The Sinan Pasha Mosque in Prizren at dusk, its dome and minaret lit up above the surrounding rooftops

The Sinan Pasha Mosque is the most recognisable building in Prizren. Kosovo's Ministry of Culture heritage database lists it as a 17th-century Ottoman monument in the town centre, in the area known as the Shatërvan, under provisional protection since 2014-2015. It stands a few steps from the stone bridge and the river.

    • The Sinan Pasha Mosque stands in the centre of Prizren, beside the river.
    • Kosovo's heritage database dates it to the 17th century.
    • It has been under provisional protection since 2014-2015.
    • It's a working mosque with no official opening hours.

I'd look at Sinan Pasha twice, once up close in the morning and again from the fortress in the evening. If you go in, avoid prayer times, cover shoulders and knees and take your time.

What I would keep in mind

    1. 01 Most beautiful

The mosque in every photo of Prizren

Its dome and minaret above the river are the town's most repeated image. From the fortress you see it slotted in among the rooftops of the old town.

      Pair it with the bridge

The official record places it in the Shatërvan area of the centre, a few steps from the 15th-century stone bridge. One short walk covers both.

One of fifteen listed mosques in town

Kosovo's heritage database lists fifteen mosques in Prizren town, from the 15th to the 19th century. Sinan Pasha is one of three from the 17th, with Haxhi Ramadan and Sejdi Bey.

      mosques in Kosovo

Look up any picture of Prizren and the odds are the Sinan Pasha Mosque is in it. Its dome and minaret above the river are the visual centre of the town, which is why it deserves more than a glance on the way to the bridge.

    What the official record says

Its DTK record, the official monuments register, defines «Xhamia e Sinan Pashës» as a 17th-century Ottoman building. It places it in the town centre, in the Shatërvan area, and has given it provisional protection since 2014-2015. That’s thin, but it’s what has a source, and I won’t add builders or exact dates the record doesn’t give.

The rest of the database supplies the context. Prizren town has fifteen listed mosques, from the Kërëk mosque of the 15th century to Emin Pasha’s of the 19th. Sinan Pasha is one of three from the 17th century, alongside Haxhi Ramadan and Sejdi Bey. It’s not the oldest, but it’s the most visible. I bring them all together in mosques in Kosovo.

    The Shatërvan around it

The record doesn’t give a street but an area, the Shatërvan, as that part of the centre is known. The same database puts three more pieces there. The stone bridge, from the 15th century. The Shatërvan fountain, 17th century, the same age as the mosque. And, at the edge of the square, the cathedral of the Orthodox community, dedicated to St George and built in the 19th century. Within a few steps, then, you have four centuries of Prizren, which is why I’d start any visit here.

How it fits into a walk

It’s a few steps from the Prizren stone bridge, and to me the two belong together. See them up close in the morning, then again in the late afternoon from Prizren Fortress, where the mosque sits whole among the rooftops.

    Going in respectfully

It’s a working mosque and there are no official visiting hours. My approach is simple. I avoid prayer times, take my shoes off where expected, wear clothes that cover shoulders and knees and, if there are women in the group, keep a scarf handy in case covering the hair is asked for. In a territory where 1,482,276 of the 1,585,566 people counted in 2024 said they were Muslim, per ASK, those small gestures are noticed.

Why it ranks high for me

In my Prizren ranking it comes third, behind the fortress and Our Lady of Ljeviš. Not for an interior I can’t give you official details on, but because it organises the centre. Once you know where Sinan Pasha sits relative to the river, the bridge and the hill, you stop getting lost in the old town. That alone makes it worth ten unhurried minutes. From here, the Prizren hammam, Gazi Mehmed Pasha’s from the 16th century, is in the neighbouring Saraçhana quarter.
