Letnicë (Letnica), Viti municipality
Letnica, a small village with a big shrine
Letnica (Letnicë in Albanian) is a village in Viti municipality, south-eastern Kosovo, with 168 people in the 2024 census. Its Catholic church, which OpenStreetMap lists as Zonja e Madhe, is to the Diocese of Prizren-Pristina the Letnica shrine, where the bishop held confirmations for three parishes on 16 May 2026.

- Letnica is a village of 168 people in Viti municipality, south-eastern Kosovo.
- The Diocese of Prizren-Pristina calls its Catholic church a shrine.
- On 16 May 2026 the bishop held confirmations there for three parishes.
- Nothing in the village is on the Ministry of Culture heritage register.
Letnica is for people coming to see the shrine, not a village with much else on offer. I'd combine it with Binçë and Stubëll on a loop through Viti's Catholic heritage, and check with the parish before going on a feast day.

A white church with twin towers
The Commons photo shows the shrine's white front, with two spired towers, a clock in the pediment and a stone statue to one side.

02 Getting there
About 8 km from Viti
OpenStreetMap puts Letnica about 8 km east of Viti town and about 19 km south of Gjilan as the crow flies.

03 My tip
Binač, the Orthodox ruin nearby
The ruins of Binač Monastery, with a 100 m Special Protective Zone, are at Buzovik, about 5 km west in a straight line.

Letnica is an odd one in this guide, a village with very few residents and a name that carries far beyond its size. The reason is its church. I’ll tell you what I can support with a source and be upfront about what I can’t, which here is quite a lot.
The village
Letnica (Letnicë in Albanian) is a settlement in Viti municipality, south-eastern Kosovo, in the Gjilan region. When the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (ASK) took its 2024 census, it recorded 168 residents, against 267 in 2011. Viti municipality as a whole had 35,566 people spread over 39 settlements, so Letnica is one of its smaller villages by some distance. OpenStreetMap puts it about 8 km east of Viti town and about 19 km south of Gjilan as the crow flies.
Kosovo’s register of cultural heritage, the DTK, has no entry for Letnica, and the Special Protective Zones law doesn’t mention it either. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing to see, only that its church has no entry in that database.
The shrine
The Catholic Diocese of Prizren-Pristina calls the village church the Letnica shrine, Shenjtërorja e Letnicës. Its website reports that on Saturday 16 May 2026 Bishop Dodë Gjergji celebrated a solemn Mass there at which young people from the parishes of Letnica, Stubëll and Binçë were confirmed. In other words, the shrine acts as a focal point for several Catholic parishes in the area, including Binçë and Stubëll, whose own churches are on the heritage register.
OpenStreetMap records the church as Zonja e Madhe, Albanian for the Great Lady, a reference to the Virgin Mary. The header photo, also from Commons, shows its white front with two spired towers, a clock in the pediment and a stone statue in the foreground.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Gjilan before prices climb.
What the sources don’t say
The building’s history, the image venerated there, the feast days and Mass times are all missing from the official sources I could read. There’s plenty online about pilgrimages, but nothing I could confirm with the diocese, so I’m not repeating it.
Visiting
Drive via Viti, as I couldn’t find official buses to the village, and remember it’s right-hand traffic. Out of town, road surfaces range from fair to poor by the FCDO’s reckoning, and it’s best not to drive at night. Services are held here, so dress modestly and keep out of the way if one is on. And change your pounds into euros before you leave Pristina or Gjilan, because a village of this size is no place to go looking for a bureau de change.
I’d pair it in a day with the municipality’s other two listed Catholic churches, St Anthony’s at Binçë and St George’s at Stubëll, and with the ruins of Binač Monastery at Buzovik, about 5 km west. For beds, Gjilan is the best-stocked base. Catholics number 27,815 in the 2024 census, as I set out in Kosovo religion.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Gjilan and choose by the reviews.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Gjilan before prices climb.
