Travelling March to May
Spring in Kosovo, from March to May
Spring is Kosovo's quietest season and one of its wettest. In 2025 March had the fewest overnight guests of the year (40,239) and May had climbed to 61,931. Pristina sees rain or snow on about 13 days a month from March to May, and in 2024 the highs were 25°C in March, 28.4°C in April and 25.8°C in May.

- Spring is Kosovo's quietest season.
- March 2025 had the fewest overnight guests of the year, 40,239.
- Pristina gets rain or snow on about 13 days a month from March to May.
- Fixed holidays on 9 April, 1 May and 9 May; Bajram and Easter move.
The second half of May is, for me, the sweet spot of the Kosovan spring. Green countryside, water in the mountain lakes, and neither the heat nor the crowds of summer yet.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 To save money
March, the emptiest month
Just 40,239 overnight guests in 2025, the lowest of the year, and only 6,664 in the whole Prizren region. You get the towns to yourself, with cold nights.

Drelaj lake looks its best in spring
Peja's tourism website, a secondary source, says this lake at around 1,800 m is fed by rain and snowmelt and is at its best in spring.

03 My tip
Check the moveable holidays late
Fitër Bajram and both Easters move every year, and the government sets them by separate decision. Check the calendar before you book anything.

04 My tip
From April, mind the fire risk
gov.uk warns of wildfires from April to October, especially in dry spells. No campfires and no cigarette ends on the hillside.

What I would book
- Places to stayBooking.com Hotels in Prizren out of season In March and April the Prizren region sees very few visitors, and the old town is all the better for it.
- Tours and ticketsGetYourGuide Guided walks in Rugova There can still be snow up high in spring; a guide knows how far you can sensibly go.
Spring is the season fewest people look up for Kosovo, and for me that is exactly what makes it interesting. I will walk you through it with the two official series I have, Pristina’s weather and the guest count for each month, because other people’s impressions are no use when you are picking dates.
Three very different months
March, April and May are nothing alike. In March 2024 Pristina swung from a low of -3.7°C to a high of 25°C, the sort of range that has you dressing in layers. April climbed to 28.4°C, and May, oddly, topped out at 25.8°C but with lows safely above freezing. What does not change is the rain. Averaged over 2003 to 2024, all three months sit between 12.8 and 13.5 days of rain or snow. Spring here is green because it is wet. Month-by-month figures for the whole year are in weather in Kosovo.
The west tends to be wetter
The statistics agency also publishes annual rainfall for the two big plains. In seven of the nine years it gives between 2015 and 2024, the Dukagjini plain in the west got more rain than the Kosovo plain around Pristina. In 2024 it was 679.4 mm against 615.1. Not a huge gap, but if you are walking in the western mountains in spring, I would keep the waterproof on top of the rucksack, much as you would in the Lakes.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Prizren before prices climb.
Very few visitors, especially in March
March 2025 had the fewest overnight guests of the whole year, 40,239, and the Prizren region barely 6,664. April rose to 54,812 and May to 61,931, still well short of August’s 92,545. If you like having streets and monasteries almost to yourself, this is your season. For how it stacks up against other months, see best time to visit Kosovo.
Water in the mountain lakes
The unsigned local site pejatourism.org, which I only use as a secondary source, explains that Drelaj lake, at about 1,800 metres, is fed by rain and snow and is at its best in spring. That makes sense, as it is when most water reaches it. At that height there can still be snow, though, so I would go up in late May and with someone who knows the path.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Prizren before prices climb.
Holidays that fall in spring
The official calendar has three fixed dates in these months, Constitution Day on 9 April, Workers’ Day on 1 May and Europe Day on 9 May. Then there are the moveable ones, the first day of Fitër Bajram and Orthodox and Catholic Easter, which shift every year and are set by a separate government decision. In 2025, when one fell on a Sunday, the day off moved to the Monday. The 2027 dates are not out yet, so I am not giving any. Details in Kosovo public holidays.
From April, the hills need care
April opens the wildfire season that gov.uk flags, and it runs to October whenever it is dry. It would not make me move my dates, though it does change how I behave in the countryside. If you are planning to walk, hiking in Kosovo has the routes and what to know before you set off.
