St George's Orthodox Cathedral in Prizren, white with a columned porch under a red roof, beside a paved square

    • St George's Orthodox Cathedral stands on Prizren's Shatërvan square.
    • Kosovo's heritage database dates it to the 19th century.
    • It belongs to the bishop's complex in the old town's Special Zone.
    • No official visiting hours are published.

I see it as part of a Shatërvan stroll rather than a separate visit. It stands between the bridge and the Sinan Pasha Mosque, and simply pausing in front of it tells you Prizren has always been a town of several faiths.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 My tip

On the same square as the bridge

Its record places it at the Qafa e pazarit on the Shatërvan square, which also holds the 15th-century bridge and the Sinan Pasha Mosque.

      A bishop's complex with 14th-century churches

The bishop's residence complex protected by Law 03/L-039 groups the cathedral with two 14th-century churches the database places in the centre, St George Runović and St Nicholas Tutić.

    3. 03 My tip

Not to be confused with the Catholic cathedral

OpenStreetMap marks a Catholic cathedral, Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, a few steps away. St George's is the Orthodox one.

      Prizren

On Prizren’s Shatërvan square, by the bridge and a step from the Sinan Pasha Mosque, stands a pale stone church wrapped in a colonnaded porch. It’s St George’s Orthodox Cathedral, and while it’s younger than the medieval churches in the old town, to me it’s the building that best sums up Prizren’s mix at a glance.

    What the sources say

Kosovo’s official heritage inventory, the DTK, has it as «Kisha e Shën Gjergjit (Sinodale)», the church of St George, 19th century, at the Qafa e pazarit on the Shatërvan square, under provisional protection since 2014-2015. The 2008 protected-areas law, meanwhile, draws the bishop’s complex into the old town’s special perimeter, and the cathedral belongs to it along with two older churches.

Those two are St George Runović and St Nicholas Tutić, both 14th century according to the DTK. So the cathedral is the modern piece of a complex with medieval roots, and that’s the best way to look at it.

The records also hint at how tightly packed it all is. St Nicholas Tutić shares the Qafa e pazarit, the neck of the bazaar, with the cathedral, while St George Runović is listed in the town centre. The same sentence of the law adds the Orthodox seminary of Saints Cyril and Methodius to the perimeter, so the Orthodox side of the old town isn’t a lone building but a small quarter with several parts. For a visitor from Britain, think of a cathedral close rather than a single church.

    Four centuries around one square

What I like most about this cathedral is its neighbourhood. On the Shatërvan, the official records put the Prizren stone bridge in the 15th century, two pieces in the 17th (Sinan Pasha and its fountain) and this church in the 19th. You don’t need a history book to see that Prizren has long been home to several communities. Just turn slowly on the spot in this square.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Prizren before prices climb.

    Not the Catholic cathedral

A practical tip. OpenStreetMap marks a second cathedral a few steps away, the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. If you arrange to meet someone «at the cathedral», check which one. St George’s is the Orthodox one on the Shatërvan.

    Visiting

No official source publishes visiting hours as of 10 October 2026. My advice is the same as for the other old town churches. Pass by at least twice at different times of day, go in only if it’s open, and if it is, cover shoulders and knees and keep your voice down. London’s travel advice doesn’t rule out attacks and mentions religious sites as a possible target, though it singles out neither this nor any other church.

If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in St George's Cathedral and choose by the reviews.

    What to pair it with

I’d combine it with Ljeviš, the UNESCO church, and the Church of the Holy Saviour on the fortress slope. Those three give you the Orthodox side of the old town in an afternoon, and the rest of Kosovo is in my guide to Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo.

Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Prizren before prices climb.
