The Church of the Holy Saviour in Prizren, built of stone and brick with two towers, rising above the greenery of the hillside

    • The Church of the Holy Saviour is 14th century, per Kosovo's heritage database.
    • It stands in Nënkalaja, the quarter below Prizren Fortress.
    • Law 03/L-039 includes it in the Special Zone of the historic centre.
    • No visiting hours are published.

I wouldn't travel just for this church, but I wouldn't climb to the fortress without passing it either. Its spot on the slope, with the old town spread below, is a big part of its appeal.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 My tip

On the way up to the fortress

The heritage database places it in Nënkalaja, the quarter on the slope up to the Kalaja. Take that side and it's right on your route.

Inside the old town's Special Zone

Law 03/L-039 names it explicitly in the Special Zone of Prizren's historic centre, alongside Our Lady of Ljeviš and the Marash quarter.

A second 14th-century church next door

In Nënkalaja the database also lists the church of Shën Diela, which its record also calls «Dëftimi i Shën Mërisë», from the same 14th century.

      Kosovo monasteries

Some churches you go looking for and others you stumble upon. Prizren’s Church of the Holy Saviour is the second sort. It sits on the slope up to the fortress, and if you take that path you’ll pass it almost by accident, with the old town below and the walls of the Kalaja above.

    What the official sources say

In the DTK, the national register of protected monuments, it appears as «Kisha e Shën Spasit», a Late Middle Ages church of the 14th century in the Nënkalaja quarter, under provisional protection set between 2012 and 2014. The 2008 protected-zones legislation calls it «Kisha e Shpëtimtarit të Shenjtë» and places it within the old town perimeter, in the same sentence as Ljeviš and Marash.

I have no official source for its floor plan or the state of its frescoes, so I won’t describe them. The photo on this page shows it as you’d see it from below, among the greenery of the slope.

Nënkalaja, the quarter below the fortress

The name says it all. Nënkalaja means roughly «below the fortress», which is exactly what it is. In the same quarter the DTK lists a second 14th-century church, Shën Diela, which its record also calls «Dëftimi i Shën Mërisë». Two medieval churches on the side of a Roman fortress, with an Ottoman town at their feet, is a pretty faithful summary of Prizren.

For context, the DTK lists five 14th-century churches within the town itself. They are Our Lady of Ljeviš, the Holy Saviour, Shën Diela, St George Runović and St Nicholas Tutić. The last three were given protection in the same round, between 2012 and 2014, just like this one. Two of the five share this slope, which makes Nënkalaja the clearest medieval quarter in the old town.

    How to fit it in

Use it as a breather on the climb to Prizren Fortress. If you go up in the late afternoon, as I would, you’ll pass it in good light. No visiting hours are published, so plan to see it from outside. If it happens to be open, the usual courtesies apply, modest clothing and quiet voices.

For the full Orthodox circuit of the old town, add St George’s Cathedral on the Shatërvan and Our Lady of Ljeviš in Atik Mahalla. And for monasteries across the rest of Kosovo, see my guide to Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo.

    Why I include it

Because Prizren isn’t just its mosques, and because this church is somewhere you’ll be walking anyway. It isn’t the most important in the old town, that role belongs to Ljeviš, but it’s the best placed, and that counts when time is short. If you’re a walker used to British hill paths, the slope won’t trouble you; just bring shoes with grip. You can see where it sits in my order of visit on the Prizren page.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Church of the Holy Saviour and pick one that fits your day.
