so I can't point you to a shop at home.
Can you tour the Birra Peja brewery?
Not that I can find. Neither the brand nor any other source advertises tours, so I wouldn't plan a day around it. What you can see is the White Drin spring at Radavc, about 11 km from Peja, where the water story starts.
