The stone ruins of the Holy Archangels Monastery near Prizren, with white buildings and wooded slopes behind

The Holy Archangels Monastery lies in the Lumbardhi river gorge, around Jabllanicë, east of Prizren. Kosovo's Law 03/L-039 protects it as a Special Zone with its own map, and the national heritage database lists it as an archaeological site. Newer white buildings stand beside the ruins. No visiting hours are published.

I'd see it as the first stop on a trip upriver towards Prevalla and the Sharr mountains rather than an outing in its own right. Go respectfully; it's a religious site protected by law.

    Before you go

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

      Medieval ruins against the forest

The heritage database records it as an archaeological site. What you see are ruined stone walls beside newer white buildings, with the wooded gorge behind.

    2. 02 My tip

An Ottoman bridge in the same gorge

In the Lumbardhi gorge the database also lists a 16th-century Ottoman bridge and the old hydroelectric plant, now a museum of electro-economy.

    3. 03 Getting there

      On the road towards Prevalla

It's east of town, upriver. Prevalla and Sharr National Park lie further east in the same direction.

      Prevalla

A short way upriver from Prizren’s old town, the Lumbardhi valley narrows into a gorge. That’s where the ruins of the Holy Archangels Monastery stand, and to me they’re the best excuse to leave town without going far.

What the law protects and the database records

The monastery has two official records that complement each other. Kosovo’s protected-zones statute, passed in 2008, includes it in article 7.1 as «Manastiri i Arkangjelit të Shenjtë, Prizren», among the zones with an annexed map. And the government’s monument catalogue (DTK) records it as «Manastiri i Kryeëngjujve», an archaeological site in the Gryka e Lumbardhit, the river gorge, around Jabllanicë, with provisional protection from 2012.

The fact that the DTK files it as archaeology tells you the essential thing. What you visit are ruins. The photo on this page shows them beside newer white buildings with forest behind. Building dates, plan or history I don’t have from an official source, and I won’t pad them out.

What does carry weight is the company the law puts it in. Article 7.1 groups 18 zones with their own maps, including Visoki Dečani, the Patriarchate of Peć and Gračanica. Three come from Prizren municipality, the Holy Archangels, St George’s church in Gornjasellë and the hermitage of St Peter in Korisha. In neighbouring Suhareka, by contrast, the law creates Special Zones in just one village, Mushtisht. In other words, the law gives it the same rank as Visoki Dečani or the Patriarchate of Peć.

    The Lumbardhi gorge

The gorge holds more listed heritage than the monastery alone. The DTK records a 16th-century Ottoman bridge there, the old gorge bridge, and the former hydroelectric plant, now a museum of electro-economy, from the 20th century. In one short stretch of river, then, you get the Middle Ages, the Ottoman era and early industry. For the bridge in the town centre, see the Prizren stone bridge.

    Visiting respectfully

No official source publishes hours or visiting rules as of 10 October 2026. As at any Orthodox monastery, my approach is to ask before going in, cover shoulders and knees, keep quiet and only take photos where it’s allowed. British travel advice lists places of worship among the possible targets of an attack it can’t rule out. It names no monastery and doesn’t advise against visiting, and I’m passing that on exactly as it stands. For background on the Special Zones and the other monasteries, see Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo.

    How I’d combine it

For me it makes more sense as the first stop on a mountain day than as a standalone trip. Keep heading east and you reach Prevalla, on national park land. If you only have one day in Prizren, leave it out, as I explain in one day in Prizren. With two, the second can start here.

If you’re hiring a car for this, remember that a UK licence with a photo is accepted in Kosovo according to the FCDO, and that European green card insurance isn’t valid, so you’ll need local cover at the border if you’re driving in from abroad.
